Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,638, dated April 8, 1856.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, ROYAL HATCH, of Stratford, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Washboards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal section of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a side or face view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

My invention cons-ists in forming the faces or sides of the wash board of beaded rounds, which are placed side by side, t-he beads of every alternate round fitting in t-h-ehollows of the intermediate rounds as will be hereinafter fully shown and described, so that a perfect corrugated surface is obtained for the clothes to be rubbed over, and one that will allow the water to pass through and still retain the suds.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed. to describe it.

A, A, represent the two side pieces of the wash board, and B, B, are two cylindrical rails, which are secured, one at the upper, and the other at the lower parts of the side pieces; the rails and side pieces forming a rectangular frame, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Above the upper rail B, and between the two side pieces A, A, there is secured a flat strip C, which has a recess D, made in it to receive the soap.

The inner sides of the rails B, B, have longitudinal recesses (a) made in them in which tenons (7)) on the ends of beaded rounds E, are fitted. The form of these beads (c) is distinctly shown in both figures, and they are at equal distances apart, the cavities or hollows (cl) between the beads corresponding inversely with the beads. The rounds E, are placed side by side the beads (c) of every alternate round, being fitted in the cavities or hollows of the intermediate rounds, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.

By this mode of construction a perfectcorrugated surface is obtained for the clothes to be rubbed against, and the water which is absorbed by the clothes and eX- pressed from them while being rubbed over the corrugated surface will pass between the beaded rounds, but the suds will be retained upon its surface, the spaces between the rounds being sufficiently wide to allow the water to pass through, but still so narrow that the suds cannot pass through with it. The clothes consequently while being rubbed are fully acted upon by the soap, and the clothes may be washed in a perfect manner and with much greater facility than the ordinary wash boards in use.

I am aware that washboards constructed with beaded rounds have been previously used, but arranged differently from the plan herein shown. The 'beads for instance are placed in line with each other, so that quite large openings are formed by the cavities or hollows, and these openings allow the suds to pass through, and the water as it is eX- pressed from the clothes passes direct-ly through the openings, thereby causing the clothes to be deprived of the necessary amount of soap and moisture while being rubbed over t-he beaded rounds. My improvement obviates this difficulty.

I do not claim the beaded rounds irrespective of the manner in which they are arranged or fitted together, for they have been previously used, but

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The beaded rounds E, when secured in the frame of th-e board as shown, viz., by having tenons on the ends of the rounds litted in the grooved rails B, B, and the beads of every alternate round, fitted in the cavities or hollows (d), of the intermediate rounds, as herein shown and described for the purpose specied.
