Description

N. F. B. de GHODZKO.
Locomotive and other Boilers.
Pa tented Jan. 6,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
NAPOLEON F. 13. DE GHODZKO, OF BORDEAUX, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCOM'OTIVE AND OTHER BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 146,17l, dated January 6, 1874 applicaticn filed April'10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON FELIX Bo- REIKO DE OHonzKo, of Bordeaux, in the Itepublic of France, have invented a new Im- Figure 1, a'longitudinal section of a locomotive constructed according to my improvements; Fig. 2, a transverse section on llne l 2 of Fig. 1; and, in Fig. 3, a transverse section on the broken line 3 4 5 6 7 8 of Fig. 1.
These improvements have for their object, first, to obtain a relatively greater heating-surface than in the boilers at present in use; second, to effect a considerable economy of fuel. For these purposes I replace the ordinary firebox by a long double grate arranged below the tubes, the lower part of which serves to burn the 'scorim and half-consumed matters proceeding from the upper part upon which the fresh coal is burned; besides, as the hot gases proceeding from the furnace pass into the tubes at the front of the machine, I force them to efi'ect a double circulation by placing in the middle of the heating-tubes a large return-conduit, which receives the heated gases and leads them into the chimney, thus utilizing their heat a second time. This arrangement possesses all the advantages above mentioned-that is to say, the heatingsurface is much greater than in ordinary locomotives, in consequence of the double circulation for the greater part of the length of the tubes and of the double envelope of water which surrounds the furnace. The double grate, the total surface of which is greater than ordinary grates, produces a great economy of combustible, as the lower part finishes the combustion of the scoriw and coke from the upper part, so that both waste and smoke are prevented.
In this arrangement the ordinary fire-box is suppressed, in order to give a greater length to the heating-tubes a a. Below these tubes at a I arrange a double grate, b o, the upper part, b, of which burns the fresh coal, while the lower part, 0, serves to burn the scoriee and half-consumed matters proceeding from the upper part, I). An inclined vault, g, forces the hot gases of the first grate. or upper part to come on the second grate or lower part, where they are burned. This double grate has a much greater surface than the usual grates, and by its disposition a considerable economy of fuel is obtained.
Instead of removing with his paddle the scoriae and scales of iron, the fireman has simply, from time to time, to drive away the scorize from the first grate or upper part b 011 the second grate or lower part c. In this operation the upper layers of fresh combustible fall on the bars and take the place of the scorine, so that a very complete combustionis obtained.
As the hot gases proceeding from the fur nace pass into the tubes at a at the front of the machine, I force them to effect a double circulation by placing in the middle of the heatingtubes to a a large return-conduit, d, which receives the heated gases and leads them into the chimney, thus utilizing their heat a second time by this double circulation.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the double fire-grate heating-tubes a with a large return-conduit, cl, which receives the heated gases and leads them into the chimney, thus utilizing their heat a second time by this double circulation.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing wit nesses.
