randpa's ROUNDAEGUT;
ApplicationfiIed August fii, 1219. Serial No. 320,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnNnsrKoHLnn, a citizen-of the .United a'States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denier and State of Coloradqhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gyratory Roundabouts; and-i do hereby declare the followingtozbe a full, clear, and enactdescription of the invention, such as will enable-others skilled inthe art to which itappertains to make and use the same. 7 7
' This invention relates to an amusement. apparatusfa nd particularly to that type of apparatus. involvinga' rotary passenger carrier organized and constructed to gyrate or. movethrough a .peculiar orbit designed to produce mirth and amusement for passengers that are suitably accommodated on the carrier. V
It is an object of: the present invention to provide a simple, practi'cable,.and inexpensibly constructed apparatus, and further to provideian amusement apparatus which re quires a mini-mum number of employees or personal attendants in the operation of the apparatus. a device of this kind which will accommodate a considerable number of passengers comfortablygtoeffect variable gyrations of the passenger carrier; and also to provide an effective organization of brakes and convenient means of ingress and egress for passengers.
WVith the above and other objects in view, as will be'rendered manifest to those versed 'in the art, the invention consists in the construction, the combination, and in details and arrangements of the parts, as more particularly described hereinafter relative to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the apparatus, certain of the parts being broken away centrally and vertically to indicate details of construction.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus, part of the same being broken away to illustrate arrangement of the parts of the driving mechanism. 7
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a passenger carrier 2 is provided, and while here shown as 'in the form of a plane circular platform, obviously it may be given any other suitable plane configuration. The floor of the carrier 2'is'provided with a Further objects are to provide.
circle or other suitable arrangen'ientof seats 3, preferably disposed near the edge ot the noor so that the passengers will be carried through a'inaxiinum sweep or orbit of move ment, and preferably the edge'ot the carrier or table 2 isprovided with a guard or hand rail i ans entrance or exit gates at l for obvious purposes. To increase the ornamental features of the apparatus. and provide for the aeconnnodatien of a musical apparatus, or orchestra, the center 0; the earner is provided with a pagoda 5, unoer which is represented a'mechanical, musical instr ment 6, although obviously this may be replaced by an orchestra oi suitable pieces.
'TIQ carrier 2 is provided with a central downwardly projecting support shown as a shaft or column ,'prejectingthrough a bearmg 8 formed. in the upper portion of an arch or other suitable support 9, which, in turn, is mounted on a main rotating; member such as turn-table l0, supported preferably on anti-friction bearings 11 running on a foundation structure 12, this latter having a bearlng 13 to receive the central'shaitt or trunnion 14L ofthc turn-table 10. The lower end of the shaft '4', of the passenger-carrying floor or barrier-2, is journall d in an appropriate bearing '7 on the upper surface of the turntable 10, so that the turn-table may have rotary motion about its own axis, this carrying the carrier 2 around with it whilst the carrier 2 may have an independent rotary motion which is imparted to it by a suitable drive mechanism applied to the shaft 7. In this case the shaft has it a worm gear 15 a worm 16 driven by a suitable motor 17, which is mounted on the top of the turn-table 10.
I prefer that the shaft 7 be set with its end. eccentrically or crank-like with respect to the axis oi? the turn-table 10, and in addition to its being so eccentrirally set, it is tilted from the vertical so as to hold the floor or carrier 2 at all times at a slightly inclined plane with relation to the horizon.
The turn-table 10 is rotated through means of a motor 20, driving a suitable reduction gear 21, the pinion of which engages circumferential gear 22 on the periphery of the turn-table.
It will be seen. because of the inclination of the sh aft 7 and floor 2, at each rotation of the turn-table 10', the floor will be carried position at the sides of the inclined carrier 2.
.The combination of the two movements due to the rotation of the turn-table and to opposite and on a substantial level with the top of the landing platform 27, ingress and egress from the platform carrier could not be conveniently had. In order, therefore, that the platform carrier may be stopped at the-proper position with the entrance at opposite the landing platform, I provide inde pendent driving mechanism for the turntables and platforms. By this means the turn table may be conveniently stopped when the eccentric shaft 7 is farthest from the landing platform 27. This will bring the platform carrier at the proper inclination so that one edge of it will be on a level with the landing platform. .The operation of the motor 17 will of course'be continued until the entrance and exit gate are brought opposite the landing platform. In order toaid the checking of the rotation of the platform so as to bring it to the desired position and to hold it in that position while passengers are getting on or off of the platform, a shoe 28 is provided, Which may be manipulated by the lever 29by an operator on said platform.
Conductors 31 and collector rings 32 on the perimeter of the turn-table 10, conduct electricity from a source not shown to op crate the motor 17;
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim is:
1. In an amusement apparatus, a gyratory platform carrier having an. axis of rotation inclined fixedly to its axis of revolution and provided with an entrance and exit accommodations for passengers, a landing platform, a holding device thereon adapted to engage the gyratory platform, and means for independently imparting rotary and revolutionary movements to said platform.
2. In an amusement apparatus, a platform carrier provided with anentrance and exit and acconnnodations for passengers, a turn table, an inclined support projecting from the turn table and 'rotatably supporting the platform carrier in a plane inclined to the plane of rotation of said turntable, means mounted in a fixed base having transmission devices for rotating the turn table, and means independent of the turn table rotating means, and mounted in the turntable for rotating the platform carrier about its axis.
In testimony whereof I affix my sigature.
