Description
July 24, 11923. 31 41-62595 E. CULOTTA SPOT TRIMMING FOR DRESSES Filed Feb. 18 1922 is to Patented July 2 3, i923.
EDWARD C'UJLOTTA, QF RICHMOND HILL,
NEW YOFJJK.
SPOT TRIEMING JFQR DRESSES.
Application filed February 18, 1922. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CULo'r'rA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spot Trimmings for Dresses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
his invention relates to trimmings for ladies dresses, and has for its ob'ect to provide an improved and simplifie form of s ot trimming.
Miitallic spots are extensively'used for trimming, and have heretofore been made with dome shaped metal heads having spurs forfastening them to dress goods. The present invention contemplates making the heads of celluloid or other suitable plastic material, and mounting said heads on metallic backing plates having spurs for connecting to the dress goods.
A special object of the present invention provide simplified means for securing the plastic heads to the backing plates. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a plan view of a backing plate blank such as may be used in the manufacture of my improved spot trimming.
Figure 2 is an edge View of the same.
Figure 3 is a section thereof on the line III-HT of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a section of the backing plate after the plastic head has been attached thereto and the attaching spurs have been bent down.
Figure 5 is a pleted spot trimming.
Figure 6 is a side view of the spot attached to a piece of dress goods, the latter being shown in section, and
view of a modified Figure 7 is a plan hexagonal in form.
form of spot trimming The metallic backing plate 1 is preferably made round with an angular opening 2 therein and spurs 3 projecting from its edge.
side elevation ofv the com Said spurs are bent down, as shown in Figure 41 for passing through the dress goods 4, Figure 6, on which the may be clinched, as at 5, for securing tlie spot trimming thereto The head 6 of celluloid or other suitable plastic substance is molded on the backing plate 1 when warm and pliable, and in working the same to the desired shape for covering and fitting said plate, part of said substance passes through the opening 2 and is formed into a plate of flange 7 underlying the under surface of said backing plate, as
shown in Figure 4. The plastic head is thus securely fastened to the backing plate when the substance hardens, and the angular shape of the opening 2 serves to prevent said head from turning or twisting on said backing plate. Said opening 2 is preferably made square, as shown in Figure 1, but other angular shapes may be employed.
The shape of the spots may be varied as suggested in Figure 7 where a hexagonal spot is shown. It is obvious that many other shapes may also be made, such as diamonds, triangles, squares, rectangles, etc., as well as the round form shown in Figure 5. The headsmay also be colored to'suit difi'erent tastes and requirements.
I claim: a
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a backing late having an opening therein, of a head ot' plastic material covering said plate and having an integral portion extending through said,
opening and underlying said plate, and means for fastening said plate to dress goods.
2. In a device of the the combination with a an opening therein, of a head of plastic material mounted on said plate and having integral portion extending through said opening and underlying said plate for the purpose specified.
3 In a device of the character described, the combination with a backing plate having an angular opening therein, of a head of plastic material mounted on said plate and having an integral portion extending through and filling said opening, and an annular flange underlying said plate for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I name to this specification.
EDWARD CULOTTA.
