INVEN TOR.

PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. MOLLENBERG, OF HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
DRILL-PIPE SLIP.
Application filed March 17, 1923. Serial No. 625,797.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W'. MoLLnN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Beach, in the county of Orange and State of California, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Pipe Slips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drill-pipe slips to suspend drill-pipe and casing in deep wells, and the objets are, first, to provide a slip that may be sharpened without cutting new teeth in the same, and second, to
provide a slip with inserted teeth that may be removed to be sharpened or replaced by new teeth.
Further objects are to provide teeth for drill-pipe slips that are simple in construction and easy to insert.
A still further object is to provide single teeth that may be removed individually to be resharpened or replaced by new teeth.
I attain these objects by the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional view on line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 represents a part plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents an inside elevation of the drill-pipe slip.
Figure 4 represents a plan view of Fi ure 3.
Figure 5 rep-resents a sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 represents an enlarged sectional view of the teeth in Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the drill-pipe 1 is of a standard type as used in drilling oil wells and the like, and the slips 2 are fitted in sections around the outside diameter of the said drillpipe 1, the spiders 3 are secured in the turntable 4.- and hold the said slips 2, and the turntable -i is operatively mounted on a bed plate 9, and the gear-teeth 10 are meshed into a piniongear and power transmission means, not shown.
The teeth 5 are inclined outwardly from the bevel-sockets 11 up to the bevel-edges 7 with parallel inner and outer faces 12 and 13 respectively, the bevel-edges 7 are formed on the upper-outer ends of the said teeth 5 adjacent to the drill-pipe 1, and the bevelsockets 11 are formed on the lower-inner ends of the teeth 5 in the said slips 2, the flanges 14 are formed on the two outer-end portions of the teeth 5 and are fitted into grooves 15 and the said grooves 15 are formed in the said slips 2, and the clamps 6 are secured to the two ends of the slips 2 over the said flanges 141.
The slips 2 are employed when it is desired to suspend the drill-pipe l in the vvell when it is necessary to connect or disconnect the joint on the top end thereof to another length of drill-pipe 1, and is accomplished by lowering the said slips 2 between the spiders 8 and the said drill-pipe 1, as the same is being suspended from an overhead rig the weight of the suspended drillpipe 1 is transferred to the slips 2 and causes the bevel-edges 7 in the teeth 5 to close in on the said drill-pipe 1 by wedging (10m in the spiders 3, and the said teeth 5 are in turn held into position by the downward pressure of the suspended drill-pipe 1 by hearing into the bevel-sockets 11.
When it is desired to sharpen the beveledges 7 on the teeth 5, the clamps 6 are released from the slips 2 and the flanges 14 are then freed from the grooves 15 after the said slips 2 are removed from the spiders 3, or the broken or worn out teeth 5 may be replaced by new teeth 5 without loosening the remaining slip members.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A set of drill-pipe slips of the class described, comprising a set of sockets positioned in the said drill-pipe slips; grooves positioned in the sides of the respective drillpipe slips; individual teeth sections, adapted to be inserted in the said sockets; flanges formed on the end portions of the said teeth, adapted to fit into the said grooves; a clamping means, adapted to hold the said flanges in the said grooves, as set forth.
2. A set of drillpipe slips of the class described, comprising a set of individual teeth members, adapted to be inserted in the inner portion of the said drill-pipe slips and to fit around a drill-pipe; a clamping means, adapted to hold the said set of teeth a set of individual teeth members, adaptin the said drill-pipe slips; as set forth. ed to fit in the said grooves; bevel-edges 3. A set of drill-pipe slips of the class formed on the u per-outer portion of the 10 described, adapted to suspend a drill-pipe said teeth, as set orth.- 5 vertically in a well; in .comb'naition with e I testimony whereof I gifliggmy signature.
