' Patented Sept. 4, 1923.
U E f tame FOUNTAIN ATTACHMENT non BRUSHES.
Application filed May 31, 1922. Serial No. 564,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. HnLrRroH,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at 902 Steiner Street, San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have lnvented certa n new and useful Improvements in Fountain Attachments for Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
The resent inventlon is an lmproved fountain attachment for brushes and relates to means for continuously or intermittently supplying a brush, such as a fiat pa nt brush, with fluid to be applied or distributed through the brush.
The objects of the invent on include; (1) The provision of a liquid container provided with means whereby it can be read ily removably engaged on a common brush, and in effect become a part thereof, n wh ch position it will supply the brush wlth paint or the like by a simple finger and thumb manipulation.
(2) The provision of a device ofcharacter described, which will render t unnecessary for a painter to frequently dip and wipe the brush in a bucket, which operat1ons cause a waste of time and material.
(3) The provision of means whereby a brush may be supplied with a sufficient quantity of paint to cover a considerable area, and thus enable a painter workmg on a ladder or other inconvenient place to save time and labor in his occupation.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it 1s to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it may be embodied in other forms, and it is also to be IV-IV.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the mode of operation of my device.
Referring to the diagrams: The numeral 1 indicates a liquid container or fountain here shown as rectangular in form and provlded with a cover 2 hinged at 3. The cover, on the inside, is provided with a rubber gasket 4t to prevent leakage and is also provlded with a spring latch 6 adapted to engage (in closed position) a lug 7 on the contalner 1. The lower end of container 1 is curved nwardly at the bottom, as shown at 8, where 1t terminates in a restricted discharged orific.e 9, which is so positioned that when the device is clamped to a brush 11' the liquid leaving orifice 9 will enter the bristles of the brush from the side and at a point near the handle.
The orifice 9 is controlled by a slide or closure 12, slidable vertically between the wall of the container and a yoke or band 13 which overlies the container and engages the sides thereof.
The slide 12 is provided with upturned ears 13*, which afford convenient means for sliding the closure to open or closed position.
To conveniently clamp the fountain to a brush, I provide the following means: At 14: I show a bridge member, through the U- shaped portion of which extends a pin 16. Pivotally mounted on this pin and in eccentric. relation thereto is a cylindrical member 17 from which extends a tongue or handle 18.
When this handle is rotated to open position the eccentrically mounted member 17 is in a position to clear the handle of a brush extended under the bridge 14:, and when the handle is in the full line position shown in Fig. 2 the said member engages the brush and forces it against upstanding shar pointed studs 10 and thus lock the brush to the container.
When the device is thus engaged with a brush, it overlies the brush and the combination may be grasped and manipulated between the thumb 21 and fingers 22 in the usual manner.
In operation, if more paint is required, a slight pressure exerted by the fingers 22 will depress the outer wall of the container 1 and liquid will be forced into the bristles through orifice 9. In finishing oil or other operations requiring no replenishment of paint the thumb 21 manipulates the ears 13 and closes orifice 9.
I claim:
1. A fountain attachment for flat paint brushes and the like comprising a relatively flat liquid container adapted to overlie a brush, a bridge member on said container, a tongue member eccentrically mounted in said bridge member and adapted, when rotated to secure and engage a brush between said bridge and said container, and studs upstanding on said container so positioned as to penetrate said brush when so engaged.
2. A fountain for brushes comprising a fiat liquid container, clamping means carried by said container for removably engaging a brush, a tapered portion on said container terminating in a discharge orifice adapted, when pressure is applied. to the walls of the container, to discharge liquid against the side of the brush so engaged, and a closure for said orifice slidable to open and closed positions.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
