SELF-FILLING LEAD PENCIL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEHU B. DosoHU'rz, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Self-Filling Lead Pencils, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyine' drawings, forming a part thereof.
*y invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in self-filling lead pencils, and has for its primary object the construction of a lead pencil provided with a magazine for holding any desired number of leads and which is easily accessible for iilling, and when lled, the leads will automatically feed themselves into the path of the plunger.
Another object of my improvement is the provision of a simplified construction for feeding the leads.

Referring to the drawings- 9 indicates the upper portion of the pencil casing which has secured thereto a clasp 10 of any desired construction. 11 indicatesy the front portion of the casing which is provided at its forward end with an open tip 12, through which the leads roject when the pencil is in use. Located in tlie portion 9 of the casing is a frame 12 provided with a slot 13. The upper end of the frame 12 is secured to the operating knob lafhy being soldered thereto or in any other suitable mechanical manner. Mounted on the forward end of the frame 12 is a disc 15 Serial No. 491,033.
i which is adapted to lit and rotate the section of the casing 9. The purpose of this disc is to steady the forward end of the frame and'l prevent the front end of the feeding plunger from wobbling when the pencil is in use. Mounted in the frame 12 is a screw threaded feeding plunger 16 in the upper end of which is located a pin 17. The pin 17 is'located in and adapted to move in the slot 13 of the frame 12. 18 indicates the magazine for the leads and which may be constructed of any material or size to receive the various leads now in use. The magazine has closed ends 19 and 20 which are circular, and inserted through the magazine and through these ends is aj tube 21. The tube 2l being provided with an internal screw threaded end 22, which projects beyond the upper end of the magazine and with an end 23 which projects beyondj the lower end. The tube 21 is cut away about half as at 24 and is of suihcient size to permit the passa-ge of a lead therethrough into a semi-circular bottom 25. The magazine 18 is provided with a substantially l/-shaped chamber 26 which leads or opens into the bottom 25. This V-shaped chamber 26 is of sutlicient size to hold a number of leads and when one lead has been used from the bottom 25, the other leads are automatically fed in by gravity as desired. The front section of the casing 11 is snugly fitted on the forward portion of the magazine 18 and is held thereon by friction, but of course, is removed in the operation of filling the magazine, and the top section 9 is snugly fitted over the upper end of the magazine 18 and is held thereon by solder. lin practice about half of the magazine is inserted in the upper end of the casing 11. and the other half inserted in the lower end of the casing 9. The end 23 projects far enough in the casing 11 as to direct the leads through the tip 12a. Mounted in the internal screw threaded end 22 of the tube 21 is the screw 'threaded plunger 16. The screw threaded end 22 is so positioned as to direct the forward end of the plunger along the bottom 25. ln order to fill the magazine 18, the front section 11 is removed and the leads are inserted in the V-shaped cham ber 26, as illustrated in Fig. 7. rilhe plunger 16 is then Withdrawn by turning the operating knob so that the opening leading into the bottom 25 is clear and then by the action of gravity a single lead will pass into the bottom Qthen by turning the knob in the opposite direction, the forward end of the plunger 16 is forced against the upper end of the lead, andthe same may be fed forward for use. lVhen one lead has been used, by withdrawing the plunger to clear the opening leading into the bottom 25, another lead is fed in by gravity.
As previously pointed out, the magazine may be filled with any number of leads by merely removing the casing ll, and when so filled, the various leads may be fed in as used up through the slot and simple operation of turning the operating knob..
The clasp l() is positioned in alinement with the chamber 2G and indicates ,the position of the magazine for filling and for feeding in the leads as they are used up.
Having fully -described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A self-filling lead pencil, comprising a sectional casing, a magazine having a V- shaped chamber located in the casing, said magazine capable of holding a plurality of leads a screw threaded plunger having its lower end screw Seated in the magazine, a frame mounted on the upper' end of said screw threaded plunger and adjustable on said plunger for rotating the plunger, and an operating knob secured t0 said frame for withdrawing the plunger so as to allow a lead to drop into position.
2. A self-filling lead pencil, comprising a sectional casing, a magazine provided with a V-shaped chamber capable of containing a plurality of leads, and a semicircular bottom mounted in the casing, a tube carried by one end o'f the magazine and in alinement with said bottom, a screw threaded tube carried by the opposite end of said magazine and in alinement with said bottom, a screw threaded 'plunger mounted in the screw threaded tube, a frame mounted on the upper end of the plunger and adjustable relative to said plunger, and an operating knob secured to the upper end of said frame for withdrawing the plunger and allowing a lead to lodge in the bottom of the chamber, and in alinement with the tube.
3. A self-filling lead pencil, comprisin a casing, a magazine adapted to hold and feed plurality of leads singly by gravity located in the lower portion of the casing, a screw threaded plunger mounted in the magazine, a frame having a slot mounted on the plunger, a pin mounted in the plunger and located in the slot of the frame,`
and an operating knob secured to the upper end .of said frame/for withdrawing the plunger so as to allow the lead to drop downward and lodge in front of said plunger.
