Be it known that I, Fnnniinrcn Vf. GnarrnnI-IAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Coolr and State of Illinois, have invented een tain new and useful Improvements in Fluo Structures, of which the following is aA specification.
This invention relates to an improved flue structure and it may be embodied in a so-called smoke stack separate from the building walls as is` common lin power plants, or it may be built into the wall oit a` building as, for example, lin residences or apartment buildin Heretoiore in building cylindrical smoke stacks-of brick ithas been customary, upon deciding the exterior and interior dimensions of the stack, to order specially shaped bricks having arcuate faces ot' the particular curves necessary to Atit into the structure to be built so that the inner and 'outer walls of the stack will be circula-r in crossisection. It is one of the objects ot my `invention to provide a lue structure that will permit ot the use of standard flat-faced bricls and will permit of the bricks being laid in rectangular formation, while at the same time giving an inner bore ot circular cross section which it has been found provides the best draft through the flue.
It is a further object ot the invention to produce a` flue structure which comprises a sectional lining, each section of which is of square or rectangular exterior andcircular interior lwhereby it permits oit the building Vof square or rectangular brick lues while at the saine time providing a circular inner bore which is so desirable.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a sectional structure of the character described, a supporting flange on each section of the lining which is adapted to be built into and virtually `form a part ot' the surrounding brick-work, whereby each lining section is independently supported upon the brickwork and at he same time the flange constitutes a. bond in the brichwork to add strength and stability to the latter.

Each section has a rectangular exterior (shown in this instance as squarci and it has a central bore or hole 7 extending therethrough which is of circular crosssection. ln Fig. 2 is shown a fragment of a wall 9 ot buildingin which the smoke stack is built into the wall, the tiers ot brick being constructed to form ar rectangular space for the tine lining between them.
As the brick-work is built up, the lining is put in place, section by section, and the tlange 8 tralies the place of one row o bricks all around each section. The series ot ianges thus forml binders at spaced peints which add strength and stability to the stach, and each dange independently supports its lining section trom the brickwor'u, so that the lining sections do not rest wholly upon one another. Mortar is et course placed between the abutting ends ot the lining sections the same as between the courses of bricks.
The following advantages flow from my invention: rthe brick-work may be built in rectangular formation, thereby permitting the use of standard bricks instead ot specially shaped arcuate bricks heretofore ernployed for isolated smoke stacks. At the saine time a flue is provided, the interior or which is circular in cross section, thereby giving the best possible dralt. The flanges 8 strengthen and stabilize the brickwork and support the lining Sections independently so that the Whole Weight of the column is not carried by the lewerinost sections. Expert labor heretofore necessary for building circular flue Structures is dispensed with.
I claiin as my invention:
l. A liuc lining section comprising a body havingl a centrally located round bore and a rectangular' exterior provided with a peripheral flange cncirling said body, and ly ing all in one plane, said flange having a thickness oit a single layer of brick or 1nasonry and being centrally located between the ends of the section whereby the Section may readily be built into a niasonry structure either end up.
2. A ilue lining having a plurality of sections, each section comprising a body having a round bore and an angular exterior and flat end faces, the total length ofl said body being equal to the thickness of an odd nuinber ot' layers ot brick, and a single centrally located integral peripheral flange encircling and projecting` from said body and lying all in one plane, the thickness of said projection being equal to the thickness or' a brick and Width of said projection being equal to the Width of a brick wheren into a brick structure either end up, being supporter in place partly by the engagelnent of said flange ivith the brickstructure and partly by abutment of the lower end by said sections may be conveniently built of each section upon the tlat face of the section below.
