The teeth 16 have a movement approximately radial of the numeral wheels in the pivotal movement of the arms 14, so that the camming action of the pins 9' will be similar in forward or reverse rotation of the numeral wheels. The carry cams 21 lie in a plane radial of the pivot shaft 15, and in operative position will be substantially tangent to the path of movement of the teeth j, in order that the thrust of the teeth 55 upon either cam surface of the member 21 may be resisted by said shaft and no tendency to displacement of the arm 14 occur. In order to attain these relations of movement and position in the limited space between the wheels 13, the intermediate gear shaft 11 and the carry teeth j, the shafts 60, 11, 73 and 15 are placed in quadrangular relation, the shafts 11 and 15 thus lying upon opposite sides of a plane intersecting the shafts 60 and 73.
For the purpose of holding the pivotal arms 14 yieldably in either position of adjustment, U-form springs 18 have respectively one arm thereof pivotally engaging in permanent fixed manner a seat 17 of the shaft 11 and the other arm thereof pivotally engaging in permanent manner a seat 19 of the related arm 14, the latter in its movement from one angular position of adjustment to the other moving the sprlng and the seat 19 into and past alignment with the arm 14, the seat 17 and the thereby compressing the arms of sald spring and tensioning the same, the thrust of the spring aiding to complete the movement of the arm 14 and the latter bemg adapted to contact with the shaft 11 to limit the movement in either direction. In the movement of the arm 14 from one angular position of adjustment to the other, the spring 18, which in its first position is an larly related to the arm 14 at one side 0 a line cennecting the center of shaft 15 with the seat 19, is moved to another angularly related position with said naeaoeo arm at the other side of said line. It is therefore obvious that the spring 18 will in either angular position of adjustment resist movement of the arm 14.
I claim:
1. In a calculating machine, numeral wheels rotatable in either of two directions, carry mechanism including driving elements, and reciprocatory pivoted arms operable by said numeral wheels and adapted to -move said elements from inactive to active position, said arms having each a pivoted tooth engaged by said wheels and g being thereby adapted to allow excess movement of said numeral wheels when suddenly checked without depression of the arms.
2. In a calculating machine, numeral wheels rotatable in either of two directions, and carry mechanism similarly rotatable and including rotary driving elements and reciprocatory pivoted arms operable by said numeral wheels and adapted to move said elements from inactive to active position, said arms having each a double-beveled pivoted tooth having a limited movement pivotally in either direction and operable by the numeral wheel at the end of the movement of the tooth in either direction, said 4, arms being thereby adapted to allow excess movement of the numeral wheels in either direction when suddenly checked without depression of the arms.
3. In a calculating machine, numeral wheels, carry mechanism including driving elements, members pivotally operable by the numeral wheels to render said elements operative, and springs having permanent seats in said members and permanent fixed seats and serving to hold said members in either of two angular positions.
4. In a calculating machine, numeral wheels, carry mechanism including driving elements, reciprocatory members pivotally operable by the numeral wheels to render said elements operative, and U-form springs having each an arm permanently engaging a seat in the related member and an arm permanently engaging a fixed seat and movable by the pivoted member past the point of greatest compression, to hold said memher in either of two angular positions.
5.
