which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to'an improved umbrella support adapted to be worn by those whose occupations render it necessaryor desirable that the hands should be kept free" and unincumbered for the performance of various activities. Referring more particularly to the de tails of the inventionand to the specific embodiment thereof shown, the numeral-Ides ignates my improved umbrella support in its entirety. This support is adapted to be" detachably worn and includes a base structure 2, which in this instance consistsessene tially of a wooden panel of substantially rectangular formation, although this material and form :are not strictly essential in carrying out the invention. this arrangement on the part of the straps it will be apparent that the base structure may be securely and positively connected to the wearer in the position indicated and is capable of providing a rigid securing base for an umbrella which will relieve the wearer or the necessity of effecting the support and manipulation of the umbrella. Further, the straps admit of adjustment to enable the same to be adapted to wearers of different size. The adjustment or the two buckles provided in the straps is sullicient to effect the application or removal of the base. Carried by the strap 6 is a strap loop 15, which serves to hold an umbrella when not in use. This loop is so located that the umbrella can be suspended ina convenient position.

To permit of the convenient attachment or an umbrella stand to the base structure, the latter is provided with a vertically disposed slot let, covered substantially by a metallic plate 15 in which a registering vertical slot lo-is provided. Arranged ior vertical adjustment within the slot is: is a nut 17 in which is threaded a lower clamping device a bolt and has its threaded shank positioned within the nut 17, the outer end of said device being formed to include resilient spaced stai'l' gripping jaws 19 which are produced by longitudinally slitting one end of the clamping device as indicated by the numeral 20 so that the outer end of said device will be substantially tapered when an umbrella staff 21 is positioned between said jaws. This construction is clearly shown in Figure 4 wherein it will be seen that by providing the shank of the device witha wing nut or its equivalent 22, the said aws 19 may, upon the manipulation of the nut 22 be firmly forced into frictional gripping relationship with the stail 21 sothat the latter will be securely supported in conjunction with the base structure. Moreover, the formation of the device is such that the clamping jaws will be capable of operating elliciently irrespective of the varying proportions of the various umbrella stalls which are capable of being positioned therein. In fact, this feature of adjustability is found throughout my improved umbrella support, so that the latter may be universally used under all conditions. A second wing nut 23 is also mounted upon the shank of the clamping device 18 and is adapted tobe forced into frictional engagementwith the outer face of the plate 15 and to thus operate in connection with the nut 17 for maintaining the clamping device in any of its vertical positions of adjustment. it will be appreciated of course, that the 1. vertical adjustment of the clamping device admits ofcorresponding adjustment on the positioned within a nut 27 longitudinally adjustable within a horizontal slot 28 provided in the upper part of the base structure. This slot is in part covered by a meta lic plate 29in which is formed a horizontal slot disposed for registration with the slot 28 and adapted to receive the shank of the rod 25, the said plate also serving to retain the nut in its position of application within the slot 28. A lock nut 31 may be provided upon the rod, for engagement with the outer wall of the plate29 which nut will serve to lock and retain therod 25 in any of its horizontally adjusted positions. The outer end of the rod is equipped with a longitudinally adjustable sleeve 32 capable of being retained in an adjusted position upon said rod by means 01": a wing nut 33. The sleeve is formed with a resilient clasp 34, in which the intermediate portion of the umbrella staff 21 is capable of being readily secured and yet firmly retained, whereby through the cooperative action of the u per and lower clamping means the umbrella will be securely supported in its position '01"- use. The horizontal adjustment provided by the slot- 28 aomits of lateral adjustment of the hood of the umbrella so that the latter may be properly'centered over they head of the wearer.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a simple, usefuland practical article for accomplishing the end set forth. The use ofthe device enables the wearer to secure the complete shelter afforded by an umbrella and yet to enable the hands to be employed in the pursuit of various activities without in any way being hampered in movement by the umbrella or associated structure. These cooperative'features contribute toward the production of of a wearer, avertically adjustable clamping means and a horizontally adjustable clamping means carried by said panelfor detach-- ableconnection with an umbrella staff.

spaced staff engaging clamping jaws carried by said base, means whereby said jaws may be maintained in various verticalpositionsof adjustment with respect to said base, and a stabilizer connected with the upper part ofsaid base and designed for engagement with an umbrella staff.

6. An umbrella carrier comprising a rigid base having a vertical slot provided therein, a clamping device vertically adjustable in connection with said slot and disposed for frictional connection with an umbrella staff,

said base having a horizontal slot provided in the upper part thereof, a stabilizing clamp horizontally adjustable in connection with said slot disposed for engagement with an umbrella staff above said clamping device, and straps connected withsaid base for removably positioning'the latter upon the body of the wearer.
