Description
July 24, 1923. Mwozz M. SEPELYAK DRAFT APPLIANCE FOR AUTOMOBILES Filed April 12, 1922 gnoc'ntow Patented July 24-, 1923.
DRAFT Arrnranon ppl e t n fi Ari-1 To all whom it may concern, v I
Be it known that 1, MIKE SEPELYAK, a" citizen of Czechoslovakia, residing at Verona, in the county of Alle heny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Appliances for Automobiles, of which the follow ing is a specification. h v This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in draft attachments forautomobiles, and has particular reference to an emergency draft appliance to be secured to the automobile for pulling ems-11a, mobile out of mud holes andthe like. I I The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a drum adapted to be secured to a driving wheel 'of the auto mobile with a cableand pulley arrangement anchored to the ground and secured to the front end of the automobila and also secured to said drum to be wound on the drum when a the driving wheel is rotated to pull the automobile out of a mudhole or the like. A further object of the invention has particul ar re ference to a novel type of drum and. a specific connection bet"ween the pulling cable and the drum.
With the above obje cts in view and others that will appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the'same consists in thenovel construction, combination and arrangement of the parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 shows by dotted lines a side elevational view of an automobile with the draft attachment operatively associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the drum detached from the driving wheel and showing the pulling cable secured to the drum,
Fig. 3 is an edge elevational view of the drum,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational View of the drum showing the tensioned bolt closed recess in a side flange of the drum for retaining one end of the pulling cable,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of the drum showing the tensioned bolt closing the open side of the drum flange recess,
' line VII-V1I of Fig. 4 showing earner] Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line VL-VI of Fig. 1 showing tlieflange recess and tensioned bolt, and
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken on sio'ne'd 'springof the recess closure bolt. I
Referring more in detail to "the accom panying drawings, and particularly to Fig.
1, there is illustrated'by dotted linesan auto-" 'mobi'le'emb'odying' achas'sis A, anda rear MIKE SEPELYAK, OF VEBONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
the tenv V drivingwheel'B, the emergency 'draft appli ance associated with the chassis and driving wheel and embodying asystem'o'f pulleys and a cabl'eanchored to" the'gro'und forsame out of a mudhole or the like.
The winding cable druni'of'the'attachment associated with the driving wheel B- is shown in detail Figs. Q-t'o 7, the sameembodying acentral drum portion i'ha'vingoutwardly wardly of the automobile for pulling the:
directed'side'flanges 2 and 3 and a central opening t'to' receive the hubs of the wheel B,
' thedrum being secured to the wheel by anchoring bolts and jc'lamps' passing through openings 5 extending transversely of the drum as shown inFigsyi' and'aand connected to thesp'okesofthe wheel.
'A cable 6 is associa'tedwiththe'drums '1 and carries upon one 'end t'hereofla hoo'k7 as shown in" F ignite a'that is "adapted for detachable"engagement with 't-hflange 3 01i the drum. To provide for such detachable engagement, the flange 3 is provided with spaced peripheral recesses 8 having divergent side walls 9 providing a restricted entrance opening 10 into which the hook 7 upon the cable 6 is received as shown in Fig. 2 with the hook engaging on the inclined side walls 9 as illustrated. To retain the hook within the recess 8, a tensioned lock bolt is provided for closing the outer end of the recess, the lock bolt embodying a bolt head 11 having the end 12 thereof received in the socket 13 provided in the adjacent side wall 9, the bolt head being positioned adjacent the periphery of the flange 3 to form a continuation thereof as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. A stem 14 is carried by the 15 are provided with arcuate slots 17 through which pins 18 carried by opposite sides of the stem 14 projects as shown in Fig. 4E, movement of the bolt head 11 being effected by shifting the pins 18 in the slots 17 to displace the bolt heads from the outer side 10 of the recess 8 to permit removal of the hook 7 from the recess. The form of keeper recess for the cable hook 7 i may be of the type above described in detail, or if desired open sides recesses 8, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 may be provided.
As shown in Fig. l, the cable 6 extending from the drum 1 aasses over a uide ulle 19 depending from the chassis A of the automobile continuing over the pulley 20 and 21 anchored as at 22 to the hook 23 associated with the pulley 20, the hook 23 being secured to the ground entering peg 2 1 while the pulley 21 carries a staple 25 for engagement with the hook 26 carried by the front end of the chassis A.
With the emergency draft appliance secured to the automobile as above described, and shown in Fig. 1, the wheel B is rotated, the cable 6 to be wound on the drum 1, and by the anchoring of thecable 6 to the peg -24: and the pulley connection between the cable and the hook 26 of the automobile chassis, the cable will be wound upon the drum and the automobile effectively removed ment oi my invention it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A draft attachment for automobiles, comprising a drum secured to the hub of the driving wheel, and including side flanges, one of said flanges having a recess therein opening at the periphery ofthe flange and a tensioned bolt closing the outer side of said recess. 1
2. A draft attachment for automobiles,
comprising a drum secured to the hub of 1 the driving wheel, and including side flanges, one of said flanges having a recess therein opening at the-periphery of the flange, said flange having a. peripheral groove therein at one side of said recess, a tensioned bolt pin positioned in said groove and a bolt head carried by said pin adapted to close the outer side of the flange recess.
3. A draft attachment for automobiles, comprising a drum secured to the hub of the driving wheel, and including, side flanges, one of said flanges having a recess therein opening at the periphery of the flange, said flange having a peripheral groove therein at one side of said recess, a tensioned bolt pin -positi0ned in said groove and a bolt head carried by said pin adapted to close the outer side of the flanged recess, the flange at opposite sides of said groove having elongated openings therein and operating pins carried by said bolt extending through said 0penings.
In testimony whereof I afiix' my signature.
MIKE SEPELYAK.
