IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,560, dated Januaryv 20, 1874; application iiled December 10, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HORACE WAY, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lash-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in wash-boards; and it consists in forming the face of the board of alternate sections of corrugated surfaces, upon which the clothes are rubbed, and sections of brush or bristle work, which serve to retain t-he soap and keep a constant lather upon the board, as will be more fully described hereafter.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

4 a. represents the frame-work of anordinary wash-board, each one of the side pieces of which has a groove, c, cut in its inner side. Into these grooves are slipped a number of corrugated sections, d, formed of wood or any other suitable substance, and which form the rubbingsurfaces for the clothes being washed.

In between each Aof these sections is placed a narrower strip or section, c, of brush work of any kind, the bristles of which are on a level with the top of the sections d, and which serve to catch and retain the soap so as to keep a constant lather on the board. The sections d have slight rabbets cut intheir sides to receive the edges of the sections c, so that 'the sections d will press up against the bristles and protect them from heilig broken down. Should anyof the sections become broken or injured` in any way, by removing the end piece g it can be readily taken out and replaced by another. The number of each or both of 'these sections may, ot course, be varied at pleasure.

I am aware that a board having a section of bristle-work at the top and a rubbingsurface below is not new. l

Having thus described my invention, I claim- A wash-board having its face formed of alternate sections of corrugated and brush surfaces, substantially as set forth.
