entire FRED B. DUES, 0F MINSTER, OHIO.
HUSKING ROLLS.
Application filed April 17, 1922.
T0 (522 whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Fans B. Dons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minster, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Husking Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
Thi invention relates to husking rolls for use in connection with corn husking machines, one of the objects of the invention being to provide rolls arranged in pairs and provided with novel arrangements of intersecting grooves whereby the walls of the grooves will properly engage the husks so as to tear them from the ears, the shape of the grooves being such that the fodder can pass between the rolls.
Another object is to provide rolls which will not crush the shelled corn resulting from the husking operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying orawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure l is a plan view of a husking roll constituting the present invention.
Figure 2 is another view thereof taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 8 is an end elevation of a pair of husking rolls, the same being shown moved apart.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a cylinder of the.
usual proportions, the same being mounted on a shaft 2 to which operating gears or the like may be keyed. Formed within the roll are longitudinal series of recesses or sockets 3 and diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves 4 are also formed in the roll. These grooves can be of any length desired, they being illustrated as extending along one end portion of the roll.
Formed in opposed portions of the roll between the grooves and one end of the roll Serial No. 553,474.
are grooves 5 arranged in units. Each unit comprises two intersecting grooves extending partly around the roll and disposed substantially at right angles to each other, the grooves being deepest at their points of in tersection and gradually diminishing in depth towarc their ends where they merge into the periphery of the roll. These intersecting grooves provide projecting corners or angles 6 where their walls intersect. Thus it will be seen that when a pair of husking rolls is in use, the rolls rotating in opposite directions respectively, an ear, when received between the rolls, will pre sent its husks to the grooves 5 and projections or angles 6. These parts on the co operating rolls will thus serve to remove the husks from the ears. The grooves 4 allow the husks to pass between the rolls and any corn shelled during the husking operation will be received in the grooves 4 and 5 and thus protected from crushing.
It will be noted that the inner walls 7 of the grooves a are flat and tangent to an imaginary cylinder concentric with the roll. This will be seen by referring to Figure 3. The rear or longitudinal wall 8 of each groove l is substantially radially disposed but merges along curved lines into the inner wall '7 of the groove. Thus this wall 8 acts as a means for engaging and pulling a husk.
What is claimed. is
1. A husking roll having intersecting obliquely disposed grooves providing angular projections between the walls thereof at their points of intersection, said intersecting grooves decreasin in depth from their centers toward their ends.
2. A husking roll having radial sockets, there being intersecting obliquely disposed grooves in the roll radiating from the sockets, the walls of the intersecting grooves forming angular projections at their points of intersection, said grooves decreasing in depth from the socket to their ends.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atlixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED B. DUES.
Witnesses:
J. J. Dons, JOHN G. Duns.
