Be it known t at I, HARRY TAYLOR LooMis, a citizen of the United States, re sidin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabmachines of the character referred to adapted to make an ornamental product from wide strips of material.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a practical machine for feedin strips of backing material, as liannel, an facing material, as silk, shirrin the facing material and automatically attaciing the two trips together along a predetermined line or Ines. 1
Another object is the provision of a simple machine for automaticall supplying a reinforcin strip and associating it with the attached acking strip and facing strip along the predetermined line above mentioned.
Another object of the invention is the prof vision of an eicient machine for automatically supplying a finishing strip and attaching the same 1n folded condition to the attached backing stri and facing strip.
Another obJect o the invention isthe provision of a ractical machine capable of producing a p urality of similar products from single widths of the backing material and the facing' material.
Other objects will be in art obvious and in part pointed out hereina ter.`
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exem lified Lin the construction hereinafter described and the scope of the application of whichy will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, attention is directedvto Fig. 13 wherein is diagrammatically illustrated the finished product. In this View the numeral 1 indicates a backing strip which may be of flannel. The numeral2 indicates the facing strip which may of silk or other ornamental fabric. The numeral 3 indicates the reinforcing strip-gauzen tape-lying between the backing strip and "the facing strip at one edge of the .completed roduct. The numeral 4 indicates the iinishingstrip, which may be made of silk foldedasindicated and attached `to the other strips by a line of stitching, indicated at 5. In Fig. 13 the several strips are separated for the purpose of clearer disclosure. It is to be understood that the reinforcing strip 3 is utilized to effect the attachment of the strips 1 and 2 to each other, and serves also to stiffen and reinforce the edge of the product. It
will also be seen that the fold of the finishing strip 4 is looped and preferably not creased at 6. Thereby it has the appearance of softness. The machine of the present invention is designed to produce the product generally illustrated in Fig. 13, and parts of such products, from continuous supplies of material and in an automatic manner, it being merely required to thread the machine with the materials and set it in motion.
Referring now to the general construction of the machine, reference is made more particularly to Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4 wherein the numera 7 indicates a table supported by legs 8, the whole forming the frame of the machine, the fore part 9 of the frame being disposed below the rear part 7. The numeral 10 indicates a platform to which the completed fabric may be delivered. 4The numeral 11 (Fig. 2) indicates an electric motor from which the machine derives its motion through the instrumentality of the chain 12 driving a worm shaft 13 journaled in a suitable upstanding bearing block 13. The numeral 14 indicates a worm wheel journaled in the bearing block and deriving its motion from the worm 13. Fixed so as to rotate with the worm wheel 14 is a beveled gear 15 cooperating with a companion beveled gear 16 on a counter shaft 17 supported in bearings 18 on the frame and carrying a sleeve or shaft 19 splined to the counter shaft 17 so as to be longitudinally adjustable thereon, but forced to rotate therewith, the sleeve 19 carrying a friction gear 20 cooperative with a companion frietion gear 21 mounted on a transverse shaft 22 supported in standard bearings 22 on the frame, the shaft 22 driving a chain 23 which transmits motion to a spur gear 24 on a stud on the inner portion of the block 13', this gear in turn" meshing with a pinion 25 on an outer hollow shaft 25' rotatively supported on an inner hollow concentric shaft 26 extending transversely across the machine. By adjusting the radial position of the friction gear 20 relative to the com panion friction gear 21, the speed of rotation of the shaft 22 may be varied as desired and the shaft 25" driven at greater or less speed as may be required. The shaft26 is journaled in bearing pieces 27 at opposite sides of the frame (Fig. 4) vertically adinstable in slots 28 in the blocks 13', springs 29 being employed tending t0 lift the bearmglpieces 27. A cam or wiper 30 on a handle 31, journaled in the bearing pieces 27 cooperates with an adjusting screw 32 to force the bearing plate 27 to a lower position, and consequently to regulate -the up and down position of the4 shaft 26. Any suitable device may be employed for adjusting the position of the friction gear 20 radially of the friction gear 21 and proper devices are provided to lock the parts in adusted relation. Beneath the table 7 is a ousi'ng 33 within which may be disposed a supply of facing material 34 in loosely folded condition so that it may be readily withdrawn therefrom with but little resistance.
The numeral 35 indicates a frame su ported roll or spool which supports t e supply rolls of backing material 36. The backing material passes through a tension device, indicated generally by the numeral V37, which keeps it more or less taut and smooth, and thence the backing strip 36 passes upwardly to the feedin and attaching devices, as illustrated in ig. 4. Over the table 7 passes the upper ply of an endless canvas feed belt 38 supported by a front feed roll 39 and a rear feed roll 40 suitably journaled in the bearing blocks 13. Arranged on the feed belt 38 in regular rows both longitudinally and transversely, and spaced apart thereon, are pointed ins 41 designed to penetrate the flannel strip 36 and positively feed the same to the left, referring to Figs. 1 and 4. The bevel gear 15 is on the end of the belt feed roll 39 and gives motion to this roll and to the pin belt just referred to. A suitable belt tightener 42 may be employed if desired. If
.desired friction surfaces, as sand paper,
may be substituted for the pins 41, or utilized therewith.
As has been stated, the hollow shaft 26 is supported in vertically adjustable bearing pieces 27, it being understood that there are two bearing pieces 27, one at each side of the machine, in order to give proper support and uniform rise and fall to the shaft 26 throughout its length. The feed roll 39 may have pointed teeth 39' to engage the belt 38, and positively feed the same.
The silk facing strip 34 from the housing 33 passes from the front end of the machine table over the shaft 22 and over several narrow canvas strip supporting belts 44 and over loose rollers 45 on a stationary transversely disposed bar 46 spaced in front of the shaft 26 and roll 39, the facing strip 34 passing between the 1rolls 26 and 39, whence it extends rearwardly to the upper surface of the table 7. The rollers 45 act to support and guide the facing strip without unnecessary friction, being held in longitudinal position on the bar 46 by pins 43.
At a suitable part ofthe shaft 26, in the present instance at its midlength, the diameter is enlarged to provide a pressing roll or surface 47 designed to cooperate with the surface of the roll 39 to press the strips acking of fabric entering between these two rolls portion of the roll 26 are disposed certain devices, operative on one or more of said strips at the side of the areas pressed by the pressing surfaces hereinbefore referred to, to advance such side portions so that the entire widths of the several strips are advanced substantially uniformly. In the present embodiment the side advancing devices include movable pins, or pin feeding devices, as tractive or friction fingers or pins 49 carried bythe rolls or outer shafts 25, and designed to contact the silk facings at the side of the pressed area. There are two sets of fingers 49, one set on the shaft or sleeve 25 yat one side of the pressing surface 47, and another similar set at the other side of said pressing portion. These fingers are preferably provided by metallic pins having rubber sleeves, the ends of the sleeves projecting from the ends of the pins so as to come in contact with the facing strip 34. Within the hollow shaft 26 adjacent the pressing area referred to, a heater is disposed. In the present embodiment the heater comprises a resistance coil 50 (Fig. 16) from which wires 52' extend to the end of the roll` and to a suitable main provided with a cut-out switch wherewith the current may be established or cut oil' as may be required, suitable provision being made for transmittingr the current while the parts rotate.
In front of the pressing pbrtion of the feed rolls 47 and 39 is disposed a means to advance a portion of the facing strip 34 in transversely folded condition for attachment to the other strip or strips by the pressing portions of the rolls. In the present embodiment, a shirrer blade 52 is provided, being a. thin metallic piece pivoted to a bifurcated arm 53 of a rock shaft 54 supported in the block 13 or other suitable part of the frame of the machine. The blade 52 is thrust downwardly by a coil spring 55 and its downward motion is limited by a lug 56 which cooperates with a portion of the arm 53. Rocking motion is communicated to the shaft 54 through the instrumentality of a link 57 pivoted to a crank 58 on the worm shaft 13, the lower end of the link 57 being pivotally connected t0 an arm 59 extendingr from the end of the rock shaft 54. In order to provide for variation in the throw of the folding or shirring blade 52, provision is made for adjusting the position of the pivotal connection between the arm 59 and the link 57, this being accomplished in the present embodiment by slotting the arm 59 and providing a pivot pin 60 movable in said slot and in a channel 6l in a cross piece 62 carried by the link 57. By adjusting the pin 60 in this channel and in the slot in the arm 59, greater or less amplitude of vibration may be given to the blade 52.
The numeral 64 indicates a spool or supply of reinforcing material which consists preferably of a narrow strip of cotton or men gauze provided with adhesive material. n the present embodiment the adhesive material is dry as the gauze feeds from the spool 64. The reinforcing strip passes across a metallic guide bar 65 and `under a metallic spring and contact piece 66, and thence through a tubular channel or standard 67 in a moistener or liquid-coating device 68 having a Well containing water and provided with a Wick 69, which presses against the reinforcing strip 64 and moistens the adhesive thereon. From the moistening device the reinforcing strip passes through a slotted guide bracket 70 and thence to position between the pressing surfaces 47 and, 39, passing also between the reinforcing strip and the facing strip. In the present embodiment, the reinforcing strip is of such width that when slit longitudinally, 'each section thereof will provide a reinforce for the same side of the completed product, as exemplified in Fig. 13. By reason of the fact that the heater hereinbefore referred to is disposed adjacent the pressing surfaces of the rolls 26 and 39, those portions of the strip which may have been moistened by contacting with the reinforcing strip will dried, and the pasted parts will be firmly attached together.
Inasmuch as so much of the apparatus hereinbefore described may be utilized in the production of a composite fabric suitable for general use without further finishing, the operation o so much of the machine may now be briey referred to. A supply of the backing strip is mounted on the roll 35; a supply of facing material is placed in loosely folded condition in the housing 33, and a supply of gauze tape is mounted on the spool 64, the gauze tape being threaded through the channel 67 of the moistener and through the guide 70, thence into positlon between the backing strip and the facing strip, the former of which is led through the tension device 37 to between the rolls 47 and 39 so as to be engaged by the pins 41 of the feed belt 38 and the latter, or facing strip, being led over the front of the frame, over the shaft 22, belts 44 and rolls 45 beneath the shirring blade 52 into position between the pressing rolls 47 and 39. Both the backing strip and the facing strip are wide as compared with the tape, and will liebetween the feed belts 38 with their sets of pins and the hollow shafts 25 with .their sets of friction fingers. Upon energizing the machine, as by a clutch shifter. to transmit motion from the motor to the Worm wheel 13, the three superposed strips will be fed and will be pressed together by the surfaces 47 and 39. The central portions of the backing strip and the facing strip will be becs directly pressed together and firmly` into contact with the asted and moistened reinforcing strip by t e ressing surfaces 47 and 39, so as to cause t paste to securely attach together certain areas of these strips alone a predetermined line. the construction of t e gauze permitting the paste to pass through the gauze and effect the attachment of both the backing and the facing strip thereto and to each other. The rib 48 in the pressing surface 47 serves to longitudinally crease the attached superposed strips along a line approximately central longitudinally of the gauze strip. and this crease facilitates the subsequent slitting or parting of the superposed strips along this line by a slitter, hereinafter referred to. The heat from the resistance coil will effect sufficient drying of the pasted joint to retain the strips securely attached together. It is to be noted, however, that, by the provision of the shirring blade 52 one of the strips, in the present instance the facing strip, 1s advanced in transverse folds, puckers or shirrsso that the pressing surfaces referred to bind the pressed portion of the facing strips to the other strips in a folded condition. Boththe backing strip and the facing strip being wide as compared with the reinforcing tape, it is desirable to advance those portions of these strips transversely at thc sides of the pressing arca uniformly with the central portion.
This is efi'ccted by the belt 38, assisted by thei pins 41 which operate to positively advance the side portions of the backing strip, while the friction fingers 49 perform a similar office for the facing strip. The facing strip being of ornamental material, it is desirable to avoid defacing it, and to this end the fin ers 49 are relativel soft. as being of rub er. The fiannel bac ing strip being less expensive and usually concealed, maybe penetrated by the pins 41 to more effectively assist the feed. Should the feeding of the lateral portions of the facing strip lag, increased rotary speed may be given to the fingers 49 by varying the radial position of the friction gear 20 relative to the gear 21. The pressure between the surfaces 47 and 39 may be regulated by` adjusting the screws 32, and the amplitude of reciprocation of the shirring blade 52 may be changed to alter the depth of fold, or shirring, of the facing strip. Whereas in the present embodiment the backing and facing strips are attached along a central line so as to provide a double width of the product which will be separated along said central line to provide the product in duplicate, it will be understood that the machine may be utilized to provide a single width of the product.
In order to give greater finish t6 the product and to divide the double width strips into two single width strips, certain instrumentalities are provided, which will now be explained. The numeral 71 indicates a slitter, or slittin disc, mounted in a carrier 72 overhanging the central line of the machine and adjustable by means of the screw 73. The slitter 71 cooperates with a platen roller T4 on the shaft 75 mounted in the frame of the machine, having a spur pinion 76 meshing with an idle pinion 77 driven from a spur gear 78 rotating with the roll 39. The slitter 71 is disposed to slit or part the three superposed strips along the central longitudinal line of the reinforcing strip. After being slit, the two sections of the fabric flow along the table under the influcnce of thc feed belts 38 to positions where the finishing strips are applied and attached` as by stitching, to the margins of each of the parted sections.
The numeral 80 indicate brackets supported by the frame and having bearings 81 for spools of finishing strip, as silk tape. The relation of these spools is clearly illustrated in Fig. l2. and it will be observed that from the spools, the tapes 82 pass around guide pins 83, through folders 84, into alignment with the edges of the parted sections of the product of the slitting operation, a stitching mechanism, as a sewing machine. generally illustrated at 85'. being employed to stitch the folded finishing strips to the respective edges of the sections referred to. One of the folders is indicated in Fig'. 14 and comprises a metallic piece 85, the fore end of which, at 86, receives the slit finishing strip in practically unfolded condition. the folder being shaped so that, as the finishing strip passes downwardly toward its rear under and toward the surface of the tape, the finishing strip will be folded and emerge from the folder in folded condition. as generally indicated in Fig. 13. The delivery end of the folder is arranged close to the stitching head of the sewing machine. and said sewing machine is provided with two needles or stitching mechanisms 86 and 87, one of which operates to sew the folded finishing strip to one edge of the parted product and the other to the other edge. It is preferred that the finishing strip be stitched to said edges along lines spaced from said edges. so that the outer edge of the attached finishing strip may be lifted. In this wise provision is made for passing tacks or other fastening devices through the reinforced edge of the composite article produced without passing through the finishing strip. On the contrary, the finishing strip will lie over and conceal such fastening devices.
Any suitable form of tension device for the backing may be employed. In the present embodiment the backing passes beneath a plate 90 extending transversely of the machine and is pressed against s aid plate by a jaw 91 held against the plate 90 by the fed beyond the guide bar 65 and springs 92. `The jaw 91 has a pivotal connection with the plate 90 by reason of lugs 93 of such shape as to enter slots 94 in brackets attached to the frame, said slots 94 having inner enlargements to receive the lugs 93, which latter, when the device is in operative condition, span the narrower slots 94 and are prevented from dro ping therefrom. By turning the jaws 91 ownwardly the lugs 93 will register with the slots 94, permitting removal of the jaw 91.

In an' apparatus of the character described, in combination, mechanism adapted to'feed a backing strip, a facingstrip -and a reinforcing strip into superposed relation, including resser rolls between which pass the `parts of the strips to be attached together, and movable pins alongside said presser rolls adapted to advance the parts of said strips at the side of said presser rolls.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, mechanism adapted to feed a backing strip, a facing strip and a reinforcing strip into superposed relation, including a device adapted to attach said strips together along a redetermined line, and means adapted to slit the attached strips within their area of attachment.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, mechanism adapted to feed a backing strip, a facing strip and a reinforcing strip into superposed relation, including a device adapted to attach said strips together along a predetermined line, means adapted to slit the attached strips within their area of attachment, a plurality of supplies of finishing strip, and means adapted to attach said finishing strips to the edges respectively produced by said slittin operation.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a pair of co-operative pressing devices between which strips pass for attachment together at the pressed areas, means adapted to advance a transversely folded portion of one of said strips for attachment to the other strips by said pressing devices, and devices, operative on one :or more of said stri s at the side of the areas t0 be so attache to advance such side portions so that the widths of the strips are advanced substantially uniformly, said pressing devices includin apair of cooperative resser rolls, sai fold advancing means inc uding a strip folding blade and said side advancing` devices including tra'ctive fingers adapted to cooperate with the strip to be folded at one side of said pressing devices.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, mechanism adapted to feed a backing strip and a facing strip into superposed relation, including resser rolls between which portions of sai strips pass, in feeding devices for advancing portions of said backing and facing strips at the side of said pressed portions, and a shirring device operative to shirr and facing strip in front of said presser rolls.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, mechanism adapted to feed a backing strip and a facing strip into superposed relation, including a device adapted to attach said strips together along a predetermined line, a finishing str ip supply, a folder for'said finishing strip, and means adapted to atta/ch said finishing strip in folded condition over the attached portions of said other strips.

In an apparatus of the character de scribed, in combination, mechanism adapted to feed a backing strip and a -facing strip into supe d relation, including a device adapted to attach said strips together along a predetermined line, means adapted to slit the attached strios within their area of at tachment, a. plurality of supplies of finislb ing strip, and means adapted to attach said finishing strips to the edges respectively produced by said slitting operations.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, mechanism adapted to feed a backing strip and a facing strip into superposed relation, includin a device adapted to attach said strips toge er along a predetermined line, means adapted to slit lthe attached strips within their area of attachment, a plurality of supplies of Iinishing strip, means adapted to fold said inishing strips, and means adapted to attach said finishing strips to the edges respectively produced by said slitting operation.
