WILLIAM J. EBAY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO scmarnr LITHU- GRAPH' COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
FRUIT-BOX BLANK.
Application filed June 8,
A berries, fruit and the like, and its object is to produce a boxwhich can easily be set up and which will be self-locking when set up so that neither glue nor staples are required to hold the box together.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that in order to produce a satisfac tory berry or fruit carton, it is necessary.
to heavily parafiine the fiber-board or chipboard from which the box is made. This makes gluing unsatisfactoryand it is also necessary to somewhat stiffen the edges of the box so that in the present invention each of the box edges is doubled.
Another object of the invention is to produce a berry tray which can be quickly set up without the use of skilled labor, the creases and cuts being so formed as to enable the box to be very readily folded up for use.
Other objects of theinvent-ion will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
.Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete tray.
Fig. 2 is a tray and a portion of another side, and
TFig. 3 is a plan View of the blank from which the tray is cut.
The numeral 1 indicatesthe bottom of the box, which in the present example is square.
elusive connected therewith, which This bottom has four'side panels;2'to 5 inare creased at the edges ofthe bottom 1. Each of the side panels has an end tab as i'ndi-' cated at 6 to 9-inclusive, said end tabs being I sectional view of one side of the tion and the outer side panels have small I looking tabs cut therein which register with holes in the inside flaps 10 to 13 inclusive when the box is set up. When the box is the inner holes, and the fruit when placed in the box prevents them from coming out, andthey hold the box in place. The box is set up by raising the several panels along the folding lines at the edges of the box, and the end tabs 6 to 9 inclusive are placed inside the side panels and then the flaps 10 to 13 inclusive are bent over the inside the box and inside the adjacent end panels after which the small tabs 14: to 17 are pushed through the inside flaps and lock the box in a set-up position. These folding operations may be very rapidly accomplished, and when the box is once set up, it is very firm and'not easily collapsed, because its side walls are doubled. 1
\lVhat I claim is as follows, but various 'mOdIfiCatIOIIS may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described form, within the purview of my invention:
A berry or fruit carton comprising a rectangular base having a side panel at each edge thereof, an end tab carried by each side panel'and shorter than it, an auxiliary flap set up these locking tabs are pushed through
