Description

c, s. CLARKE cAsING- HEAD iled May 26, 1921 ATTORNEY To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Cum S. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casing Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in casing heads for use in connection with oil wells.
An important object of the invention is the provision of hand gripping means to at tach to the upper face of well tube gripping segments.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel form of slips for holding pipe suspended within the well, the particular formation and arrangement of the slips providing a 'gri which engages approximately' two-thir s of the circumference of the pipe and thus provides positive means for preventing the pipe from slipping downward.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the slips engage the pipe in a manner to provide a uniform pressure and thus prevent crushing or injury to the pipe, certain of the slips providing a back up grip which engages that portion of the pipes circumference, or the remaining one-third not engaged by slips above mentioned.
A further object is the provision of a casing head in which the relative size of the bore and the size of each individual slip is such as to prevent the latter from dropping through the head and thus guards against loss and possible serious injury to the well;
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional' view showing a casing head and pipe shown in connection therewith.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 3 isa detail perspective view of the slip used for preventing rotary movement of the pipe.

Application filed May 26, 1921. Serial No. 472,763.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a slipv as threadedly mounted upon the upper end of a well casing 11. The head is provided with oppositely arranged openings 12, while its bore is flared upwardly and outwardly to provide an inclined surface 13, the lower end of this inclined surface forms the most restricted portion of the bore of the head and the diameter of this portion is preferably greater than the bore of the casing 11. This is an important feature in casing head construction, in that it permits the introduction of oil well fishing tools and other equipment within'the casing, without removing the head. At its upper end the hea is formed with an enlarged bore 14.
For the purpose of temporarily holding the pipe which is indicated at 21, in position, there is associated with the head,
changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as propand adapted to clamp a well tube therebetween, alined upstanding ears carried by one pair of the gripping elements, a U- shaped member having its ends pivotally connected with the ears, an upstanding ear carried by the remaining gripping segment,
and a finger engaging loop carried thereby.
3. The combination with a well casing head having a tapered bore, of a plurality of tapered well tube gripping segments received in the bore, a member pivotally connected with the upper faces of a plurality of segments, and a loop pivotally connected with the upper face of another segment.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CLEM S. CLARKE.
