TEA TABLE.
Application nled January To all fui/0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, Lonnro ALONzn a citizen of the United States,` and resident oit Chicago7 in the countyoil Cool; and State 01"' Illinois7 have invented certain new and -asetul Improvements in a Tea Table,V of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to furniture and par-k ticularly to a novel tea table construction in which a disappearing handle or pull is provided.
It is customary in the construction ot tables of the character described to provide casters atone end and at the'opposite end A a handle so arranged that the end may be lifted and the table moved from place to place on the two casters. The device of my invention comprises means adapting the table 'for a plurality'oi uses other than that for which it is primarily intended. For example, in the absence of a projecting handle or pull, kthe table may he employed for games of cards or for a breakfast table. Tov that end I have illustrated a` construction in which the operating handle may be caused to disappear underneath the top when not required for use. When requiredj the part may be withdrawn and automatically interloclred with the table by a simple outward pull thereon. When not required the action of depressing the handle enables it to be retracted through the action of a spring. I' am aware that disappearing handles have heretofore been suggested. However my improvement relates to features of construction which render the device more practical in use and operation. Y
The invention will be more readily under-v stood by reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section oi a table constructed in accordance with my invention, the handle being shown in full lines in retracted position and in dotted lines in extended position;
Figure 2 is a bottomplan view; and
Figure 3 is an end elevation partly in section. ,i
In the drawings I have illustrated a table of well-known construction comprising legs 10, side frames 11 and a top 12. Caster wheels 13 may be provided at one end of the table. The disappearing handle comprises a rigid rectangular frame consisting of side .pieces 14, a cross piece 15, and aroundedV handle portion 16. The side pieces are 8,1923. serial No. 611,245.
shaped as tbest shown in? Figure 1v and fextend through openings 1'? in theside frames 11.-l The cross piece rigidly connects the side pieces and is located lunderneath the top,
constituting'the stop for limiting the outwardv withdrawal oi: the arms constituting the side pieces. trips 21 having a notch 1112L in their uppersurtace are secured to the sides'by means ot nails or screws indicated at 23 in 'Figure 2, these strips forming .guideways and supporting the side pieces 14. The Vpointed ends 18 of thejside pieces lcooperate with the, notch 14a in the side pieces as shown in dotted linesl in Figure` 1Q such means constituting an interlock for the handle when in exposed position. A
parts are preferably out ofY contact at that point in order to avoid marring thetop.
Obviously the construction is capable of much modification and I do not wish tobe limited except as indicated in the appended claims. Y
A I claim:
1. In a table, the combination with the legs and top, of a pull therefor, vsaid pull i 'comprising a rigidv rectangular structure consisting of notched side-pieces, and connecting members one of which is shaped to he grasped by the user, the table being pro videdwith notched slide-Ways Within which said side pieces may be reciprocated, and means on the side pieces for engaging the notches in the slide-Ways for `interlocking therewith. 1
2'. ln a` table, the combination with the legs, apertured rarneand top of ay disappearing handle adapted for slidinginovenient in a horizontal glane comprising a pull and side pieces projecting through the apertures in Vsaid frame, guide pieces secured te the inside surface of said raines,l and a spring1 for retracting said parts. I
3. "n a table, the combination With the legsig'apertured Ytrarne and top of a disappearing handle adaptedv Jfor sliding Inovement in a horizontal piane comprising a pull and side pieces projecting through the apertures in said freine, giiide pieces secured to the inside surface or said Jrainesand mea-ns onfthe' sideV pieces for interlocking With the gnidepi'eces When the handle is in exposed position.
4i. In a table, the combination,A `with the legs7 apertured rframeand top of a disap-V pearing handle comprising a pull and side pieces projecting through the apertures in said frame, guide pieces secured to the inside surface of 'said frames, ineens on the side pieces for interlocking With the guide pieceswhen the Vhandle is in exposed position7 and spring means for retracting the parts to kvunexposed position When the interlock is released.
5. n a' table, a ydisappearing pull, consisting of a rigidrectangular frame including twoside pieces and Ytwo cross-piecesfthe outer one or" which 'acts as ka handle, said side pieces having their inner ends pointed, the table having notched slide-Ways adapted to guide the side /pieces and te: interlock therewith in one position of the parts, and a spring mounted to exert an inward Vand downward force, the doWnWard'foree urgingthe parts into interlocked position.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois7 this 4th day of January, 1923.
' LORETO ALONZ.
