Be it known that I, HIRAM GonnoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser Pads, of whichthe following is a specification. r
This invention relates to improvements in presser pads used in shoemaking, and has for its particular object to provide a device 'of this character which will perfectly press a layer of thin grain leather against the'entire surface of the out-sole of the shank of the shoe and also up into the breast of a full Wooden heel known as the Louis type.
A furtherobject is to provide apresser pad of the character above described which will adjust itself to fit Louis heels of different sizes and shapes, and save approximately fifty per cent in time over the method now practised in securing the layer 'of grain leather in place.
The grain leather layer which partly finishes the underside of the shoe, usually .covers the shank and the front face or breast of the heel and isglued thereto, and the methcds now practised in pressing this thin layer of leather in place, usually by strings and steaming processes, is an arduous,slow and tedious task to make the layer adhere evenly and perfectly throughout its entire area as it should be in first class goods.
These and other objects hereinafter set forth are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the iinproved device secured in pressing position to a shoe.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a shoe showing the improved device in section and applied in pressing position.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the presser pad, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the presser pad.
Similar reference numerals in all of the fi `ures of the drawing designate like parts.
Referring to the drawing 6 designates the presser pad and 7 the holder therefor. The presser pad is preferably made of pure soft rubber and formed with a concave groove 8 which extends around at least three sides thereof, and forming side flanges 9. The groove 8 is curved to conform to the underside of the shank and front face of the heel of the shoe, both longitudinally and transversely, and on its rear face, adjacent its fiat side, is preferably formed with a conveX curved protuberance 10 which is adapted to fit into the usual curved hollow formed in the heel. The pad is provided with a rigid boxing or holder 7 preferably formed ,of steel, and said boxing is formed with a roughened top surface 11, and is secured to the presser pad by the screw-bolts 12 which preferably extend entirely through the presser pad from one side leg 13 to the opposite leg 13' in which they are threaded.
fter the grain leather layer has been placed in position, on the sole shank, and against the faceof the heel, (it being understood that'suitable glue has first been applied) the. presser pad is then placed in position betweenthe shank and the heel, and is forced and retained in position by a screwclanip which consists of a yoke formed with a Connecting bar 14: and side-arms 15, the connecting bar being preferably tapered on its inner side to engage between the raised portion of the roughened surface 11, a crosshead 16 rigidly connected between the free ends of the side-arms 15, and an adjusting screw 17 which has a threaded engagement with said cross-head 16 and is provided with a turn-handle 17' at one end and a pivoted foot 18 at its opposite end adapted to engage the portion of the shoe-last exposed at the open side of the shoe.
The pivoted foot 18 is preferably connected to the adjacent end of the screw 17 by a ball and socket joint 19 and on its free side is provided with a pin-projection 20 which is adapted to engage a hole in the top of the exposed portion of the shoe-last.
As the screw-clamp is 'tightened, the presser pad is forced tightly and closely in position against the grain layer, and as the presser pad is being forced, the grooved contour thereof gradually smooths out the layer and fits it snug over the surfaces to becovered. The presser pad is retained in the clanped position until the adhesive has set sufciently to hold the layer in place.
Groove 8 is formed sufilcientlydeep to accommodate shanks and heels of various sizes, and roughened face ofthe steel-boxing or holder, together with the ball and socket joint of the screw, enables the clamping means to be adjusted to different positions With respect to the presser pad to securethe best results.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed is i r '1. A device for the purpose described, comprising a presserpad formedof a block of soft elastic material and provided With a concave groove around its periphery, said block being of such dimensionsf'as 'to simultaneously fit and cover the exposed face of the shank of a shoe and thebreast of the heel thereof, and means for clamping the device on a shoe.
2. A device for the purpose described, comprising a presser pad formed of a block of soft elastic material and provided Witha concave' groove around its periphery, said block being of such dimensions as to simultaneously fit and cover the exposed face of the' shank of a shoe and the breast of the heel thereof, said pad also being formed With a" projecting protuberance at :one side thereof to fit aho'lloW in the breast ofthe heel, and means for clanping the device to a Sh .i

A device for the purpose described, comprising a presser pad formed of a block of soft elastic naterial and provided With a concave groove around its periphery, said block being of such dimensions as to simultaneously fit and cover the exposed face of the shank of a shoe and the breast of the heel thereof, and a rigid holder fixedly secured to one side of the pad.
4:. A device for .the purpose described,
eomprising a 'presser pad formed of a' block of soft elastio material and a rigid holder fixedto one side thereof, 'said block being of such dimensions as to simultaneously fit and 'cover the eXpose'dgface of the shank of a shoe and the breast of the heel thereof, and a clamping means engaging said rigid holder for `forcing the pad in position and causing it to assume the shape of the engaged parts of the shanl and heel.
5. A device for the purpose described, comprising a presser pad formed of a block of soft elastic material and a rigid holder 'fixed to one side thereof, said block being HIRAM 'onnon.
