Description

A. H. VANFUSSEN.
Mill-Picks.
Patented 1an. A20. 1187.4.
No. l46,729,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
ALLEN H. VANFOSSEN, OF NORTH WALES, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILL-PICKS.
Specification formirg part of Letters Patent No. 146,729, dated January 20, 1874; application fili di December 15, 1873. s
To all wliom it may concern.:
Beit known that I, ALLEN H. VANFossEN, of North Wales, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mill Pick and Hammer; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure 1. is a perspective view broken out. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section.
The invention relates to pick-hammers for dressing the faces of millstones; and consists in a peculiar construction, hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
A represents the helve of a mill-pick hammer, and B the socket-head that receives the pick or sections of picks. The head B has an oblong rectangular socket, b, made in transverse section suficiently long to receive the face pick or sections C arranged in one direc'- tion, While at right angles thereto it is sufficiently short to receive the channel or furrow pickor sections D. In order to secure these in place, I make tap-holes E E in one side and end, respectively, of the head B, and use in one or other thereof, according to requirement, a set-screw,-F. The tap-hole E is placed in the middle of the front or rear face of the head B, to allow the line of gravity to pass through the middle of head, as otherwise the hammer has a tendency not to strike true or with the same force along the Whole Working-edge of the pick. On the side opposite to the tap-hole E', I cast a solid projection, G, which is sut'- ticiently large to balance the tap-hole E', together with the screw. The sections C I) of picks may be easily removed and sharpened by grinding, and, as they become shorter, may be re-enforced by supporting-blocks H that vary in length according to the Wear upon the pick-sections.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The head B, having an oblong rectangular socket and tapholes E E formed on its side and edge, in combination Withset-screw F, substantially as shownand described.
2. A mill-pick hammer having a taphole, E', formed on one edge ofthe holder, substantially as shown and described.
ALLEN H. VANFOSSEN.
