' the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cardv or Placar'l Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to card or placard holders and particularly to devices of this type adapted to beatta-ched to tank carsjor' other containers of infian mables to removably secure the cards or placards thereto uponWhich may be displayed the required warning thatthe contents of the car is inflammable. r 1 J-leretofOre paper or cardboard cardshave been employed but these have been found objectionable because they were easily destroyedby, the elements such as wind and rain, Therefore cars which were dispatched properly placarded as required by-the reg-11 lations'of theBureau of Explosives haveat their destination been" found to be 'Ininus these required placards because during transit the same have been destroyed in the ner above mentioned. 1 w

ltis therefore the object of this invention to provide a metallic cardor placard and a holder whereby thesame maybe remov ably secured in place- On one face of the" placardwill be stenciled the inflammablesign-and on the reverse- .side the name of the owner or lessee and home port so that;

when there is no need for the placard. under the Bureau of Explosives regulations the placard mayibe reversed toindicate-the name; of the owner 'or operator and the home port of the car. Of course even when the placard is reversed the other side of: the placard is visible from'certain angles.

Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters inclicatelike parts it will be seen that there is. illustrated a portion of a tank car 10 pro-. vided with a running-board 11. In practice it will be desirable although not necessary to provide four of the holders and cards to a tank car, the holders being bolted from the bottom of the running-board adjacent the inner edge thereof as clearly illustrated, one holder being arranged at each end of the car and at each side.

The holder comprises acasting12 provided with a base 13 formed by bending the body of the holder at right angles. Bolts l l passing upwardly through apertures 14: formed in the base 13, pass through the run ning board 11 and nuts 15 are employed for rigidly holding the holder in place.

.The holder is formed of metal and may be cast or maybe formed of sheet metal properly shaped. In either event there is provided an angular groove or recess 16 composed of two right angular portions and adapted to receive two sides of a metal placard or card 1?. The recess or groove 16 is formed by providing a. pair of spaced flanges 18, U shaped in cross section and spaced a' sufticient distance to loosely receive the edge of the placard or card 17. Oneend of this groove is closed by a lip 19 while the other. end open as at. 20, see particularly Figs. 2, a and 5. i

The placard 1? is formed with angular extensions or corners 21 which are adapted to lie in the closed end 19 and the open end 20 of the placard receiving recess. Obviously in inserting the placard in place the one corner 21 is inserted inthe closed end 19 of t-herecess and the other end then brought into the position illustrated in Fig.

Obviously the number 02E holders and placards may be varied as may their position upon the car. Obviously they may be secured to the car in any position as in either event the placard 17 will beloched to the holder to eliminate the possibility of the same becoming lost. 7 It will be furthermore obvious that by reason of the engagement of the placard by the holder throughout two of its edges 1 that the placard will rei=nforced and prevented to some extent at least from becoming mutilated or being otherwise rendered unfit for use. Obviously a metal placard is inherently more durable than the paper or cardboard placard now universally use and the chances of loss of the placards by reason of the inclemency of the weather is practically eliminated.

While the physical embodiment'of the invention described and illustrated'herein is 4 found to be satisfactory and eflicient in every respect it is not intended that this invention be unnecessarily limited but reservation is hereby made to make such changes in details of construction as may come within 2.
