Application fled August 4., 1922. Serial No. 579,633.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Aacmnann W. Paula. and AIDNZO L. Enwanns, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Wheeling, county of Ohio and State of West Vir 'nia, have invented certain new and useful m rovements in Colla sible-Tube-Coating echanism for Tu -Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates broadly to mechanism for coating collapsiblemetal tubes, and it has for its primary object to provide an apparatus for applying to such tubes a protective coating 0 varnish immediatelyfollowing the application of the ink in printing upon such tubes. j
A further object is to provide mechanism of the character mentioned by which the varnish is applied in a thin and evenly dis-' tributed film immediately following printing upon the tube and while said tube is borne by the carrier disk of the printing mechanism.
Heretofore it has been the unlversal practice to allow the ink applied in printing upon the tubes to dry thoroughly before the application to the tubes of the usual pro-- tective coating of varnish. This practice required that a long interval elapse between the time of printing and that of'coating.
The present invention aims to effect the printing and the coating of the tubes in a single operation, or in rapidly succeeding operations, and with but a single handling of the tubes, employing ink and varnish compositions which allow of the application of the varnish to the wet ink without a resultant confused running, spreading or mingling of the ink with respect to the varnish; thereby not only avoiding the necessity for separate handlings of the tubes, but also providing for the simultaneous drying of the ink and varnish and conserving the large factory space hpretofore required in drying the varnish a one.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in.wh1ch-- Figure 1 1s a top plan view of the inventlon;
Figures 2 and 3 are opposite side elevat1ons of the same; and- Figure 4 is a section taken approximately on hne 4-4, Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates the printing roll of an ordinary type of machine, employed for printing upon collapsible metal tubes, and 2 designates the usual carrier disk by which the tubes 3 are borne into engagement "with :said printing roll, sald disk having a plurality of tube-carrymg spmdles idisposed in spaced relation on one, face thereof adjacent to its peripheral edge,
Located ina position to be engaged by the spindle-carried tubes 3 immediately subsequentto engagement of the latter with the printing roll 1 is a roll 5. designed to apply to said tubes a thin film-like coating of varnlsh. .Said roll 5 is suitably journaled upon a carrier frame consisting of parallel membets 6 'which are. superposed upon a supporting frame 7. Said members 6 have their rear ends loosely mounted upon a rotating shaft 8which is journaled in bearings 9 carried, on the rear end of the frame 7 and which is driven in any appropriate manner, as by a sprocket-chain 10 connectedto any suitable positively rotated shaft 11 of the rinting mechanism. The front ends 0 said frame members 6 are seated upon the ends of upwardly directed adjusting screws 12 which are carried by said supporting frame 7 and which are adapted for adjustment for accurately positioning the roll 5 with respect to the path of travel of the spindle-carried tubes. p
The coating material, or varnish, is supplied to the roll 5 from a suitably located eral surface of said roller, thus allowing the coatin material to directl contact said rollisposed within said container is a downwardly and inwardly inclined flexible plated15 having its inner edge located in seate bearing relation to said roller it below the level of the axis of the latter and designed to prevent leakage thereby of the coatm imateria'l. The upper edge of said plate is attached to the outer wall ofsaid container by means of bolts or screws 17.
Adjustin screws 16 directed inward through the container have their points in pressureplatev exerting relation to the back of said and are ada ted for adjustment to position the lower e ge of the latter in proper rela' tion'to said roller. 7 I i As herein shown, the transfer and dis- "tributing rollers interposed between the olution, a ratchet wheel 21 carried by an end or neck 21" thereof being associated with reservoir 13 and the varnish-appling roll 5 consist of the roller 14, "a, rol er I 18, a roller 19 intermittently shiftable between a lposition in which it contacts with 'said ro er 14 and one in which it contacts with said roller 18, and a roller 20 permanently disposed in contact .bothwith said roller 18 and said roll 5, said rollers 14 and 18 being journaled in bearings carried by the frame members6. "As is apparent, the purpose. of the various rollers inte sed between thereservoirzand the applym r0ll'5 is to provide for the distribution of t e coatin material in sue manner that saidroll wi lreceive and effect the application to the tubes .of an extremely light or thin and evenly distributed film-like coatingcapable of protectingfthe ink applied the printin roll l.
e roller throughout a small fractional part of a reva fpivo'ted dog. .or pawl 22 carried by the upper end of a lever 23 which is pivotally mounted on saidfneck and which has its 0 r posite end connected by a pitman 24 to t e wrist-pin 25 of an eccentricdisk 26 carried by the constantly rotating shaft 8. -The' shiftable roller 19. is journaled at its opposite ends invthe bifurcated or forked upper ends of upwardly and rearwardly inclined arms 27 which are pivoted at their lower ends upon the opposite frame members 6. Pivotedintermediate the ends of one of said arms 27 is one end of a rod 28 which has its opposite end mounted on said shaft/8 andlthrough which, in each revolution of said shaft said arms are shifted to momen-c tarily present the roller 19 in contact with saidroller l t for receiving from the latter a supply of the coatingmaterial, following which said roller 19 returns by gravityintocontact with the roller 18 for transferring saidsupply to the latter. The shaft 8 is directed through an oblong opening or slot 29 in the rod 28 and carries" a cam 3O which, in; each revolution thereof, engages said rod for thrusting the latter forward from its normal retracted position in fen-v gagementwith the roller 18 to a position 1n engagement with the roller 14.
14 is rotated; intermittently metal tubes, the combination with the printingeroll and the rotating carrier-disk of a tu -printi ng machine, said disk having' tube-carrym spindles on a face thereof, of

with said printing roll, a reservoir for the coating material, and means intermediate said reservoir and said'coating roll where material from the former is transferredto the latter.
