Description

.. s. HULL.
Lamps.
Patentedlm1351874;
J()HI\T S. HULL, OF
PATENT OFF? CINCINNATI, oEIo. l
IMPROV`EMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,34! dated January 13, `1874; application filed May 23, 1873.
of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of Which the following is a specification:
.The invention consists of a lamp having a.
hollow handle with perforations in it for the entrance of air to the iluid, said handle being provided with a valve, so that, should the lamp be upset, `the discharge of the fluid through said handle is prevented, as will be fully hereinafter described, the object of my invention being .to improve the light and increase the safety and convenience of the damp, allA ot' which will be understood by reference to the drawings and the bllowing description, in Which Figure 2 is a vertical section, showing clearly the hollow handle A, which is perforated at a., where the air enters, and passes in the direction of the arrows to thefluid-bowl B. Heated gases generated in B pass out through the same conduit-hamlle. al is another hole in the handle for the escape of any Huid which may gather in the handle. The handle, being made detachable, as shown, may be` made very cheaply and rapidly. To prevent the escape of fluid when the lamp is upset, all the joints are made tight by the use of soft Washers, so that there can-4 not be any escape, except through the wicktube or the handle, and, to prevent the latter,
`I provide a valve, a2, in the joint Where the handle is connectedfto the reservoir, as shown in Fig. 2. rEhe seat for the valve, when the lamp is upright, is grooved, so that the air or gases will pass freely either Way, but the` seat in the end of the handle is conical, and, as soon as the valve rests in it from` any cause, the passage becomes closed and the escape of the iiuid prevented. ,l
When it is desired to increase the number of burners, I attach branch fluid-tubes C (l, which conduct the. oil from t-he reservoir to the Wick-tubes D D, and supply these with oxygen through the conduits E E, which, in turn, are fed by A.
Thismakes a very handsome lamp, the burners of which may be increased to any number.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the hollow handle A,
having perforations a for the entrance of air to the fluid-chamber, the cutoff valve a2, arranged and operating as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of May, 1873.
'JOHN S. HULL.
