UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
W'ILLIAM F. DRAIER, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOBBINS FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,756, dated January 27,1874; application filed January 3, 1874.
. To all whom itinay concern:
Be it known that I,W1LLIAM F. DRAPER, of Hopedale, of the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bobbins of Spinning or Yarn-Twisting Machines; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections, in planes at right angles to each other, of a bobbin and spindle, provided with my invention. Fig.3 is a horizontal section taken through thefriction catch and its chamber in the upper part or head of the bobbin. Fig. 4 is a side view of the spindle, showing the fur- In carrying out my invention the spindle A, at its upper end, is to be furcated or slotted transversely, as shown at a. in the drawings, and there is to extend diametrically across the bore 6 of the bobbin, at or near its upper part, as shown, a wire or cross-bar, b. Such-wire or cross-bar I provide with two circularly-curved springs, c 0, extended from opposite ends of it and in opposite directions, in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and more particularly in Fig. 5, which is a separate view of the cross-wire and its springs. The upper part or head of the bobbin B has a cylindrical chamber, 01, formed within it concentrically with the bore e of such bobbin. The periph' cry of the chamber I usually groove entirely around it to receive the curved springs c c, which, with the cross-bar b, compose what I term the friction-catch 0, the springs of which are to bear against the periphery of the chamher with suflicient friction to enable the spin- (lle, while revolving and in engagement with the catch 0, to revolve the bobbin for taking up the yarn, and yield or give way under any .sudden or undue strain, so as to allow the bobbin to turn around upon and relatively to the spindle, and thereby prevent breakage of the yarn or splitting the bobbin.
In order to prevent the friction-catch C from being accidentally ejected from the bobbin by the spindle, during the act of putting the bobbin upon the spindle,I insert and fix firmly in or to the upper end of the chamber a cap,
plug, or cover, f. By having 011 the crossbar b the pressure-springs to act against the periphery of the chamber in thehead of the I), and at once engage with it so as to revolve" the bobbin.
I do not claim a yielding stop, as shown in the United States Patent No. 142,245, nor the application of such to a b0bbin,or a bobbin. 1
seat or rest applied to a spindle, all being as described in such patent. My invention differs therefrom in having the spindle .furcated at the top, and the cross-bar in the bobbin, and such cross-bar provided with the frictionsprings. My invention does away with the necessity of a seat to the spindle for the bobbin to rest upon, as shown in said patent, and thus diminish the weight of the spindle. Fun. thermore, by. having the friction'catch and chamber in the upper part of the bobbin, and the chamber plugged or covered at thetop, there is no danger of accidental loss of the catch out of the chamber, as there is when a friction-catch is arranged in a chamber at the bottom of the bobbin, and such chamber, of necessity, is open.
What lows:
1. The spindle, notched or furcated at its upper end, in combination with the bobbin chambered at its upper end, and provided with the frictioncatch G, arranged and operating in the chamber of the bobbin, in the manner substantially as specified.
2. The bobbin, having the chamber in its upper end, provided with the frictioncatch C,
and plugged or covered as described, for the JAMEs R. DAVIS, HENRY E. FALLS.
I claim as my invention is as fol-
