DRILL-non TOOL.
Appiiea'tion ined May 1v,
fo all whom #may concern.' e
Be it lnown that we, HARDAMAN B. lVnAri-innsnr and JOHN F. BOZEMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at West Columbia, in the 'county of Brazoria, Stateof Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Rod Tools; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
VThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and particularly to wrenches adapted for use in connection with well drill rods. y
One object of the invention is to provide a wrench of thischaracter by means of which the upper portion ofthe drill joint .may be held against move-ment while the lower portion is being unscrewed therefrom.
Another object of the invention'is to provide a wrench of this character which is simple in construction, formed of few parts,
and which can be manufactured at a com-V.
paratively low cost.
A further object isto provide a wrench of this character which has a cam gripping jaw face, said jaw face being readily removable for the purpose of replacement when worn or for the application of a different sized jaw face. Y Y
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the Jfollowing description when taken in consideration with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench made in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2 is aA vertical longitudinalsectional view through the wrench on the line "other end. Formed longitudinally through the block, andopening through the bottom of the recess end 11, and the inner side of the bifurcation 12, is an Opening 13. Disposed longitudinally through this opening 13 is a member 14, the head of said member being arcuate as shownat 15, and at each 1922. 1 frlerial'lbl'o.v 551,629.4
end of said arcuate portion is a notch or reend to the Vother vand has its outer Vface formed with a longitudinal'series of ratchet teeth 19. Theend of themember 14, which carries the jaw face 17, is disposed tol swing vin the lopening 13, and project therefrom 4into the recess 11, as clearly seen in Figures 1 and 3. The other end of the member 14 -is in the form of a handle lever 20, and projects beyond the'bifurcation ,12. A pivot` bolt 21 is disposed through the bifurcation and the member 14, whereby said member 14 is pivotallysupported within*k the member 10. f
Disposed across the recessed end of the member 10, is an arcuate jaw member 22, one end of which is formed with a reduced apertured lug 23, which enters a recess 24 at .one side of the recess 11, and receives therethrough a pivot pin 25. Pivotally supported on a transverse pin 26, disposed through the member 10 at the other side of the recess are the links 27, vand pivotally carried by the outer ends of these linlsvis a cam member 28, which is adapted to engage with a shoulder 29, formed o-n the adjacent end of the member 122, whereby to lock said end of the member 22 against the member 10, in embracing relation to. the upper portionof a drill joint. j 1
The pivot bolt 21 has an extension 21 provided with an eye 3() for the reception of a cable or cord for suspending the wrench in the proper position with respect to the drill joint. i' v Vhen the device is properly engaged around the drill joint and the member 2O` is rocked on its pivot so as to bring the thicker end portion of the member 17 into biting engagement with the drill rod joint, this part of the Oint will be held stationary while the lower part is being unscrewe therefrom. f
1What is claimed is A pipe turning, tool includingv a ring formed of lpivotally connected sections, one of the sections having a bifurcated extension formed centrally on its convex face and lying in the plane of the section, said portion ofthe ,sectionliaving an arcuate recess comico . 2 I Y Y1,466,319
