Be it known that I, JOHN J. DALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton Center, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in Shoes, of which the following is a. specification.
In the shoemaking art, various developments and improvements have been made in shoe structures. The sole, as the important service element of the shoe, is under Y exacting requirements and exhaustive test. The primary requirement is durability or life and with this is coupled various desirable qualities, such as comfort, protection against moisture, appearance and many others.`
My present invention relates to a multiple-soled shoe having an outer sole and an intermediate sole of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material substantially coextensive with and similar in outline to said outer sole'and stitched to the upper by a line of stitching independent of the stitch'ng which secures the outer sole to the intermediate sole whereby the outer Sole, when worn through, may be readily disconnected from the intermediate sole and the latter exposed as a new, complete and unworn surface for direct contact with the ground. v
I have discovered that by using an intermediate sole of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material and stitching said sole to the upper independently of the stitching which secured the outer sole to the int-ermediate sole, the outer sole will be uniformly yieldably supported thereon throughout its extent so that the wea-r on said outer sole will be distributed over a large area instead of-being concentrated in a restricted zone of bearing, and hence the life of the outer sole will be considerably increased. Moreover the outer sole, when worn through,
may be conveniently severed from the shoe without disturbing the theretofore covered and protected line of stitching which se- -curely attaches the intermediate sole to the upper, 'and said intermediate sole exposed to the ground as a new, complete and unworn wear surface.
The advantages of my invention are 'threefold in that by it I am able to avail myself, (l) of the full normal life of the outer sole, plus (2) an added increment representing the increased wearability imparted to the outer sole by the uniform wear distributive effect 0f the resilient intermediate sole, and (3) the full normal life of the intermediate sole as a new, complete and unworn wear surface when exposed to the ground, all in a construction in which the individual soles are so attached to the upper that the outer sole, when worn through, may be disconnected from the intermediate sole with the minimum of inconvenience and the latter exposedto the ground as a full wear surface.
Tests of shoes made in accordance with my invention show an actual increase of from two to three months in the life of the outer sole, even where a very light outer sole is used, over a double-soled shoe in which the intermediate sole is not designed to have any cushioning and wear distributing effect upon the' outer sole.
For the purposes of this application, I shall show and discuss my invention in its adaptation to a welt shoe. It will be understood, however, that such treatment is purely illustrative and in no way limiting. The construction of my shoe is described and illustrated in 'the accompanying specification and drawings and the characteristic features of novelty are particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Figs. 5 and 6 4are fragmentary detail views showing a modification. I have indicated at A the upper and at IV the welt of a double soled welt shoe in accoi-dance with my invention.
Stitched to the welt W at S2 is an intermediate sole X of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material. The sole X oonforms in outline to and is substantially coextensive with the outer sole Y which is stitched at S to the intermediate sole X and welt W by a line of stitching independent of the stitching S2 which secures the intermediate sole X to said welt. (See Fig. 4.)
In Figs. l and 2 the outer sole Y is shown as terminating at the breast B of the heel H. In Figs. 5 and 6 said sole is skived and extended as a point or tip Y2, preferably triangular in form, which is inset centrally of the heel and tacked thereto as at T so that when the outer sole is removed no interstice or crack appears between the heel and seat. If desired, however, the sole Y ma be full length.
gy using an intermediate sole X of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material, the outer sole Y is uniformly yieldably supported thereon throughout its entire extent. This insures that the wear on the outer sole will be distributed over a relatively large area instead of being concentrated in a restricted zone of bearing, thereby diminishing the wear on any one portion of the outer sole. By thus diminishing the wear uniformly throughout the extent of the. outer sole, the life of the outer sole is not only considerably increased but the lia bility of the intermediate sole becoming worn in some particular zone of bearing isI prevented.
Then the outer sole is worn through, it may be readily disconnected from the intermediate sole by severing the stitches S and the intermediate sole exposed as a new, complete and unworn wear surface for direct contact with the ground, said sole itself being securely attached Ito the welt by its own independent stitching S2.
I thus secure the full normal life of the outer sole plus the increased wear imparted thereto by the wear distributive effective of the resilient intermediate sole, and when said outer sole is worn through and removed l have a complete, new and unworn intermediate sole which itself is securely attached to the welt by a line of stitching which has been theretofore covered and protected by the outer sole.
Moreover, the combined moisture excluding and cushioning effect of the resilient intermediate sole effectually waterproofs the shoe and makes it more comfortable to the foot, without, however, detracting in any way from the characteristic neat appearance of the shoe as an article of footwear.
ln practice, the welt W is preferably made of slightly greater width than usual in order to allow ample room for the double row of stitching S', S2, and this stitching compressibl contines the resilient intermediate sole so as to secure the maximum cushioning effect.
My invention is capable of adaptation to various types of shoes, and of various modifications in details of structure, all of which incense may be resorted to without departing from theJ underlying concept, if within the limits of the appended claims.
What l therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a shoe, an upper structure includinfr an upper and an insole, an intermedi-ate sol-)e of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material underlying kand secured to said upper structure, and an outer sole substantially coextensive with and conforming in outline to said intermediate sole and stitched to said intermediate sole and the upper by a line of stitching independent of the means which secure said intermediate sole to the upper whereby the outer sole, when worn through, may be readily disconnected from the intermediate sole and the latter exposed as a new, complete and unworn wear surface for direct contact with the ground.
2. A double soled welt shoe comprising an upper, a welt fastened thereto, an intermediate sole of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material underlying and stitched` to said welt, and an outer sole substantially coextensive 'with and conforming in outline to said intermediate sole and stitched thereto and to the welt by a line of stitching independent of the stitching which fastens said intermediate sole to the welt whereby the outer sole, when worn through may be readily disconnected from the intermediate sole and the latter exposed as a new, complete and unworn wear surface for direct Contact with lthe ground.
3. A double soled welt shoe comprising an lupper, a welt fastened thereto, .an intermediate sole of resilient but wear resisting cushioning material underlying and stitched to said welt, and an outer sole. covering and protectin the stitching which attaches the intermediate sole to the welt and itself stitched through said intermediate sole to the welt by a line of stitching independent of and outside the stitching which fastens said intermediate sole to the welt whereby theouter sole, when worn through, may be readily disconnected from the intermediate sole without disturbing the stitching which attaches the intermediate sole to the welt, and the intermediate sole exposed as a new, complete and unworn wear surface for direct contact with the round.
