T0 all wh0wi z't mag; concevm Be it known that I, ED\VARD P. JONES, a citizen 0tf the United States, residing at Breckenridge, in the county of Summit and State of Colorado, have invented aertain 118W and useful Improvements in a Hammer Drill, of which the follo'wing is a specification.
This invention relates t0 means for operating a drill f0r boring rock and mineral and has for its object to provide an essentially high powered mechanism which Will operate a dri11 by a rotary motion,and a driving action, means being provided for eflecting both actions from a rot-ary spindle.
With the above and numerous other ob jects in view the invention consists in 0ertain nove1 features 0f construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as Will be hereinafter more fully dscribed and claimed.

Referringz t0 the drawing in detail it Will be seen th-at 1 designates any suitable support upon which 18 mounted a cylinder 2 having its rem end open and its forward end partiall v closed by the wa1l 3. A head 4 is associated with the rear end 01? the cylinder 2 so as to receim the rotary spindle 5 which is suitably journaled therein and s-rxtends a distance into the cylinder 2 as shown t0 advnntage in Figure The inner end 01 this spindle 5 is provided with longitudinally extending ribs 6 which are received in corresponding longitudinally extending grooves 7 provided in the 110110W hammer 8 which is rotatably 1nounted within the cylinder 1 and is also capable of reciprocating therein. This hammer 8 is provided 011 its periphery with a plurality of cam grooves 9 Which are engaged 'by rotary Serial 11'0. 498,505.
dogs 10 passing through suitable apertures in th'e Wall of the cylinder 2 and helc1 in place byscrew caps 11. Thus it Will be seen that as the spindle 5 is rotateda 10tary and sliding action Will be imparted to the 1mmmer 8 so tha't it Will revolve and reciprocate simultaneously. An extension 13 having a diameter considerably 1ess than that 0f thehammer 8 is, provided at ics forward end so as 130 extend through the opening in ehe Wall 3.
A t001 receiving casing 14 is suitably mounted 0n the forward end0f the cylinder 2. Preferably this casing 14 is held in p1ace by a pair of rods l5which extend through the flange 16 of the casing 14 and thr0ugh the head 4 as shown to advantage in Figure 1 and these rods are provided with threaded ends so as to receive suitable nuts whereby both che heads 4 and the casing 14 may be snugly he1c1 in engagement With the ends of' the cylinder 2. The forward end 0f ehe casing 14 is provided Wih an opening 17 thro'ugh which one end of the (11'111 tonlwill casing 14 so that the bai1 may be rezidily disengaged from the drilling cool 18 when so desired by m1shing downwardly up0n its rear end as wi]1 be readily understood froman inspection 0f the drawings. A cool operating dr um 23 is rotatably rnounted in the casing 14 and is nrovided with an annular series of ratchet teeth 24 intermediate its ends which are engaged by a spring pressed dog 25 and it will be noted that these ratchet teeth 24 and the (10g 25 are so constructed that the drum 23 Will be fre0 to operate in 0ne direction only. The forward end 0f the drnm 23 1s prov1ded with a noncncular openxng 25 wh1ch rece1ves a CO1- responding end of the drilling t001 18 as Will be readily understood by those skil1ed in the art. A suitable aperture 26 is provided in the drum 23 f'or receiving the spring pressed pawl 27 which engages the annula1. series 0f ratchet teeth 28 provided on the outer periphery of the cylinder 29 which is rotatably mouned Within the drum 23 acljacent its rear end as shown to advan tage in Figure 3. The extension 13 of the hammer 8 extends into this cylinder 29 am]. this extension is provided with a can1 groove 30 which is engaged by a spring pressed dog 81 mounted in the aperture 32 of the cyl inder 29.
It Will be n0ted by referring t0 Figure 3 015 the drawing, that cazn grooves 9 2ue shaped 130 cause a rapid forwardpropulsion 0f hamm'er 8 and extension 18 as spindle 5 is rotated, thereby givinga sharp blow 130 the dri1l at each revolution. It Will also be Seen that the pitch 0f cam groove 30 is greater than ehe pitch of cum grooves 9. As lmmmer S and extension 13 are propelled forward and rotated sann groove 30 Will function t0 rotate the drill' carrying means at proper intervals t0 turn the drill. to a neW position zufter 0x during each blow as may be desirable under working conditions. .If the pitches of' grooves 9 anrl 30 weria the szune, there would-'be n0 tendenoy for 29-t0 tu1n. As these pitches differ, however, there Will be a thrust exerted 0n 31 which may be re.solved into an end thrust taken up in the structure, and a thrust causing rotati0n of 29 with 18, buo ab a relatively different speec1 on movement 0f 13 in 0ne direction, und Will cause rotation 0f 29 in a reverse 'direction frorn the rotation 0f 13 0n its return movernent. An oscillating movement 0f mernber 29 Will therefore be cansed in uccordance with the shape 0f groove 80. Due to the rutchot connection between member 29 und 23, 1ne1nbe1 23 is rotated intennit tently in 0ne dire'ution 0111y and causes turning 01. the dril1. This-rotaoion 01' turning 1n'0vementof the drill may be cauSed either 01112110, forward 0r return movement of ham 1ner extension 30.
Having described a preferred ernbodiment of my invention what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent and claimed as new is:
l. In means f01 operating a boring cool, a han1mer mounted to receive a rotary and a longitudinal movement, an extension provided thereon, a 13001 engaging element provided with an annular series of ratchet teeth on its exterior periphery, a (log for engaging the ratchet teeth so as to prevent the moven1ent 0f the tol engaging element in one direction, a cylind er rotatably mounted within the cool engaging element and provided with an annular series of racchet teeth, a spring pressed dog mounted in the t001 engaging element anal adapted t0 engzige the ratchet teeth o1 the cylinder a spring pressed v d0g' mounted within the cylinder and adapted to engage a can1 groove pro vided in the extension 0f the hammer.

A drill machine comprising rotary .reciprocating means; rotary dri1l carrying means; a ratchet drive member; a cznn groove carried by said first mentioned means; anal 1neans coacting with saidca1n groove to driwa said ratchet drive 1ne1nber and thereby impart intermittent rotary motion to said dril1 earrying means.

A drill machine .coxnprising a rotar cylindrical body portion; rotary drill czmrrying means; a driving cam groove in said body portion co-acting witha fixed member t0 cause a reciprocating motion of said body portion thereby causing a hannner blow 120 be struck on said drill; a ratchet drive membe1 ior rotating said dri11 carrying means; and meuns f0r driving said ratchet 1nmnber fr01n Said body portion comprising a ca1n grooveof relutively greater pitch than the pitch of the carn groove in said body p01-- tion.
