Be it known that I, FRED MATHEws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the vcounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve-ments in Locks for Freight-Car Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to means for locking the rear edge of sliding doors and vparticularly to blind means in the rear vertical member of freight car door-'frames that are engaged by the sliding door therefor.
The object of myinvention is #to provide a locking fixture that is situatedv in the vertical member of the door-frame and is engaged by the inner surface of the door when the door is being closed and which locks the said rear edge of the same to thevertical member of the door-frame so that the door cannot be burglariously unlocked byllifting it over the guides upon which the door is supported and is adapted to slide. This I accomplish by means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointedout in the claims.

Referring to the drawings A represents the rear vertical edge of a door-frame, of a freight-car, and B represents the rear portion of a sliding door for closing the doorway, and both of these elements are vof the usual or of any preferred construction, whose upper edges are provided with hangers a, that have groovedv wheels, that travel on an overhead track or tram, (not sho-wn), and whose lower edge is held against the car and guided by guides o, of thei'isu-al construction. l
At a certain point above the sill of the door the outer angle or corner of the rear vertical member of the door-frame is cut away to form a suitable recess in which the frame of the lock is. inserted.y This frame, 3, consists, preferably, of a vertical U-shaped strip of metal, the ends, 4, ofthe parallel portions of which are flanged vertically and provided with screw or rivet holes 5,l by means of which it is secured in position with the parallel portions thereof horizontal. A vertical pivotal pin 6 isthrust through suitable openings in the parallel portions of the frame, 3, and its ends swaged orpheaded, and upon this pin the boss, 7, of t-he lock is loosely mounted. This lock consists of 'a somewhat L-shaped arm, 8, that projects from the upper portions of the boss, 7,'toward the door B, the inner surface `of which latter is adapted toengage the same, substantially as hereinafter explained. The lower edge 9, of the boss 7, commencing from the under edge of the arm 8 'extends downwards and is bevelled. `This bevelled portion terminates in a vertical shoulder 10, which, when the arm istat the lower limit of its vertical reciprocal movement, isadapted to engage shoulder, 11, of a stationary seat, 12, whose upper edges 13, is bevelled to correspond to the Ybevel 79 of the lower edge of the boss 7 of arm 8.
vThe counterpart forarm 8 of the lock is made by providing the inner surface of the door, near the rear vertical edge thereof,
with a recess 14, and providing a rectangular counter-plate 15, that covers thesame and is secured in place by rivets or bolts, 16,k tapped through the openings near vthe corners of` the counter-plate and into or through the door. The rear edge, 17 of the counterpla-te, 15, is bent inwards and enters the recess in the door, andsaid counter-plate is provided-with a rectangular opening 18, the edge of which farthest from edge 17, is provided with a tongue, 19, that is bei-veiled outwards into the recess, 14.
A coil expansion-spring 20, is placed upon the lpivotal pin 6, above the arm 8 and normally keeps the same depressed at they lowest limit of its vertical movement. so that, when the lower bevelled end of the boss ofarm 8 engages the correspondingly bevelled' edge the Varm 8 will occupy the .recess 14and bev under the rear edge of the opening. in the counter-plate, and when the dooryis locked lwill hold the rear edge of the door against Only'when arm 8 enters'the counter-plate and recess will spring 20 lpush -it downwards and rotate it so as to come in the locking position shown in Figure -1 of the drawings.
VVhat I claim as Anew is:
1. The combination with the frame of a doorway iand a lock secured in` a vertical member thereof, of a sliding door for closing the doorway and fa counterpart for said lock .in its inner sur-face out of which the lock is kept by said door when the ,latter is opened, andA `which interlocks therewith whenA the :door is closed.

3. The combi-nation with the frame vof a doorway, and a .lock secured in a vertical member thereof including` 'a laterally'oscillatory `L-shaped arm, of a sliding' door for closing'the doorway and having-a counterpart rin its inner surface out yof 'which the arm is `kept by the /door'when the latter is open, and `which interlocks therewith when the/door is closed.

9.
