N. W. MANROW REGISTER SUPPORT AND BORDER Filed Feb. 28 1923 -[nvawforx Patented July 24+, 1923.
bllT STATS REGISTER SUPPORT AND BORDER.
Application filed February 28, 1923.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN IV. MANnow, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of the city of Goshen, county of Elkhart, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Register Support and Border, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to registers used in connection with hot air furnaces, and particularly to the cold air register used in such a system.
An obj eet of the invention is to provide a bordered support for a cold air register placed within a. floor opening.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable support for a cold air register placed within a floor opening.
A third object of the invention is to provide a. cold air register support composed of four corner sections and four side and end rails in telescopic connection therewith.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cold air register support made wholly of sheet metal and composed of four corner sections and four side and end rails in telescopic relation therewith, said rails being provided with a border.
Other objects of the invention are mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating the application of the invention to an opening in a floor; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4tis an enlargement of a fragment of the device at one corner thereof in which a side and end rail are shown in telescopic relation with the corner piece, and in which a portion of one rail is broken away.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawing.
Referring to the details of the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates generally a floor which is provided with an opening 2 in which a cold air register 3 may be mounted, for the purpose well known in the art of hot air furnaces and heating systems in which such furnaces are used. The register 3 may be of any suitable type which is provided with a side and end supporting bar or rail 4:.
The register support proper comprises Serial No. 621,848.
four corner pieces 5, 5 and two end rails 6, 6 and two side rails 7, 7 all of which are preferably formed of sheet metal, as hereinafter described. The construction of the side and end rails is similar, and the corner pieces are all alike in design and construction, the latter being preferably made in L formation, the legs whereof are of uniform length. The side and end rails 7 and 6, respectively, are adapted to slidably telescope into the corner pieces 5, as hereinafter described, to enable adjustment of the device for application to various sizes of openings 2.
Inasmuch as all corner pieces are alike in construction a description of one applies to all, and the same applies to the side and end rails of the device.
A corner piece 5 is made from a single piece of sheet metal in L formation, and each leg thereof is provided on its under side with an inwardly bent clip 8 which is adapted to cooperate with an oppositely disposed clip 9 which is formed on the opposite side of the leg by outwardly bending a portion of the corner piece. Each of the corner piece clips 8 and 9 is spaced from the body portion 10 of the corner piece and the clip inner ends are spaced from each other to enable a side or end rail to telescope therein and into either or both legs thereof. The corner piece legs may be made any reasonable length to give a fair degree of telescopic adjustment of the side or end rail therein to enable the support to be fitted to various sizes of openings.
Each side or end rail is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprises the vertical web portion 11 having the integral right angular flange ledge '12 formed along the lower marginal edge thereof upon which ledge the register bar 4.- is adapted to rest. The upper margin of the side or end rail is made in T formation by inwardly bending the web to form right angular flange portion 1 1 thereon, and thereafter reversely bending the metal upon the top surface of flange 14; to form the outer border section 15. In thus constructing the side or end rail the web 11 is disposed vertically with the flange 14 disposed above the register bar 4: to prevent upward movement thereof, and with the border 15 overlying the floor 1.
As indicated in Figures 2, 3 and 1 the rails 6 and 7 telescope into the corner pieces 5 by engagement of the T head 13 of the rails within the spaced clips 8 and 9 of said corner pieces, in which relation the web 11 of the rail is disposed in snug engagement with one of said clips, preferably 9, and slidable therein, to enable longitudinal adjustment of the rail within said corner piece legs.
When the register is mounted in my improved support the outer edge of the register is concealed by the rail flange 14k and the floor edge, or interstice between the register and the wall of the opening 2, is effectually concealed by the outer marginal border 15 of the rail.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising four corner pieces and four side and end rails cooperating with said corner pieces to form a rectangular supporting frame, said rails being provided with a T shaped upper margin which has a telescopic connection with said corner pieces, and said rails being provided also with a lower marginal ledge.
2. A device of the character described, comprising four L shaped corner pieces and four side and end rails cooperating with said corner pieces to form a rectangular frame,
said rails being provided with a T shaped upper margin which has a telescopic connection with: said corner pieces, and said rails being provided also with a lower marginal ledge.
3. A device of the character described, comprising four L shaped corner pieces provided with integral clips, and four side and end rails adapted to cooperate with said corner pieces to form a rectangular frame, said rails being provided with a T shaped upper margin adapted to engage said corner pieces within said clips to efiect a telescopic connection therewith, and said rails being provided also with a lower marginal ledge adapted to support a register.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising corner pieces provided with integral clips, and side and end rails telescoping into said corner pieces and engaging the clips thereof, each of said rails being provided with a T shaped marginal head and a lower marginal ledge.
In witness whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature this 26th day of February, 1923.
NATHAN W. MANROW.
