RING-FORMIN G MACHINE.
Application filed August 23, 1922. Serial No. 583,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'SAMUEL PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ra- Venna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Ring- Forming Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines especially designed for forming beads or rings on toy balloons or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel means to facilitate the handling of the supports employed for supporting the forms, used in the forming of the balloons.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for automatically feedin the form supports from a tray, through the roll forming mechanism, and to automatically return the supports to a filling tray, where the supports may be removed.
With the foregoing and other ob ects in 2 view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, With out departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a support handling machine constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the machine, parts thereof being broken away.
Figure 4 is a diagrammatical view of the operating means.
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the machine.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in det-til, the machine embodies a support 5, which may be in the form of a table having legs 6. Secured to the upper surface of the support or table are the flange guide members 7 which provide a guideway for the plunger 8 and form supports 9, the form support being of the usual and well known construc tion.
Supported by the table is a container or magazine 10, which is formed with inwardly extending flanges 11 providing guideways for the supports 9, the ends of the supports being shown as disposed under the flanges 11 to insure the supports being moved forwardly in perfect alignment with the side walls of the magazine 10.
Spaced longitudinal bars 12 are disposed adjacent to the magazine 10, the space between the bars 12 and magazine being sufficient to-accommodate the follower 13 which is in the form of a bar, the ends of which extend beyond the side walls of the magazine as clearly shown by'Figure 1 of the drawings. The support 5 is formed with suitable openings to accommodate the flexible members 14 which are shown as having one of their respective ends secured to the follower 13, the opposite ends thereof being anchored to the under surface of the support 5 as at 15, the intermediate portions of the flexible members operating over the pulleys 16. /Veights 17 are mounted on the flexible members 14 and exert a force on the follower 13 to normally urge the same towards the delivery end of the tray or magazine 10, to move the supports 9 into the path of travel of the plunger 8.
A supporting bar 17 has connection with the legs 6 of the table, which supporting bar provides a support for the motor 18,
pulley 19 and pulley 20. A suitable belt 21 necting bar which has one end thereof eccentrically connected to one of the spokes 20, as at 24. the opposite end 'of the connecting bar 23 having connection with the plunger 8, as at 25. Carried by the bar 23 is a yoke 26 which provides a guidcway for the bar 27 which is shown as movable through the yoke, the bar 27 being however formed with a notched portion 28 adapted to move to a position in engagement with the pin 29, whereby the bars 23 and 27 are connected, so that movement of the bar 23 produces a relatively movement of the bar 27. Supported at one end of the table is an inclined wall 30 which lies in the path of travel of one end of the bar 27, and acts as a stop to hold the bar 27 against movement while the bar continues downwardly. thus disengaging the wall of the notched portion 28, and pin 29. One end of the bar 27 connects with the movable member 31 which has connection with the bell crank lever 32 as through the link 33, the bell crank lever being however pivotally supported by the table 5 at a point directly under the follower 34. This bell crank lever 32 has connection with the follower 34 through the medium of the link 35 so that movement of the member 31 in one direction will operate to move the follower 34 at right angles with respect thereto.
A flexible member 36 has connection with one end of the bell crank lever 32 the opposite end of the flexible member being anchored to the supporting legs of the table 5, the intermediate portion of the flexible member passing over the pulley 37, while the loop portion of the flexible member 36, between the pulley 37 and anchorage point 38, supports the weight 39. From the foregoing it will be seen that as the pulley 20 is rotated, and the bar 23 moves to a position wherein the pin 29 contacts with the shoulder formed by the cut out portion 28 of the bar 27, the bar 23 picks up the bar 27 and moves the same towards the right hand side of the table, with the result that the follower 34 is moved to move the support 9 which is engaged thereby, into the magazine 40 that is positioned at one end of the table and which is being filled. Upon further movement of the bar 27, the bar engages the inclined member 30, and as the bar 23 continues downwardly, the bar 27 is released from the pin, whereupon the weight 39 moves the bar 27 to its normal position as shown by Figure 2 of the drawings. With this return movement of the bar 27, the follower 34 is moved to its normal or inactive position, and at the same time the bar 23 moves to operate the plum er 8 and force another support into posit1on directly in front of the receiving end of the magazine 40 to be forced into the magazine.
Positioned between the guide members 7 is a vertically adjustable bottom 41, which is engaged by the threaded rod 42 controlled by the handle 43, whereby the supports 9 may be adjusted to move at an angle with respect to the brushes 44 and 45 to be hereinafter more fully described.
These brushes 44 and 45 have their ends mounted on the bearings 46 and 47 respectively, which bearings may be adjusted to move the brushes of each pair towards or away from each other to better accomplish their purposes.
Shafts 48 receive motion from the pulley 19 as through the twisted belt 49, which is shown as extending upwardly and passing over the pulleys 50, which pulleys transmit motion to the shafts 51 and 52 respectively of the brushes 44 and 45. It might be further stated that the guide members 7 extend from the right hand end of the table to a point ad'acent to the receiving magazine 40 so that t e supports 9 which are filled with the balloon forms, are moved longtudinall of the table, in a direct path between t e brushes 44 and 45, where the brushes contact with the extreme lower edges of the balloons on the forms positioned in the support, and due to the rotation of the brushes, it will be seen that portions of the rubber forming the balloons are picked up and rolled to provide rings or beads.
Thus it will be seen that the form supports may be positioned on the table in the frames or magazines and automatically fed therefrom through the brushes of the machine, where the same are again picked up and automatically delivered to a receiving frame or magazine placed at the opposite end of the table.
It might be further stated that the magazine support has a threaded shank 53 pivotally connected as at 54, there being provided a handle 55 at one end thereof for operating the threaded shank to adjust the guideway vertically to cause the guideway to operate at an angle to correspond with the position of the magazines at the end thereof.
A hinge 56 provides meansmfor connecting the guideway to the frame of the machine as clearly shown by Figure 5 of the drawm s.
The follower 13 is formed with an opening 58, to accommodate the spring arm 57 mounted on the follower support, so that when the follower is moved to the limit of its rearward movement, the follower will be held into such position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, a table, guideways formed longitudinally of the table, pairs of brushes rotating adjacent to the guideways, a magazine for containing form supports, positioned at one end of the table, means associated with the magazine for feeding the supports to the guideways, means operating in the guideway for moving the supports between the brushes, and means for feeding the supports into a receiving magazine.
2. In a device of the character described,
a table, a guideway mounted on the table, pairs of brushes supported on the table over the guideway, means for adjusting the brushes of each pair with respect to each other, a form supporting magazine adapted to feed form supports into the guideway, and means at one end of the guideway for receiving the form supports.
3. In a device of the character described,
a table, a guideway on the table, brushes supported by the table and adapted to contact with forms. passing through the guideway, a plunger operating at one end of the guideway, a form support containing magazine positioned adjacent to the guideway for feeding form supports into the guideway and into the path of travel of'the plunger, means for operating the plunger to move'the form supports along the guideway, and a magazine at the opposite end of the table for receiving the form support.
4. In a device of the character described, a table, a guideway on the table, brushes operating adjacent to the guideway, a form support containing magazine disposed at one end of the guideway, a follower contacting with the forms of one of the supports, means for urging the follower forwardly to move the form supports into the guideway, a plunger for moving the form supports through the guideway, and a magazine for receiving the form supports at the opposite end of the table.

In a device of the character described, a table, a guideway on the table, a plunger operating at one end of the guideway, brush members supported adjacent to the guideway, a magazine for containing form supports, means for moving the form supports from the magazine and into the path of travel of the plunger, a follower at the opposite end of the guideway, said form sup ports adapted to move in the path of travel of the follower, means for simultaneously moving the follower with one movement of the plunger to force a form supportfrom the guideway, and means for receiving the form supports from the guideway 6. In a device of the character described, a table, a, guideway on the table, a magazine for containing the form supports disa plunger operating at one end of the guideway, a magazine for containing form supports positioned at one end of the guideway, means for moving the form supports into the guideway, a power pulley supported under the table, a connecting bar connecting the power pulley and plunger, a pin carried by the connecting bar, a movable member at the opposite end of the table, a bar having a notched portion, and having connection with the movable member, means for moving the connecting bar to bring the pins thereof into engagement with the walls of the notched portion to move the second mentioned bar in one direction, a follower at the opposite end of the table, a magazine at one end of the guideway, and said follower adapted to move the form supports from the guideway into the last mentioned magazine.-
