FLEXIBLE'AND I NSU'LATING;SUPPORTING, AND REENE6RCING FINGS FOR CROWN I BLADES TURBINES. i
f application filed September 18, 1921. Serial No. 501,859.
To all whom it mag V concern: Be it known that I, ALFRED Boron, a subject of the Republic of France, residing at Paterson, in the State of New Jersey, United States of America,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible and Insulating, Supporting, and Beenforcing Rings for Cfrown"Blades or Turbines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in flexibleand insulating, supporting and reen'torcing rings for crown plates-for turbines.
V The primary object of the invention is the provision of meansior'attaching the. blades of a. turbine to the rotors.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for removably attaching the blades. of a turbine to the rotors so that they maybe readilyQremoved for re placement purposes or to'r repairing.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for attaching the blades to the rotors of a turbine, in such manner that they will be properly held in the desired position and at the desired angle and so arranged as to reduce leakage to a minimum degree and also insulate the same against heat; c I
'A still further object of the invention is the provision of a turbine construction such as above referred to which will be comparatively-simple and inexpensive to manu'fao ture, reliable and efficient in use and readily operated. Q
With the aboveandotherobjects in view, the present inventionresides in the. novel features of construction, formations and combinations andarrangements ofparts to be hereinafter more fully described-claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings 'formin'ga partof the present application, and inwhich: 'j f l *igure 1 isa face view of a portion of one of the rotors, some of the blades being removed and others shown in section;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line A-A of Figure 1 and through the parts D'D of Figure 5;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line B-B of Figure 1 Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line CC of Figure 5; V
Figure 5 is an edge view of one of the steel supporting members;
Figure 6 is a sectional view thereof; 50
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view taken through the blades, looking in the direction oi one of the rotors;
Figure 8is a sectional view of an alternative construction used in small sized turbines;
Figure 9 is perspective view of a portion of a blade; and,
Figure 10 is a perspective view of a portion of the spacing ring.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates in general a portion of a turbine which includes the spaced rotors 11 and 12 which may be attached in the usual manner to a shaft (not shown).
The adjacent faces of the rotors l1 and 12 are provided with projecting rings 1d between which are formed the grooves of 8 channels 13 provided at intervals with shoulders 14'. 1
The rotors are preferably formed from steel or other suitable material, while the grooves 13 thereof are adapted to receive the supporting members 15; These members 15 include a pair of side flanges 16 and 17, the former oi": which areprovided with shoulders 18 interiorly tapered as shown in Figure '6. These shoulders are adapted to 99 cooperate with the oppositely tapered shoulders 1 2 above referred to for locking these members 15 in position. The flanges v16 and 17 are connectedby circular ,plates 19 from which extend flexible flanges 20 provided with enlarged'inner sides 21 having grooves 22 formed therein for receiving the spacing rings 29 which are provided with spaced lugs29 curved to conform to the curvature ofthe rotor blades 24 and between which the blades are inserted. The sides 25 of the grooves 22 are bent inwardly by means of a suitable machine for clampingthe dovetailed ends 23 of the rotor blades and the 1 correspondingly spaced lugs 29' and holding them in the desired position. Suitable packlng beads are shown at 26 and are formed onthe plates 19 and are ad-apted' to fit within the grooves 27 of the supplemental supporting members 28 for the purpose of efiiciently-sealing the turbine against leakage.
It will be noted that the supportingniem- ' bers 15 and 28 are arranged alternately for cooperation 'with each other, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. In
applying the blades, the supporting members 15 are inserted in the grooves 13 be- 7 tween the shoulders 14, and are given a of turbines, it should be noted that the refer-' ence numerals indicate the sameparts as in Figure 2, but numeral 30 has been substituted for numeral 14. In this construction rings 30 are formed on the interior faces of the'rotor,
In the mounting, the supporting members 15 are inserted between the rings 30 and 7 said rings 30 are-closed over said supporting fee members 15 forming a dovetail, thus holding the supporting members 15 rigidly in place.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a rotor blade support for turbines is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in this connection that various. minor changes in the specific details of constructioncan be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spir t or sacrificing any of the advan tagesof the invention,
Having thus fully described the invention,
, what I e aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
