narra s'rrsN RAILWAY BOLT.
Application 1ed`N0vember 3, 1921. Serial No. 512,460. i i
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, JAMES I-IARTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ynew and useful improvements in railway'bolts, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effectivebolt of novel construction for supporting telegraph or telephone wires along the rails of a railway track, thereby eliminating the necessity of planting poles to support such wires.
Another object of this invention is to provide a railway bolt having a wire holding member formed therewith and having a removable wire holding member mounted on the end of the vbolt opposite the member formed with said bolt.
A further object of my invention is to` construct the wire holding members of two parts so that they may be separated for attaching the wires thereto or removing them therefrom.
`With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a perspective view of the meeting` ends of two rails showing a fish plate and the bolts for holding it in place, one of said bolts being constructed in accordance with my invention and illustrating the manner of its use in supporting wires.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged side elevation of my improved bolt having a portion thereof broken away and sectioned to clearly illustrate the construction.
In carrying out my invention as here einbodied, 2 and 3 represent the meeting ends of two rails with a fish plate 4 disposed across the. joint and held in place by the bolts with nuts 6 thereon and a bolt 7 which embodies my improvement.
The bolt 7 comprises a shank Shaving a head 9 at one end and pro-vided with a re-4 duced projection 10 atthe otherend. c VThe projection is externally threadedas is also the vshank of the bolt at the end adjacent the projection and these threads are preferably rightand left hand ones. the bolt has also a longitudinal hole-11 there- This end of in for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
With the head of the bolt is 'integrally .formed a wire holding member 12 providing the `same is made of one piece but in illus-fV trating one' form orA construction of fmy nvention I have yshown `one member or body 13 of thewire holding device formed asian integral part of the bolt with a complimen-` tary or cap 14 as a separate element detachably fastened to the other member in some suitable manner as by screws 15 passing through the coacting earsl, onel of which is formed with each member at each end thereof. Both of the members have arcuatenotches which align or coact with one another to form holes 17 for the passage of the wires 18 shown in Fig. 1.
At the other end of the bolt is located the i holding members are identical in construcv tion but in thelast mentioned one is formed a stem 19 for registration with the hole 11 to removablymount the wire holding member on the bolt and if found desirable said stem may have threads thereon as'here shown for threaded connection with the bolt.
IVhen the bolt is in use a nut 20 is threaded thereon and after it has been properly tightened ther lock nut 21 is mounted upon the projection 10 of the bolt and if the threadsare at opposite directions whenthe locknut is jambed against the nut 20 the same will be held against accidental `displacement. The lock nut preferably has an outer wall 22 formed therewith so that said lock nut acts as a cap for the end of the bolt and when so made the said outer wall has a hole therethrough for the passage of the stem 19 of the removable wire holding member. I have illustrated both of the wire holding membersk as having two holes for the reception of wires but it is to be understood that this member may be decreased or increased according to the conditions encountered in actual railway practice.
In practice it is only necessary to place one bolt of my improved construction at the diii'erent desired points along a railway track but should the different bolts be placed in staggered relation more than one bolt constructed in accordance with my invention could be used which would permit a greater number oi wires to be strung upon one side of a rail. After the bolt has been placed in position the Wires are run through the holes or the wires may be set in place and ythe complimentary members or caps afterward positioned and fastened in place. After the wires are strung the wire holding members will hold them in spaced relation and will also support them to prevent contact with the rail or'with the ground.
Of course I do not wish to Abe limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from kthe spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a device of the character stated, a bolt provided with a head and having a longitudinal hole at the opposite end, a body formed integral with the head of said bolt, said body having arcuate notches, ears formed therewith, a cap also having arcuate notches for coaction with the body, the Said notches mating to form holes for the reception of wires, ears formed with said cap, and means for detachably Jfastening the cap to the body, a removable wire holding member comprising a body having arcuate notches, ears formed therewith, a cap having arcuate notches coacting with said body, ears formed with said cap, means for detachably fastening the cap to said body, and a st'em formed with the last named body for registration with the longitudinal hole in the bolt to removably mount the last mentioned wire holder on said bolt.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aIiXed my signature.
J AMES HARTLEY.
