This invention is designed to assist musicians in correcting the lip pressure used with wind instruments. As is well understood if an artist uses excessive lip pressure for an extended time it results in serious injury to the artist,- The correction is accomfirst, by indicating the pressure on the mouth-piece in a manner that it may be observed by'the operator and V st um nt w h means which will make it inoperative upon a p e ter in ip. Pre
The invention is illustrated in the. accompanying drawings as follows:-
Fig. 1 shnws an elevation of the dial as operated by the device.
Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section through the device. is
Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 3-.-3 in Fig. 2. i
Fig. 4 a plan view of the mounting.
Fig. 5 a view of the dial of an'alternative construction.
Fig. 6 a central longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 7 a central longitudinal section of a variation. f
1 marks the mouth-piece, 2 the horn or instrument conduit, and 3 the body of a mounting which is inserted between the mouth-piece and the conduit, the body 3 being provided with a plug 4 rigidly secured to it having the inwardly projecting tapered end 5 adapted to be inserted into the wind conduit in the manner'of the mouth-piece. A plunger '6 is slidingly mounted in the body 3 and fits telescopically over a projection 5 'on the end of the plug 4 making a fit sufficiently close to confine the air but permitting a movement of the plunger. A spring 7 is arranged between the plunger and the plug 4, the spring resisting the movement of the plunger. A dial case 10 is carried by a tube 8 opening 9 in the body 3. The case 10 is provided with a dial 12 and a hand 13. The hand'13 is mounted on a drum or spool 14 and the drum or spool is mounted on a pin LIr-ranssunn-ooannormc DEVlCE roninn ins'rnumnn'rs.
extending into an fixed in the caselO. vA spring 16 wound around the spool and securedtothe case and tends to return the hand to zero. A cord .17 is wound on the drum carried over 'a pulley 18 extendedthrough the pipe 8 carried over a pulley 19 and secured -t0]a screw 20 mounted on the plunger 6. f
It will'readily be seen that as theplunger 6 is moved forward under pressure from the mouth-piece and against the. resistance of the spring 7 that the cord 17 will be drawn with it effecting a turning movement of the drum 14-, and with the drum the hand 13,.
The spring is so proportioned with relation .to the dial that the dial will indicate the lip v pressure which will; move the plunger against the spring a sufiicient distance to move the hand as indicated in the dial.
The plunger is provided with an'opening:
21 which is covered by a valve '22. This valve is slidingly mounted in a slot 23 in the bottom of the body 3 and held in position. by a clip 23 which extends up around the body a sufiicient distance to hold the valve ,yieldingl'y'in place. When the plunger reaches a .pre-determincd position forward inoperative the opening 21 passes over the end of the valve 22 and thus'permits an escape of air which renders'th'e instrument inoperative for proper tone production. By makin the valve 22 adjustable along the slot 23 the point at which the instrument is made inoperative may be adjusted to any lip pressure desired. I
'In the alternative construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 a body 24c is provided in which there is a plug 25. A plunger 26 moves between the body 2 and the plug 25 trapping where it is desired to make the instrument 7 i liquid in a space 27. The space 27 communicates by means of a passage 28 with a pressure gauge 29. It will readily be seen that asthe plunger is moved forward liquid is forced from the space 27, passage 28 to the pressure gauge and this will indicate the In the alternative construction shown in Fig. 7 the body 30 is provided with a plug 31. A plunger 32 is slidingly mounted in the body 30 and telescopes the plug 31.
A spring 33 resists the movement of the pressure to which the plunger isv subjected through lip pressure on the mouth-piece.
ing through a sleeve 39, the graduations indicating the lip pressure to which the mouthpiece is subjected.
What I claim as new is 1. In a lip pressure correcting device for Wind instruments' the combination of a spring resisted mouth-piece; and means oil"- set from the mouth-piece actuated by: lip pressure on the mouth-piece for indicating to the player of the instrument said lip pressure. 7
2. In a lip pressure correcting device for Wind instruments, the combination of a spring resisted mouth-piece; and means for indicating the lip pressure'on the mouthpiece comprising a dial and indicating hand. 3. In a lip pressure correcting -d'evice for Wind instruments the combination of a spring resisted mouth-piece; a Wind conduit; a movable connection between the mouth-piece and the conduit; means resisting the movement of said connection; and
devices" actuated by the movement of said connection for indicatingthe, lip pressure on the mouth-piece comprising a dial and an indicating hand; a drum onwhich the hand is mounted; and a cord on the drum, said cord being actuated by a movementjof the connection. ii
' 4. In a lip pressure correcting device for Wind i11struments,'the combination of a mouth-piece; a plunger in which the mouthpiece is mounted; a body in which the plunger is mounted; a connectionlon the body for the Wind conduit; a spring resisting the movement 01 the plunger; and an indicator comprising a dial, a hand operaton the dial, a drum carrying the hand,
and a flexible connection from the drum to the plunger actuating the hand Witha movement 01 the plunger.
5. In ailip pressure correcting device for wind instruments, the' combination of a spring resisted mouth-piece; means off-set from the mouth"- DlGCE'fOI' indicatin to the, b
player of r the instrument t'he pressure onthe mouth-piece; and means rendering-the in- V 7 registering 'With-the openingfa valve plate in'the slot; means for holding the valve plate adjustably in the slot; and a, pressure indicating device actuatedv by the 1 movement of theplunger. In testimony, xvhereof l have hereunto 'set myhand.
