Be it known that l, HARLEY J. MEGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Typogr'aphical Molds, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to type for printing machines and method of andmeans for making same, and is particularly directed to type for multigraph machines, rotary printing machines and the like.
Type of the class to which my invention is especially directed are now formed in separate blocks, that is, each distinct letter or printing character is carried by its own separate block or base. The opposite sides of these types are provided with nicks, grooves or other retention means for co operation with means carried by the cylinder cr type carrier to hold the type inplace upon combining or setting the same up in the desired order in the cylinder or carrier. The formation, setting up and use of such type is tedious, expensive and complicated and a great amount of time and labor is necessary, two persons bein usually necessary in the operation of machines employing such type, all of which increases the cost and presents an uncertainty Ain the results which should be avoided. With the teachings cf the prior art, thel formation of integral lines of type for use with machines of the multigraph or rotary type is impractical, tedious, expensive and complicated. The lines would have to be formed of a width or height far in excess of that which the printing machine would receive, and these lines would then have to be ycut to the desired dimensions and grooved or nicked Jfor attachment to the cylinder or type .car-

it is an object of my invention to decrease the cost, tediousness, complications, time and labor in forming, setting up and using the type employed in multigraph machines, rotary printing machines and the like.
A more specific object of my invention is the provision of a novel principle of and means for forming a novel line of type for such machines.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an improved mold mechanismy for casting an integral line of type of the desired height and with the grooves, nicks or other retention means for co-operation with the cylinder or type carrier. This is ahighly advantageous feature, in that the formation and setting up or combining of individual or separate type is thereby avoided as is the step of cutting down a line of type of a width or height far in excess of that which the printing or multigraph inachine will receive, and the step of grooving or nicking the opposite sides thereof.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a novel arrangement for ejecting or permitting eject-ion of a line of type so cast from the mold or casting mechanism. f
In accordance with the teachings of my invention, the line of type is cast of the desired height and with the desired grooves,
nicks, or the like for mounting in the Inultigraph or printing .mach1ne, integral through a relatively weak or fragile connecting portion with a base portion which makes up the width or height which fis formed in the casting mechanism. The line so cast is separated from its base portion by rupturing orbreaking the relatively weak or fragile connecting portion upon or after ejection from the casting mechanism giving the desired line `ready for insertion into the multigraph machine Without the performance of further operations thereupon. While the mold is preferably provided with yielding casting jaws adapted for separation to permit ejection of the line or slug with its reduced connecting portion and grooves or nicks therefrom, I do not intend to be limited to such a mold but contemplate the provision of a rigid molding mechanism for molding the desired line of type and a novel ejecting mechanism for ejecting the same therefrom. i

Referring to the drawings. the mold wheel 1 is provided with the usual openings in which the type molds are mounted. YVhile the wheel or mold carrier 1 is preferably rotated and moved axially in the usual or any preferred manner to position the mold successively for the reception of a charge of type metal and for ejection, the details and operation of the same may be varied within -the scope of mv present invention.
Although I`have shown only one mold 2 in connection with the wheel 1 for carrying out my present invention, it will be understood as this description proceeds that any number of such molds may be combined as desired. The molds 3 are shown as being of the usual formation; while the mold 4 is a, blank mold. All are suitably attached to the front faceof the wheel or disc 1. In the particular machine in which l have pracinvention is adapted for embodiment and the invention practiced with Very little change in the casting machines now in general use.
The mold 2 comprises a base member 10 having a front or outer face plate 11 extending over and secured tothe outer face thereof as by means of suitable bolts 0r screws 12,
and an associated cap member 16. The upper portion of the outer face of the base memberl() is offset as shown at 13 to receive the depending flange 14 of the inner casting jaw 15.
Spacing pieces or liners 17 and 18 which may be made of various thicknesses and interchanged according to the thickness of the type line or slug desired, are arranged between the opposing fares of the base member 10 and cap member 16 adjacent their opposite ends. The opposite faces of these mem'- bers which are suitably secured to the base 10 as by means of suitable screws 19 are preferably provided with projecting tongues for engagement with grooves 27 in the respective faces of the base member 10 and cap 16 to position and maintain the proper positioning of these parts. The inner end of the spacing piece or liner element 17 is provided with notches 21 for the reception of lugsv 22 projecting from the adjacent end of a c0- operating liner 23. The liner 23 is interchangeable with similar liners'of various lengths to secure. the desired length of type cast,`slug or line, as well understood in the art and is preferably provided with a projectinglip 25 as is the spacer 18 for notching the inner corner ot' the slug and preventing the formation of burs.
The outer face of the cap member 16, which cap member is held in place by cooperation with the mold wheel upon mounting of the mold thereupon; or by clamping it to the base 1() by means of set screws or in any other desired manner, lies flush with the offset face 13 of the base 10 and thereby provides a surface over which the outer casting jaw 28 is adapted for movement in the plane of movement of the cooperating inner jaw 15.
The outer jaw 28 comprises a longitudinally extending portion 29 having a strengthening rib 30; the contour of which is substantially that of the cap member 16. The'opposite ends of the jaw 28 are provided'with arms 31 extending inwardly between thc offset ,portion 13 of the base 10 and the inner face of the cooperating plate 11. These arms terminate in projecting ste-ms 32 threaded at their inner ends to receive suitable nuts 33 between which and the base 10 suitable coiled springs 34 are interposed. as shown in Fig. 1. The projecting stems 32 and springs 34 are preferably encased in housings 35 suitably secured to the Amold wheel 1 and lled with a lubricant. The
opposite ends 36 of the front face f the llO rae-near base 10 project out ush with the outer face of the lower portieri of the mold, the thickness of which is greater than the upper offset portion, and define channels 3T through which the arms 31 are guided and the proper positionino of the outer jaw secured and maintained. The rib is provided with guide slots through which the Shanks of bolts or screws -ll threaded into the outer face of the cap member 1li. extend and serve with the guide means provided for the arms 3l to properly guide and position the outer jaw member.
The proper relative positioning of the jaws 15 and QS is secured and maintained by guide pins fixed between their ends in the spacing pieces 1i and 1S and projectinter at their opposite ends into cooperating openings etti in the respective jaw members as shown in Fig. 4. The inner or lower portion of the base 10 is provided with bores or sockets 4 7 internally threaded at their lower ends for the reception of plug: members 48. @oiled springs @t9 arranged within these bores or sockets 47 between the plug members 48 and the lower edge of the depending flange 1st. yieldably maintain the lower jaw 15 in the position shown in Figure 1. The `upper jaw 28 is yieldably maintained in the position shown in Fig. 1 by the coiled springs 34. 1Whenthe jaw members are thus engaged with the opposite faces of the spacing pieces 17 and 18, as shown. they are set for a. charge or injection of molten type metal.
As shown in Figure 7 the opposing easting faces of the jaw members 15 and 28 are provided with longitudinally extending tongues or ridges 57 and 58 respectively for formingr the desired grooves in the opposite sides of the. type line or slug; in the casting operation. Obviously, these faces may be formed to provide a plurality of nic-ks or to give any other desired formation to the type line for mounting and holdingr the same in the particularrotary press. multigrraph machine or the like with which it. is to be used. Spaced inwardly slightly from the tongues or ridges 5T. and 5S the castingv faces of the jaws 15 and QS are provided with shoulders 60 and 61 which extend into close proximity to form the bottom surface of the type line. The/castingf face ofthe jaw Q8 is inclined from the reduced mold openingT or neck thus formed to the inner face of the jaw. The castingr face of the jaw 28 is tapered downwardly from the shoulder 61 to the inner face thereof.
rEhe opposite ends of the inner or upper face of the jaw member 15 are tapered or inclined downwardly to the outer face of the jaw as shown at 5:2 and the adjacent portions of the jaw Q8 inclined or tapered upwardly as shown at- 53. Wedge or spreading members 54 carried., in the particular embodiment shown in proper spaced relation by the vise frame 55 are adapted forcooperation with these tapered portions of the jaws 15 and 28 in this instance upon movement of the mold wheel 1 axially toward the frame- 55, to spread or wedge the casting faces of the jaw members apart against the tension of the springs 3l and 49 and permit ejection of the type line or slug from the machine. The wedge members 54C are preferably provided with banking shoulders T() which finally engage the outer faces of the mold jaws to effectively brace the same during the cjectingoperation.
The casting jaws of the mold being thus forced or spread apart and -the banking shoulders engaged therewith, an ejector blade 72 is projected by suitable ejectinig: mechanism the details of which per se are immaterial in so far as my present invention is concerned. into engagement with the bottom or 'inner edge of the slug: T5 produced. forcing the same ont from the mold between a pair of spaced knife members T6 in the usual manner.
l? rom the foregoing, it will now be apparent that the process practice-d with the mold or casting: mechanism which l have described, comprises filling or running the molten type metal in between the base and inner jaw Yon one side and the cap member and outer jaw onl the other side, spreadingr or wedging the jaw members of the mold apart to permit ejectionof the type line formed and projecting the ejector blade into engagement with the base or inner edge of the slug and forcing; the same. out from the mold between the spaced knife members carried by the vise frame to trim the Ysame and remove any burs.
The finished slujq comprises the type line or line of type 80 the height fr of which is adapted for arrangement in the machine with which it is to be usedr` joined through a reduced. weakened or relatively fragile connecting portion 81 with a base portion 82 which makes up the width or height which is formed in the casting mechanism. The. outer or upper face of the line 80 carries the printing characters or letters 83 formed in the embodiment shown by runninzcY the molten metal into the desired line of matrices assembled in the vise frame in the usual manner. rlfhe grooves or nicks tiel cast rin the opposite sides of the type line provide for mounting and holding' the same in the multigraph machine, rotary press orthe like. The casting ofl these may be varied. as already pointed out. according to the particular ward oi mounting arrangement provided in the machine with which the type is to be used. The height 71 of the type line from the outer face to the bottoni or base 85 which is formed in the castmtl ing operation, may likewise be'varied, as desired. The line 80 so cast is separated from its base portion 82 very quickly and easily by rupturing or breaking the relatively weak or fragile connecting portion 81 upon orafter ejection from the casting mechanism, giving the desired line read)v for `insertion into the multigraph or any other ,such machines are classed as casting nia-l chimes.
For example, the invention may be practiced with relatively rigid casting jaws as shown in F ig. 14, and the endy pieces between which the slug is cast provided with supplemental pieces or extended, as 4shown at 90 and 91, and adapted for movement lengthwise of the mold. In this case the molten metal is run into the assembled matrices and the line cast to the desired height and with the desired grooves or mounting means therein is then ejected lengthwise from the mold by lengthwise movement of the members 90 and 91.
I do not intend to be limited to the details shown and described, nor to the particular embodiment shown and described, and I intend that modifications in the order practicing the various steps and such other changes as will be apparent at once to those skilled in the art are contemplated within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: A
1. In a mold ofthe class described. a base member having an offset surface, a plate secured thereto, a jaw member having a depending fiange slidably mounted between said offset surface and said plate member, spring means carried bysaid base member for yieldably maintaining said jaw member in closed position. a cap member, a second jaw member slidably mounted in the plane of movement of said first jaw member. said second jaw member having mide slots cooperable with posts carried by said cap member and projecting arms guided by said base member.
2.*In a mold of the class described, a base member having an offset surface, a plate secured thereto. a jaw member having a depending flange slidably mounted between said ofi'sct surface and said plate member. spring means carried by said base member for yieldably maintaining said jaw member in closed position. a cap member` a Second jaw member slidably mounted in the plane of movement of said first jaw member., said second jaw member having guide openings cooperable with means c'arriedvby said cap member, and projecting arms guided by said base member, said arms terminating in stems threaded to receive cooperating nut members, and spring meansinterposed between said nut members and the mold for maintaining said second jaw in closed position.
3. In a device of the class described, a base member, a cap member, spacing pieces or liners between said base member and said cap member, a pair of relatively movable casting jaws and means carried by said spacing pieces or liners and cooperable with said jaws for maintaining the proper relative positioning of the same.
4. In combination, a pair of jaw members, said jaw members having opposing casting faces and tapered surfaces outwardly beyond said casting faces for cooperation with a spreading member for opening said jaw members.
5. In combination, a mold device including casting. jaws adapted to be opened to permit ejection of the casting', spreading means'engageable between the .jaw members for opening the same independentlyof the movement of the slug from'thev mold, and means cooperable with the "jaw members for bracing the same during'the spreading operation.
6. In a mold of the class described, a base member having an offset surface, a plate secured thereto. a jaw member having af depending fiange slidably .mounted between said offset surface and said plate member, spring means carried by said base member for yieldably maintaining said jaw member in closed position. a cap member, a second jaw member slidably mountedin the plane of movement ofk said first jaw member, said second jaw member having guide openings cooperable with means carried by said cap member, and projecting arms guided by said base member. spacing pieces or liners between the base and cap members. and means carried by said spacing pieces or liners and cooperable with the jaw members for positioning the same.
7. In combination. a mold wheel having the usual mold receiving openings. a mold of the usual formation adapted for mounting in one of said openings and for attachment to said mold wheel. and a moldy device comprising a body portion having opposed stationary casting faces and a spreadable jaw portion having opposed spreadable casting faces adapted for mounting in `another of the usual mold openings of said mold wheel and for attachment to said mold wheel with said first mold in place.
8. In combination. a mold wheel, a. mold i having an arm projecting naanoo? oi the usual. `formation adapted for attachment to said mold Wheel, and` amold device comprising a body portion and a spreadable jaw portion interchangeable with said first mold. l

l0. ln a mold of the claas described, a body portion having a surface upon which a jaw portion is slidably mounted, a jaw portion slidably mounted upon said surface, the bodv portion of the mold being confined entirely to one side of said surface, and the jaw portion confined entirely to the other side thereof.
l1. ln combination, arnold Wheel, a mold device adapted for attachment thereto, said mold device including a body portion constituting a mold for a portion of the opposite faces of the slug, arectilineally spreadable javv portion constituting a mold for another portion of said faces, and means independent oi rotation of the mold wheel for spreading said jaw portion to release the slug.
12. In combination, a mold Wheel. a vise frame, a mold device attached to the mold Wheel, said mold device including a spreadable jaw portion, and a Wedge member car-V ried by the vise frame for spreading said jaw portion to release the slug.
.13. ln a mold of the class described, a body portion, a spreadable jaw slidably mounted upon said body portion, said jaw having an arm projecting from said body portion, a head at the free end ot said arm and spring means interposed between said head and the body portion of the mold for moving the jaw to closed position.
