UNITED STATES 1,467,429 PATENT OFFICE.
HUIBIER'I B. HUMP HRLEY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL GAB I LIGHT COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
GAS HEATER.
Application filed October 25, 1922. Serial No. 596,900.
To all whom it may concern: 9
Be it known that I, HUBERT R. HUM- PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in: Gas Heaters, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in gas heaters. V The main objectsof this invention. are First, to provide an improved combined fire back and radiating element for gas heatby the devices and means described in thefollowing specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims,
A structure which is a preferred embodi ment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a front perspective view of a gas heater embodying the features of my invention, the embodiment being in a portable heater.
Fig. II is a detail vertical section on a. line corresponding to line 2-2 of Figs. I, III and IV.
Fig. 111' is a detail view, partially invertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. II'and IV.
Fig. IV is an inverted view of my combinedfireback and radiating element.
Fig. V is a front elevation of a gas heater embodying my invention installed as a wall heater.
Fig. VI is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to .line 6-6 of Figs. V and VII.
Fig. VII is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 7-7 of Fig, VI.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referrin tov the drawing, I have in Figs. 1', II and I I shown my improvements embodied in a portable heater of thet pe shown in the application of Alfred H. umphrey, Serial No. 339,917, filed November 22, 1919, in which a base 1 is provided having an upright or standard 2 on which the body 3 of the heater is pivotally mounted at 4.
The .body 3 is formed as a sheet metal stamping and comprises, back, top, bottom and side walls formed of the continuous outturned flange 5. The burner 6 is mounted below the body and is provided with a plurality of tips 7.
My improved combined fireback and radiating element consists of the rear wall 8 of substantial thickness and body constituting a fire back for the heater. The reticulated front 9 is connected'or formed with the back wall being connected thereto through the integral bosses or tie members 10. These are preferably arranged in'vertically aligned space 13 between the front and rear walls.
The fireback and radiating element'fits within the body walls, the rear wall having flanges 15 at its side edges and a flange 16 at the top.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. V, VI and VII the heater body is provided'with openings 17 at the top so that the product of combustion may pass through the open ings 18 of the top flange 16. This embodiment is especially designed to be mounted or fitted in a recess 20 in a wall, as 21, there being a flue 22 in the Wall provided with a hood 23 at the up with the exception of the holes 17 in the top wall of the heater body, a bracket 24 being substituted for the base 1 torend'er the structure more compact and properly support it within the recess.-
My improved heater is very efiicient and at the same time is attractive in appearance. The fragile part, or combined fire back and radiating element which is formed of earthy material is supported so that it is not likely to be broken in handling, as in assembling or after assembled in the heater.
I have illustrated and described embodiments of my invention which I consider very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate the various adaptations and modifications which might be desirable to adapt my improvements to various types of heaters to which they are applicable, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas heater, the combination with a bined fireback and radiating element fitting within said body with its edges in contact with the walls thereof and consisting of a rear wall constituting a fireback and a foraminate front wall integrally connected to said rear wall by spaced tie members disposed in vertical rows between the openings in the said top and bottom walls of said body, and a burner provided with tips aligned with said openings in said body walls.
2. In a gas heater, the combination with a body member comprising back, top, bottom and side walls. of a combined fireback and radiating element fitting within said body 4 with its edges in contact with the walls thereof andconsisting of a rear wall constituting a fireback and a foraminate front wall integrally connected to said rear wall by spaced tie members, and a burner provided with tips directed between said front and rear walls.
3. In a gas heater, the combination with a body, of a combined fireback and radiating element consisting of a rear wall constitut 55 ing a fireback and a foraminate front wall integrally connected thereto by spaced tie members disposed in vertically aligned rows,
the face of said rear wall having a plurality of projections thereon between the tie mem-' bers, and a: burner provided with tips directed between the rows of tie members.
4. In a gas heater, the combination with a body, of a combined fireback and radiating element consisting .of a rear wall constituting a fireback and a foraminate front wall integrally connected thereto by spaced tie members, and a burner provided with tips directed between the rows of tie members.
5. In a gas heater, the combination with a body, of a combined fireback and radiating element consisting of a rear wall constituting a fireback and a forminate front wall integrally connected thereto by spaced tic members, and a burner provided with tips directed between the front and back walls.
6. A combined radiating element and fireback for gas heaters comprising an imperforate rear wall of substantial thickness, and a forominate front wall disposed in a rearwardly inclined relation relative to the rear wall, said walls being connected by spaced tie members integral therewith, the tie members being disposed in vertical rows, the rear wall having a plurality of spine-like projections.
7. A combined radiating element and fireback for gas heaters comprising an imperforate rear wall, and a foraminate front wall, said walls being connected by spaced tie members integral therewith and disposed in vertical rows.
8. A combined radiating element and fireback for gas heaters comprising a rear wall constituting a fireback, and a reticulated front wall spaced from and formed integral withsaid rear wall, there being a multiplicity of integral projections in the space between the walls.
9. A combined radiating element and fire. back for gas heaters comprising a rear wall constituting a fireback, and a reticulated front wall spaced from and connected to said rear wall by integral spaced tie members.
'10. A combined radiating element and fireback for gas heaters comprising an imperforate rear wall constituting a fireback, and a foraminate front wall disposed in spaced relation to said rear wall and connected thereto by a multiplicity of tie members, the rear wall having a multiplicity of projections in the space between the walls.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HUBERT R, HUMPHREY.
