application; filedIDfecember 30,: Serial No. $48,355, it
" of uncoupling device shown in the patent to James R. Carmer, 79,9,4 I6,dated Sept 12th,
1-915, and. like the. Carmer device my im-' proved release rigging may be operated by means of the handor foot when a trainman is standing on the cornerv step of the plat form without liability of being caught hetween the end sills of the car when taking slack, and, furthermore enabling the trainmanv to use his signaling-lantern, or hand during the operation of uncoupling and mmediately after the uncoupling operation.
, My improved rigging may be operated by hand the center or at theend ofthe car end sill-:whenoccasion requires.
A further object in my invention is to increase the lifting power of this type ofrelease rigging which increase of power is desirable in connection with the new standard type of coupler now in general use. accomplish these objects without interfering with the service movements of the coupler;
and with these and other objects in view my invention consists of parts and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I v
In the drawings':' I I Fig; 1. is a topplan view of a portion of the end structure of a car, with my improved rigging mounted thereon.
Fig. 2. is a front elevation of a portion of the end structure of a car with my improved rigging mounted thereon. i
Fig. 3. is a side elevation of the double fulcrum bracket.
Fig. 4. is a front elevation of Figure 3.
Fig. 5. is a detail perspective view of the end of the pin lifting lever.
The reference numeral 1 designates a portion of the end structure of a car, 2 a coupler and 3 a coupler look pin which are of standard construction.
The bracket for my improved, rigging consists of a base plate 4 which is suitably secured to the end structure of the carand 15 provided with the fulcrum members 5, 6,
the said U-shaped protuberance. vers are secured on'their fulcrums by means p'ositi'one d in different horizontal planes, the
fulcrum member '5, being longer than the are provided witlrre'duced'screw' threaded fulcrum member 6." The fulcrum members I I has: its" outer portion permanently sagged downwardly so that the foot 'or hand portion 10 is normally positioned below the plane of the under face. of the car end structure, whereby danger of the foot or hand of" the operator being caught between the e'ndsillsofthe adjacent I & i limin d- T in r nd b ith sh fting lever 9,1is enlarged and provided with an opening through such enlargement through which the fulcrumfd projects. The d ameter of the opening inthje inner end of i the shifting lever 9' is gre'ater t'han thedi- 'aineter of the fulcrum 6' whereby the lever 9 is loosely mounted on the fulcrum 6 so that the lever will not become jammed onf its fulcrum due to any service movementsfltfhat may be required of the lever; V For instance thelever may slide backwardf fa'nd forwardv on the fulcrum to accommodate the draft and butting actionof the coupler;
The pin lifting lever is provided at inner end with a reduced'portion 11' adapted v to loosely slide withint'he eye of the; lock pin 3,,sa'1dreduced portion terminating in a 'ook 12 to prevent accidentaldisengagement fulcrum fi projecting. through said opening.
is greater than the diameter of the fulcrum 5, for .the'purpose described. Beyond the eye in the lever 13 said lever is deflected downwardly as at 14 said'downwardly por- 'of the liftingl'eVer 13. from the lock pin S "The pinllift-ing. lever I3 is provided intermediate its ends with the enlargement "through which an opening is formed, the
The diameterof are opening in the lever 13 tion terminating in a substantially U-shaped f protuberanceextending to one-side of the lever 13, 'and po'sitioned, when operatively mounted on; its fulcrum, under the shifting lever 9, said shifting lever 9 being supported loo against accidental downward movement by f The lelock pin 3.'of the coupler and moveswith the coupler in draft and buffing movements therefore'tlie lever must be loosely mounted on its fulcrum 5, as above described to permitof such movement-and at the same time prevent the lever being jammed on its fulcrum.
To operate the lock pin 3 the outer end of the shifting lever 9 is moved downwardly in a vertical plane by the hand or foot of the operator and as the lever 9 isseated in the U-shapedprotuberance of the lever l3 such downward movement of the shifting lever moves the pinlifting lever 13 on its pivot this causes the inner end thereof to be elevated thereby lifting lock pin 3 and positioning said pin and its coupler in lock set position. Changes may be: made in the V details 'of construction ithout departing from the scope of the appended claims.
l Vhat I. claim :is: V v
1. In a release rigging for car couplers comprising a plurality of fulcrums adapted to beconnectedto a car end structure, a pm I lifting-lever of the first order loosely mount- .edintermediate its ends on one of saidfulcrum's, and adapted to be loosely connected v at itsinner end to the lock pin of a coupler,
