To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN States of Amen- September 2, i921.
BRITTEN,
in the county of New Jersey, have made a certain new and useful invention in Carry-Set Mechanism chines; and I declare full, clear, and same, such enact for Calculatingldlathe following to he a description of the as will enable othei's skilled in the art to which it appertains to make use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to.
figures oi reiei enoe marked letters or theceon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 mechine embodying the inven is e plan view of a calculating;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Figgore o oi? the cent arts of the machine. Figure carry-set member the pivoted tooth.
The invention has relation to cart; mechanism for use in celcdlatin" chines employing a delayed carry 0 ting tens, having for its ohject is an enlarged deta" pivoted corny-set menisci,
is detail plea end its spi Figure 5 is e detail iieg ne side view with ad- ,1 view 01 37 view e revision of means for this purpose which may he adjusted with a minimum of retaining complete accuracy The invention consists in diction, While of operation,
the novel construction and combinations o1" posts, as here inaftei" set forth.
The accompanying drawings invention as applied to a in accordance with the disclost pending application Serial No. Which-the present application is upon the shaft of the selecting or gears llhese goats 5 one of two, each set selectively series of digital keys and 75 is a swollen 80, me h mg with a similar seat 81 e of my co 426943, of a division. carol 23 nep e die, adapted to 1 oi: equivalent .Q,' i the shalt and loomed llglfliy primary nged in sets l Divided and this application fled enial 2%. 497,863.
bars, as explained in the reissue patent to Baldwin, No. 13,841, the teeth of each set being arranged in approximately a halfcircle, so that the gears 5 may mesh with intermediate gears 12 during approximately a half-rotation of shaft 1-, the other half rotation of said shaft being idle. The gears 12 mesh with operate the gears of the numeral Wheels 13,
Gear M is fast upon shaft 73, to which annuli m are also rigidly attached, these ennuli serving to support laterally movable canying teeth 5 arranged in two oppositely pitched spirals each extending approxh mately one-fourth around shaft 73, a tooth of each spiral series being adapted to engage its respective intermediate gem: l2,
App oximately first quarter rotation sh it 7 ing teeth idly past the gears 12, and corresponds to a portion of the idle movement of shaft 4-. The next hali rotation of shaft F3 is also idle, and corresponds to the active or setting-1 a movement of shaft Q. The final quarto; rotation shaft 2 3 brings teeth 9' of the second series successively into position to act noon the intermediate l2 infuse 0L late; cl positioning of the y oy tneii' carrying cams 21; this movement of shaft 73 comes nding to the remainine' idle movement shaft 4;, completine" cycle. a
Reverse or subtractive i'otation of the operating handle 8 ill result in the same sequence of movements described for forward or additive rotation, except that the said host or idle series of carrying" teeth 5 will now operate, and the second or othe? series Will not act.
Pivotal cerry-settine arms ll, having carry canis 21, are employed, each arm being provided with a cam extension 16, forming part of a eivoted too h or element 16, pivoted st 16' to said moral wheels engeoe the teeth 16 as said Wheels pass forward y to or reverselyisom zero registering position, to actuate the top of said ai'ni, hit
3 serves carry one series of can Pins 9 the 1111- vent incorrect carry operation by excess movement or over-rotation of the numeral wheels under momentum. This pivotal movement of an arm 14 serves to bring its carry cam 21 into the path of movement of a tooth 7', whereby said tooth will be moved laterally into position to engage and actuate the gear 12 of higher order.
During subtractive or reverse rotation of the parts, a roller 25 upon the annulus m engages one wall of a double cam extension 25 of any arm 14 which may have been depressed, to restore the arm to normal position after the tooth 7' has acted; while durin additive or forward rotation the tooth j itself engages the opposite wall of cam extension t after said tooth has been acted upon by cam 21, and will restore the arm 14 to normal position.
' shaft 15, and
The teeth 16 have a movement approximately radial of the numeral wheels in the pivotal movement of the arms 14, so that the camming action of the pins 9' will be similar in forward or reverse rotation of the numeral wheels. The carry cams 21 lie in a plane radial of the pivot shaft 15, and in operative position will be substantially tangent to the path of movement of the teeth j, in order that the thrust of the teeth 55 upon either cam surface of the member 21 may be resisted by said shaft and no tendency to displacement of the arm 14 occur. In order to attain these relations of movement and position in the limited space between the wheels 13, the intermediate gear shaft 11 and the carry teeth j, the shafts 60, 11, 73 and 15 are placed in quadrangular relation, the shafts 11 and 15 thus lying upon opposite sides of a plane intersecting the shafts 60 and 73.
For the purpose of holding the pivotal arms 14 yieldably in either position of adjustment, U-form springs 18 have respectively one arm thereof pivotally engaging in permanent fixed manner a seat 17 of the shaft 11 and the other arm thereof pivotally engaging in permanent manner a seat 19 of the related arm 14, the latter in its movement from one angular position of adjustment to the other moving the sprlng and the seat 19 into and past alignment with the arm 14, the seat 17 and the thereby compressing the arms of sald spring and tensioning the same, the thrust of the spring aiding to complete the movement of the arm 14 and the latter bemg adapted to contact with the shaft 11 to limit the movement in either direction. In the movement of the arm 14 from one angular position of adjustment to the other, the spring 18, which in its first position is an larly related to the arm 14 at one side 0 a line cennecting the center of shaft 15 with the seat 19, is moved to another angularly related position with said naeaoeo arm at the other side of said line. It is therefore obvious that the spring 18 will in either angular position of adjustment resist movement of the arm 14.
I claim:

In a calculating machine, numeral wheels rotatable in either of two directions, carry mechanism including driving elements, and reciprocatory pivoted arms operable by said numeral wheels and adapted to -move said elements from inactive to active position, said arms having each a pivoted tooth engaged by said wheels and g being thereby adapted to allow excess movement of said numeral wheels when suddenly checked without depression of the arms.
