IMPROVEMENT IN FORE-PAR"? IRONS FOR SHOEMAKERS.

Specilicat ion forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,978, dated Feltruary 3, 1874; application filed July 17, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, REUBEN S. Bunnrrr, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fore-Part Irons for Shoemakers, of which improvement the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figures 1. and 2 represent side elevations of a fore-part iron provided with my improvements, and Fi 3 a vertical central section in the plane of the line 00 a.

The object of my invention is to improve the construction and operation of forepart irons, and to avoid the use of numerous tools in doing the work usually done by this class of devices; and to that end my invention consists of an adjustable gage, arranged upon a screw-pin extending from the end of the handle, in combination with a laterally-adjustable stock, provided with one or more lips, and arranged in the gage, and extending between it and the handle, substantially as hereinafter specified. It also consists of a removable and adjustable lip, attached to the stock in a manner substantially the same as hereinafter described.

In the drawing, A represents the handle of the tool. Bis a screw-pin extending from the end of the handle, and rigidly attached thereto. 0 is a gage upon the outer or screw threaded end of the pin 13. The gage is slotted from side to side, as represented in Fig. 3. The body of the stock is arranged in the slot of the gage, and is capable of being moved freely therein. The stock is also soconstructed as to extend between the handle and the gage, as shown; and the part thus extended may be slotted to receive the pin 1 and admit of a considerable lateral movement of the stock, as shown in Fig. 3. In order to prevent the lip F from being tilted from its position while the tool is being used, I notch the lower end of the said lip, as shown at c, and extend a pin, 0, from the stock into the said notch.

It will be perceived, from the foregoing de scription, that the gage is adjustable with ret erence to the handle, and that the lips E and F are adjustable laterally with reference to the gage, and according to the thickness of the sole of the boot or shoe, it being understood that the handle is turned for this purpose until it is drawn away from the stock. When the stock is adjusted, the handle is turned in the reverse direction until the stock is forced against the gage with sufficient firmness to be prevented from being moved laterally while the tool is being used.

It will also be observed that the lip 1 is removable, and may be readily made either flush with the face of the stock, or extended a greater or less distance from it.

The gage may be rabbeted to receive the stock, instead of being slotted for that purpose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is-

1. The adjustable gage arranged upon a screw-pin extending from the end of the han-' dle, in combination with a laterally-adjustable stock, provided with one or more creasing or marking lips, and arranged in the gage, and extending between it and the handle, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The removable andadjustable lip F, at tached to the laterally-adjustable stock, substantially as specified, in combination with the adjustable gage, arranged upon a screw-pin extendin from the end of the handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
