SCOOP.
Application filed March so, 1921. Serial no. 457,161.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD C. DE J one, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wessington Springs, in the county of Jerauld and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shovels or scoops.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and efficient device of this character especially designed for use in garages which obviously may be used for other purposes.
Another object is to so construct an implement of this character that it requires a minimum quantity of metal to make the blade and in which the blade is so connected with the handle that maximum strength and durability is obtained in combination with simplicity and quick and easy assembly of the parts.
Another object is to provide an implement of this character composed of two parts only the handle and the blade which are united without the use of ferrules or other complementary parts and which preserves the desired rigidity and strain resisting qualities necessary for such a connection.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an implement constructed in accordance with this invention, and v Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof with the handle broken off for convenience in illustration.
In the embodimentillustrated, the scoop constituting this invention is composed of a blade 1 constructed of sheet steel or other suitable strain resisting material and stamped in the form shown in Fig. 1 having a rectilinear sharp scraping edge 2 at the front thereof, the remainder of its perimeter being provided with an upstanding flange 3 having a rolled edge to form a reinforcing bead and transversely slit at the rear of the blade midway the width of said blade and having outturned end members 5 designed to receive between them the handle 6 and to be riveted or otherwise secured to the to scoop up grease and dirt, butopposed side faces M thereof, as is shown clearly in Fig. 1. v c p Blade 1 preferably has its "rear edges diverging toward the midlength thereof, as is shown in Fig. 1, the side portions being parallel the end members 5 of the flanges being arranged at opposite sides of the apex of said converging rear edges, and the front end of the flanges slanted as shown.
A handle 5 composed of any suitable material, preferably of wood, has its front end inserted between the ears or lugs and rigidly secured to the blade by bolting or otherwise. The front end of the handle extends over and straddles about one-third of the width more or less of the blade 1 and by fixedly securing the ends 5 of the flanges to the opposed side faces of said handle a rigid, strong connection between the handle and the blade will be effected, and one which may be quickly and easily assembled having all the durability and strain resisting qualities of a connection employing a ferrule or other auxiliary securing means. I
From the above description it will be obvious that a scoop constructed as herein shown and described is very simple and cheap to manufacture, and yet will be strong and durable.
While this scoop is primarily designed for use in scraping up grease, dirt and the like from the floors of garages, it obviously may be used for any other purpose which requires the use of a scoop.
The preferred embodiment of the-invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification. but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of. the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim is:
1. An implement of the class described comprising a blade having a rectilinear sharpened front edge and parallel side walls with the edge of the rear portion of the blade converging toward the midwidth thereof, an upstanding flange around said side edges and rear edge with a break at the apex of the rear edge and provided at said point with laterally spaced outturned handle engaging ears, and a handle to engage the rear end of the blade, said handle being located between said ears and fixedly secured thereto and to the body of the blade.
with the edge of the rear portion of the blade converging toward the midwidth thereof, an upstanding flange around said side edges and rear edge with a break at the 5 apex of the rear edge and provided at said i point with laterally spaced outturned handle engaging ears, and a handle to engage the rear end of the blade, said handle being located between said ears and fixedly secured thereto and to the body of the blade, the handle being elongated lengthwise of the blade and provided With securing devices extending through the handle and theblade in front of the upstanding'flange around the side edges and rear edge and said laterally spaced outturned handle engaging ears be ing secured to the handle by fastening devices traversing them.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature hereto.
