. A. G. MACKEY MATCH B OX ATTACHMENT Fil ed May 29. 1922 gw um Hoz Patented July 31, 1923.
.UTNET STATES ALBERT G. MACKEY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, .ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT Fries.
AUTOMAC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
MATCH-BOX ATTACHMENT.
Application filed May 29,
citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Box Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match box attachments and pertains more especially to attachments of this type used in connection with memorandum holders of the-general character disclosed in my application for patent filed February '28, 1922, Serial No. 539,842.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment which is secured in position on the table so as to cause the box of matches to be normally concealed and protected by the table, and which also allows the slide containing the matches to be easily and quickly moved to a position projecting out from an edge of the table to allow of removal of the matches.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment which is secured to the table by the arm of the clamp, so as to thereby eliminate the necessity of the use of separate fastening means therefor.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means, formed on the table which acts to assist in securing the box in position. and which also acts to prevent accidental movement of the slide out of the box.
The invention also aims to provide an attachment of simple and economical construction and has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure l, is a rear elevation;
Figure 2, is a section on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3, is a section on line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4, is a detail view of the holder in detached position.
In proceeding. in accordance with the present invention the table 1, has a suitable spring clamp 2 employed for securing a pad or card thereon and further has a clamp 3 for attachment to the steering column or standard of an autotmobile or to the col- 1922. Serial No. 564,373
umn of a telephone. As disclosed in my said application, the arm f of the clamp is secured to the back of the table by means of rivets, or other suitable fastenings 5, and the present invention proposes to utilize the arm and its securing means for fastening the match box holder in position. Accordingly the holder is formed of a strip or section of sheet metal having a body 6 of substantially U-shape, one of the sides of the body being laterally extended to form,. an attaching wing 7 which is interposed between the arm 4: and the rear face of the table, the wing being penetrated by the fastening rivet 5 which secures the arm to the table.
Thebody 6 is shaped toreceive the commercial size of safety match box B and holds thelatter againstthe under face of the table adjacent the outer end of thelatter and also against the curved or rounded edge 9 of the table. Inward movement of the box and slide is limited by a stop lug 10 which is formed integral with the inner end of the body, while accidental outward movement'of the slide S is prevented by the curved or rounded edge 11 on the outerlend of the table, the latter edgev having but sufiicient engagement with the outer end of the slide S so asto allow the outer end of the latter to be sprung over the edge 11 and thereby moved into and out of the box by the expenditure of but slight force. 3 i
The boxB is preferably held with the match igniting surface substantially flush with the lower marginal edge of the table so as to allow of convenient scratching of the matches thereon, and to also allow the slide to be moved, by pressing against the inner end thereof, to cause the outer end to project outwardly beyond the outer end of the table to permit of ready removal of the matches. From the foregoing it will be seen that the table protects the box and its contents and that the box is effectively held in position and the slide held against accidental movement, while still permitting movement thereof to allow of extraction of the matches. The, arm 4 abuts the adjacent side wall of the body and accordingly acts to brace same and to prevent lateral movement thereof.
The invention while illustrated in connection with a match box, is not so limited,
cigar or cigarette holder, or for holding other articles "of different types.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a support having a flanged side and end edge, and attaching means for the support including an arm, a match box holder including a body of substantially U-shape having a lateral wing extending from its inner side and interposed between the arm and the support, fastening means for the arm extending through the wing to secure both the arm and wing to the support, the body being disposed to have its outer side substantially alined with the flanged side edge of the support to cause the box to be engaged'by said flanged side edge of the support and to cause the outer end of the slide to be engaged by the flanged end edge of the support, and a stop on the inner end of the body to engage the box and slide.
2. In combination with a support and at taching means therefor, a match box holder including a body of approximately Ushape having a lateral Wing extending from its inner side and interposed between the attaching means and the support, and "fastening means forthe holder extending through the wing, the attaching means and the support, the holder having its top confronting the under side of the support so as to hold the box between the holder and the support and to allow the slide of the box to be moved to "project outwardly from amarginal edge of the support.
3. In combination with a support having a flanged'edge, a match box holder, and means to secure the holder to the support so'as to cause anrend of the slide of the match box to be engaged. with said flange edge. I
4. In combination with a support having a flanged edge, a substantially U-shaped match box holder disposed to cause an end of the slide of the match box to be engaged with said flanged edge, and means to secure the holder to the support so as to hold the match box between the holder and the adjacent face of the support.
5. In combination with a support having a flanged edge, U-shaped holder having a wing on one'side thereof secured to the support and havingits opposite side alined with the flanged edge so as to hold the match box between-the holder and the adjacent face of the support and with the outer side of the match box engaged with the flanged edge.
6. In combination with a support having angularly related flanged edges, 21 match box holder, and means to secure the holder to the support so as to hold the outer side of. the match box engaged with one of the flanged edges and an end of the slide engaged with the other of the flanged edges.
7. In combination with a support having an attachingmember, a holder of approxi mately U-shape having its top confronting the support so as to hold a match box between the supportand the holder,'one side of the holder having a wing engaged between the supportand the attaching II1II1' ber.
8. In combination with a support, a matcl box holderhaving a stop on one end and having its opposite end open, means to attach the holder .to the'support and therebehold the'lajtter against accidental movement and still permit movement of the slide into and out of match extracting position.
9. In combination with a support and an attaching arm therefor, an article holder neath and with a side of the box arranged having article holding means and having a member interposed between the arm and the support, and fastening means passed through the support,.the arm and said member for securing all of the parts together.
In testimony whereof I ailixmy signature.
ALBERT Gr. MACKEY.
