. T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, sm ar M. Enwanns, a citizen of the United States, IQSICllIIg at I Detroit, rcounty Wayne, and State. of
'Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Tool for Removing and Replacing Valve Guides, rof which the followmgis a specification, referencebeing Internal combustion engines are provided with a series of valves known as intake and exhaust valves, the purpose of which is to alternately open and close the passageways between the gas intake and the cylinderand the exhaust passageway and the cylinder respectively. These valves are provided with guides or bearings within which they are adapted to move. I I
It is oftentimes desirable to remove these valve guides or bearingsand the removal of the same is a somewhat diflicult and tedious operation owing to the fact that it is necessary to remove the cylinder block from'its setting inorder to take out the valve guide or bearing. It is also very difliculttoremove these guides or bearings without cracking orotherwise damaging the cylinder block.
It is the prime object of my invention to provide a device adapted to remove the valve guides or bearings withoutthe neces sity of removing the cylinder from its setting and without the danger of otherwise damaging the cylinder block.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a device adapted to be used in replacing the valve guide or bearing in its normal position. 7
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a device of cheap and sim le construction and one which may be easlly operated by a novice so that the work may be done by the ordinary individual in his own garage without the necessity of taking his automobile to a repair shop.
My invention consists in the arrangement, combination and construction of the various parts of my improved device as described in the specification, claimed in my claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
F ig. 1 is a sectional view ofa cylinder block of an internal combustion engine with certain parts broken away and showing my improved device in place. i
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and 111 had therein to the accompanying drawings.
' Fig. 3 is av sectional view taken on .';-line v f HI have i shown a conventional. cylinder block 1, with the main portion thereof out away but. showing the location ofthe valves 2,;the valve seats 3-and the valve guidesgl 7 thereon, f the construction of my-fimproved device, I provide a tubular member 5. with a rod 6 extending therethrough and having on one end thereof a head 7. The head 7 has a knurled'face 15, as shown in Fig. 3. iThe opposite end of the rod 6 'is screw threaded as at 8 and the nut 9 is adapted to be screwed thereon against the washer 10.which latter member bears against the face 11 of the tubular member 5.
In the practical operation ofmyfimproved device as a, valve guide puller or remover, the valve 2 is removed in the ordinary way from the cylinder block 1- and the lower'end 12' of the tubular member 5 is placed against the cylinder block 1 directly under and around the head 13 of the valve guide 'or-fio, bearing 4. The rod 6 is inserted through the pocket 14 in the top of the cylinderblock and the aperture 17 inthe end of the tubularmember 5 until the knurled side 15 of the head? rests against the end of the valve guide 4;. The washer 10, and the nut 9. are then placed over the opposite end of the rod 6 and the nut 9 is screwed inwardly, thus causing a downward pressure upon the valve guide 1 by. the head and forcing the valve 0 guide 4; downwardly and out of the cylinder block 1. The knurled portion 15 of the head 7 on the rod 6 prevents the rod 6 from turning when the nut 9v is screwed inwardly.
When it is desired to use my improved 95 Y device in replacing the valve guide 4 in the cylinder head 1, the tubular member 5 is placed in the pocket 14:, therod 6 is inserted through the valve guide 4 and, the passageway 16 and the pocket 14, until it emerges 1 through the opening '17 in the top of the tubular member 5.
The washer 10 and the nut 9 are then placed on the end thereof and screwed inwardly as when the valve guide was being removed with the result that the valve will be pulled upwardly through the passageway 16 into its normal position.
For the purpose of holding. my device in operating position while the valve guide 1s being removed or replaced, I provide a I handle 18 which may begrasped with one hand by the operator and the device thus steadied While in use.
Owing to the construction of cylinder blocks on certaintypes of automobiles, it is sometimes necessary that the tubular member 5 be cut aivay as at and the portion 19 removed in order for it to be used. The sloping'side of the tubular member 5 which is left by the cutting away of the portion 19 as at 20, may bear against the side of the cylinder block and thus provide a bearing surface for the device in addition to the bottom thereof.
It is obvious that some changes may be made in the arrangement and construction of the variousparts of my improved device Without departing from the spirit of my invention and it is my intention to cover by myclaim such changes as maybe reasonably included within the scope thereof.
What I claim is:
A device of the class described comprising a member adapted to bear against an engine cylinder block and to be positioned adjacent a valve uide in said block, a rod extending "througl said valve guide and said first mentioned member and havinga said nut on, said rodwill cause the dis placement of said valve guide, and a handle on-said first member whereby the same may be held in a desired position. i V
