The invention relates to cash registers, accounting and the like machines having at least one row of interspersed totalizers cooperating with a common differential mechanism, of which totalizers preferably one is a multiple item totalizer, and another a grand totalizer, and more particularly to the selection and the engagement of several totalizers, including the multiple item totalizer and the grand totalizer, during the same amount entering machine operation.
Thus the main object of the invention is to enable simultaneous engagement of several totalizers of the same row during a machine operation.
Another object of the invention is to adapt the differential mechanism for such simultaneous engagement of several totalizers.
Still another object of the invention is to adapt the totalizer selection and engagement control means for such simultaneous engagement of several totalizers during amount entering.
Another object of the invention is to provide totalizer selecting means which enable optional selection of one or several totalizers of a row at a time for and during a machine operation.
Another object of the invention is to providefor tens carrying in a machine operation with one or several totalizers of a row engaged.
Another object of the invention is to adapt a tens carrying device to cooperate as well with one as with several totalizers of a row engaged.
Further objects of the invention will be pointed out in the following detailed description with reference to the annexed drawings.
A preferred form of an embodiment of the invention is shown in the annexed drawings.

Fig. 13 shows the same device after tens carrying is performed.
Fig. 14 shows a portion of the tens carrying 5 device after being restored.
The illustrative machine is equipped with the invented device and has two totalizers, viz: a grand totalizer accumulating all amounts entered into the machine and a sub-totalizer, or multipleitem accumulator, which, upon depression of a multiple-item key, can optionally be brought into engagement for accumulating any series of items of a multiple-item transaction. Heretofore, such totalizers were mounted on different shafts due to the fact that, in case of necessity, they had to be operated commonly, but according to the present invention, they are located in one and the same totalizer row, the adding wheels thereof being mounted one close to another by denominational orders.
The amount differentials I 0, of each denominational order, are moved during each operation of the machine, first in counter-clockwise direction and then in clockwise direction a distance depending on the amount being entered. Each differential I0 is permanently engaged with a gear II (Fig. 1). Each gear II is rigidly connected to a gear II of same diameter by means of a hub (Fig. 2) At each side of each pair of gears II, II, there are provided angular levers I2, I2 pivotally mounted on shaft I3. The levers are fast on hubs supported on shaft I3, said hubs extending into the hub of the pairs of gears II, II. The levers are normally held in a set posi- 5 tion by a mechanism to be described hereinafter. Intermediate wheels I5, I5 are supported by pins I4, I4 of the angular levers I2, I2 respectively (Figs. 1 and 2). The intermediate wheels I5, I5 are constantly in mesh with gears I I, I I respectively, so that the movements of the difierential member ID of any denominational order are uniformly transmitted to the appropriate intermediate wheels I5, I5. Further, the intermediate wheels I5, I5, with the difierential members I0, and II, II remaining stationary, are capable of performing a movement the same as planetary wheels, the said movement being transmitted to shafts I4, I4 by means of tens carrying levers and intermediate levers I2, I2 as will be described later on. If tens carrying is done directly on the adding wheels, instead of through the wheels I5, I5, the sets of wheels I5, I5 may be omitted and a roll extending through the width of the adding wheels may be provided. This roll is an expedient means for use between overflow wheels of the totalizers. Adding wheels l6 and I6 of the grand totalizer and the multiple-item totalizer, respectively, are mounted opposite the intermediate wheels l5 and I5, each adding wheel l6 facing an intermediate wheel and each wheel l5 a wheel 55. The adding wheels l6, l5 are pivotally carried by studs I? and ll of rock levers.
I8 and H3 respectively. All the rock levers l8, l8 are alternately mounted on .a common shaft 20. The said levers are pivotally mounted on shaft 25 (Figs. 1, 3) and are retained against lateral shifting movement thereon. The levers are normally held, in a manner described hereinafter in detail, so positioned that the adding wheels it, it are out of mesh with the intermediate wheels l5, l5.
Shaft 2| slidably mounted in the side frames of the machine has fastened thereto coupling arms 22 (Figs. 1, 3) in number one more than denominational orders are provided. Interspersed with these coupling arms 22, there is provided, loosely mounted on shaft 2 I, a series of locking levers 23, no space being left between the said levers and the arms. The levers 23 have downwardly extending arms straddling a stationary shaft 24. The locking levers are, accordingly, shifted together with the shaft 2| and locking arms 22,
but are locked by shaft 24 against rotation about shaft 2|. The other arms of the locking levers 23 lie, with the machine in rest, flush in the same plane as the coupling arms 22, so that the forked ends of the coupling and locking arms 22, 23 form an uninterrupted straight guiding groove. The latter is engaged by the rounded off ends of the arms of the rock levers l8, l3 whereby the adding wheels l5, l6 are prevented from meshing with the intermediate wheels |5,. Hi. The shaft 20 carries locking pawls 25, 96, each thereof located aside of one of the rock levers l8, l8, the said locking pawls having noses entering the opposed gaps between the teeth of the adding wheels H5, H5 to lock the said wheels. Upon rocking the rock levers l8, H3 in counter-clockwise direction, in a manner described hereinafter in detail, a stop bar 98 carried by the framework of the machine prevents the locking pawls 95, from taking part in this rocking movement so that their locking noses release the adding wheels I6, l6 after they have been engaged with the intermediate wheels l5, if).
The shaft 2| carries a sleeve 28 unshiftably mounted between two spacing collars (Figs. 3 and 4), the said sleeve having secured thereto an arm 29 with a forked end straddling across shaft 30, whereby said sleeve is prevented from rotation. The sleeve 23 has fastened thereto a roller 3| traveling in the circumferential cam groove 32a of a drum 32 which is pivotally but unshiftably mounted on shaft 30. The said drum has fixed thereto a bevel gear 33 meshing with a rotating bevel gear 34 on a pivot 35 fast to shaft 30. The rotating bevel gear 34 meshes also with a bevel gear 35 loosely mounted on shaft 3|) and rigidly connected to a gear sector 31. The latter meshes with the internal gear of a gear element 33 fast to shaft 39 (Figs. 4 and 5). The shaft 39 carries also an arm 4|a, connected by means of a link 4|! to a moving slide 4! pivoted on the motor key bank. The motor key bank comprises three keys 52, 43, 44 for Adding, Read and Reset, th said keys having pins cooperating with slide 45 in such a manner that the latter is not moved when the Add key is depressed, but shifted downward to an equal extent when either total-taking key 43, 44 is depressed and the bevel gear 35 is rotated by the gear sector 31, both of said elements being moved through equal angles in both cases. If at this time the bevel gear 34 is prevented from rotating about shaft 30, the drum 32 is rotated through an angle of the same degree as gear 35. Further, the shaft 30 carries a gear sector 46 meshing with the gear sector 41 loosely mounted on shaft 39 (Figs. 4 and 6) Sector 41 is connected by means of a link 48 to a. slide 49 associated with the key bank comprising the multiple-item key to serving as a means for engaging the multiple-item totalizer. The pin of the multiple-item key cooperates with an inclined surface of the slide 49 in such a manner that the latter is moved downward upon depressing the multiple-item. key, at which time the sector 41 is rocked in counterclockwise dire'ction. The sector 45 transmits this motion of the sector 4'! to the shaft 35 whereby the bevel wheel 34 is given a rotating movement through a certain angle. With the bevel wheel 35 remaining stationary this rotating motion causes the drum 32 to rotate in the same direction of rotation but through an angle twice as great as that of bevel wheel 34. Depression of either total-taking motor key 43 or 44, as well as the multiple-item key 53, through gears 33, 34, and 35, rotates the drum 32 three steps.
The cam groove 32a, is so shaped that, with the machine in rest, that is, if either total key 43, 44 or the multiple-item key 56 have not been depressed, the coupling arms 22 fast on shaft 26 embrace the rock levers l8 carrying the adding Wheels I6 of the grand totalizer, while the rock levers l8, carrying the adding wheels I6 of the multiple-item totalizer, are held by the stationary locking arms 23 as shown in Fig. 3.
The shaft 2| carries an arm 54 (Fig. 10) rigidly mounted thereon, but in such a way it is not compelled to take part in the lateral movements of the shaft 2|, the said arm 54 being connected to one arm of a coupling lever 51. The coupling lever 51 is pivoted on the middle shaft 58 of the machine and carries three coupling pawls 6| 6|, 62, each one thereof being connected by means of a slot and pin connection to a motor key 43, 42, 44 in such a way that upon depressing the respective motor key, the respective pawl is rocked inwardly. A stud 63 of the motor key bank (Figs. 10, 11) supports a mode of operation cam disk 61 with a cam groove 61a, and a stud 64 supports a twin mode of operation cam disk 65, 66 with a cam groove 65a on the right-hand side, and a cam groove 66a on the left hand side. Each mode of operation control cam disk 55, 56, 8'5 is provided with teeth to mesh with a gear 68 whereby the said disk is given a full revolution during a machine operation. The cam grooves 55a, 66a, 67a of these disks are each engaged by a roller 10a. of a pitman if). The pitmans are bifurcated at one end to straddle and be guided by the respective studs 63, 64, and have their other ends linked to the arms of the related angular levers 1| I2, 13. The latter are pivoted on studs T4 of the motor key bank and are provided with pins Hal, 12a, and 13a respectively, normally opposite the recesses of the appropriate coupling pawls 60, 6|, 62 respectively. The cam grooves 65a, 66a, 61a are so shaped that upon rotation of the cam groove disks, said grooves cause their respective angular levers l I, 72, 3 to rock first in clockwise direction and then in counter-clockwise direction. The cam grooves of the individual disks 65, 66, 61, however, are arranged relatively to one another, so that rocking the angular levers is timed in accordance with the operations of the machine.
By depressing any motor key 42, 43, 44 the respe'ctive pawl 60, 6|, or 62 is engaged with the pin Ha, 12a, 13w of the respective angular lever 'll, 12, or 13 respectively, whereby the coupling lever 51 is coupled with the respective mode of operation disk 85, 66, or 61 and is rocked first in clockwise and then in counter-clockwise direction upon operation of the machine at the times determined thereby.
The rocking movement of the coupling lever 51 is transmitted to the coupling shaft 2| by means of the pulling rod 55 and the arm 54 whereby the coupling arms 22 of the said shaft swing the rock arms I8, l8, engaged with said arms at the time, in such a way that the selected adding wheels l6, l6 are moved into engagement with the intermediate wheels l5, l5. According to Whether the coupling arms 22 embrace the one only, or both the groups of rock arms I 8, l 8, the one totalizer only, or both totalizers are coupled with the intermediate wheels I5, l5 and with the differential members 10 respectively.
As the two totalizers of this row contain different totals, it may occur, when both the totalizers are operated simultaneously, that in some donominationai orders the adding Wheel of the one totalizer passes from "9 to "0, while the adding wheel of the other totalizer does not do so. For this reason, two tens transfer mechanisms, operating simnultaneously, are provided, as will now be described.
Each adding wheel N5 of the grand totalizer has closely arranged thereto a disk with a tens carrying tooth 75 (Figs. 1 and 2) capable of cooperating with tooth 16 of a tens carrying pinion 11' when the adding wheel passes from 9 to 0. The tens carrying pinion 11 is pivoted on a stationary shaft 18 and is provided with a laterally extending pin 19 engaging a recess 8| of a rock lever 82. The bail shaped rock lever 82 is mount ed on shaft 88 and its other arm 84 carries a pin 85' engaging the forked end of the angular lever 12 of the next higher denominational order. The opening 8|, cooperating with the shaft 18 and the pin I9 of the tens carrying pinion, is so shaped that the lever 82 cannot be rocked with the pinion T! in rest position shown in Figs. 1 and 1a. Thereby also the angular lever 12 carrying the intermediate wheel 15 of the next higher denominational order, is held in its rest position. Now it, while an amount is entered, an adding wheel l6 of the engaged totalizer passes from 9 to 0, the tens carrying tooth 15 rotates the tens carrying pinion 11 in counter-clockwise direction (Fig. 12) by 45 degrees, during which rotation the pin 19 is sweeping along a surface, concentric with shaft 18, of the opening 8| without rocking out the lever 82. At this time the tooth 92 of the tens carrying pinion comes into the path of the teeth 88, 89 of a stepped disk 81 secured to a shaft 85 which is oscillatorily driven. After the tens carrying has been prepared, the shaft 86 is given a part rotation in clockwise direction, at which time the two teeth 88, 89 of the stepped disk 81, secured to this shaft, rotate the pinion Ti in counter-clockwise direction by 90 degrees. At this time the pin 19 rocks the lever 82 in clockwise direction, the latter rocking, in its turn, the angular lever l2 in counter-clockwise direction whereby the intermediate wheel l5 like a planetary wheel rolls down the gear II, which is held stationary at this time, and advances by one unit the adding wheel l6 of next higher denominational order (Fig. 13). Thereupon the locking disk 94 passes beneath the wide tooth 85 of the tens carrying pinion locking it against rotation in clockwise direction. After the tens carrying has been completed, the totalizer becomes disengaged and the shaft 86 is turned back in counter-clockwise direction beyond its initial position (Fig. 14). At this time the teeth 88, 89 of the stepped disk 81 turn back the tens carrying pinion 11 by 90 degrees, and the tooth 90 of a reversing disk 9| causes a further back rotation by 45 degrees, so that the tens carrying pinion l1 regains its initial position. At this time the pin 18 rocks the lever 82 back, whereby also the planetary wheel carrier I2 with the planetary wheel I5 is restored. Thereupon the shaft 86 is turned back in clockwise direction to initial position, so that the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, however, both totalizers being disengaged.
The other totalizer 16' of this row is provided with like tens carrying elements referred to by the same reference numerals with prime marks added thereto. In order to effect tens carrying from any denominational order of the one totalizer to the next higher order of the same totalizer, in spite of the fact that an order of the other totalizer is lying in between two denominational orders of the other totalizers, the bails 83 and 83 of the rock levers 82 and 82' are alternated, so that none thereof hampers the movement of the other lever (Figs. 1 and 2).
The operation of the device described is as follows:-
(1) During an adding operation of the machine for entering a single item, the adding motor key 42 is depressed, but not the multiple-item key 50. Due thereto, the cam groove drum 32 is not rotated and, in connection therewith, the coupling shaft 2| is not shifted laterally from its rest position (Fig. 3). At this time the coupling arms 22 engage the rock arms 18 carrying the adding wheels I6 of the grand totalizer, while the rock arms 18 of the multiple-item totalizer 16 remain connected to the locking arms 23, and the locking pawls 85, 96 hold the adding wheels l6, l6 against unintentional rotation. Upon depression of the adding motor key 42, by engaging the coupling pawl 60 (Fig. 10) the coupling lever 5'! is connected with the cam groove disk 65 for adding which, now, rocks clockwisely the shaft 2| before the amount differential elements 10 are restored, and thereby rocks the swing levers l8 embraced by the coupling arms 22, so that the adding wheels [6 of the grand totalizer are engaged with the pertinent intermediate wheels 15 during the restoration of the amount differential means 18 (Fig. 1). If, during the entry of an amount, some adding wheels l6 pass from 9 to 0, the tens carrying pinion T7 is rocked 45 degrees in counter-clockwise direction (Fig. 12). Thereby the first tooth 82 of the tens carrying pinion comes into the path of the teeth 88, 89 of the stepped disk 8?, so that upon the subsequent clockwise rotation of shaft 86, the pinion TI is rotated further in counter-clockwise direction by 90 degrees by means of these teeth (Fig. 13). When this occurs, the lateral extending pin 19 of the pinion 'l'! rocks the bail-shaped lever 82 in clockwise direction and thereby the planetary wheel carrier l2 of next higher denominational order in counter-clockwise direction. During this movement, the intermediate wheel I5, acting as a planetary wheel, rolls down the gear H, the latter being stationary at this time, and
causes thereby the respective adding wheel Hi to be advanced by one unit. The rotation of the shaft 2| by the cam groove 65a (Figs. 10, 11) causes the grand totalizer to be disengaged. It is not necessary to restore shaft 2| since it was not moved out of its normal position during this machine operation. After the tens carrying elements have been restored to normal positions when the teeth 88, 89, and 9!! become operative while the shaft 86 is turned back by the disks 81 and 9! (Fig. 14), all the parts are again in normal positions.
(2) For entering an amount of a multipleitem transaction, the grand totalizer as well as the multiple-item totalizer 16' has to be operated and, therefore, the multiple-item key 50 and the adding key 42 are depressed. By depressing the multiple-item key 5!] the cam groove drum 32 (Fig. 3) is turned two steps and the shaft 2! is moved accordingly two steps to the left, which causes the coupling arms E2 to embrace the swing arms l8, l8 of both totalizers (Fig. 8). Depressing the adding motor key 42 causes the coupling lever 51 to be connected with the mode of operation disk 65, so that the adding wheels l6, l6 of the two selected totalizers are disengaged from the intermediate Wheels i5, i5 during the restoration of the amount differential elements If). If, during entry of an amount one adding wheel IE, it of each totalizer passes from 9 to each of the tens carrying actions prepared thereby is transferred to the adding wheels l6, iii of next higher denominational order of the respective totalizer by means of either tens carrying mechanism operating separately from the other. After the two totalizers have again been disengaged by shaft 2!, the said shaft and the tens carrying elements are restored to normal.
(3) To take a sub-total, or total from the grand totalizer IE, only the respective total taking key 43 or 44 has to be depressed, whereby the shaft 2| is shifted by one unit to the left, in which position its coupling arms 22 embrace the rock levers l8 (Fig. '7). Upon depression of either total-taking key 43 or 44, the coupling lever 5'? is coupled with the respective mode of operation cam disk 66 or 6'! (Fig. 10), so that the shaft 2! with its coupling arms 22 is rocked out before the differential elements iii are set, and the adding wheels E6 of the grand totalizer are brought into mesh with the intermediate wheels (Fig. 1). The adding wheels l6 are rotated in a direction reverse to the additive direction by the differentials l0 until the tens teeth 15, engaging the tens teeth iii of the pinions 11, arrest the adding wheels IS in their zero positions. In connection therewith, the grand totalizer is disengaged after the differential elements have either been set or restored to normal positions according to whether key 43 or key 44 has been depressed.
(4) To reset the multiple-item totalizer It, the motor key 44, and in addition, the multiple-item key 50 have to be depressed, whereby the cam groove 32 is caused to rotate and, in connection therewith, the coupling shaft 2! is shifted three steps (Fig. 9). At this time the coupling arms 22 engage only the rock arms l8 efiecting, when the shaft H is rotated, the engagement between the adding wheels it" of the multiple-item totalizer and the intermediate wheels l5 and the differential elements Ill respectively. As, upon depressing the motor key 44, the lever 51 is connected with the mode of operation disk 61, the
multiple-item totalizer, after being reset, is disengaged by the shaft 21 when being turned back.
