In the preferred embodiment of the in vention shown in the drawings, the change of case is effected by shifting a type-bar hanger or segment in a vertical plane relatively to the machine frame; the construc-' tion illustrated being designed for use in a front-strike portable typewriting machine having a platen and carriage foldable forwardly over the keyboard in a manner simi lar to the well-known Corona typewriter.
It will be obvious, however, that the invention may be embodied in non-compactible as well as compactible machines, and in machines in which the change of case is effected by shifting the platen. .It will be understood also that, while I have shown a.
- mechanism in which the shiftable support moves vertically, the invention is not limited to shift mechanism in which a segment or platen is moved in a vertical plane to I change the case.

The invention has for its objects to,pro-- ported at three points only by antifriction hearings; to provide antifriction supportln'g and guiding means for asegment-carrler or other member shiftable to change case in which wear in'all the bearings is automatically taken up; and to provide antifriction guiding means at opposite sides of a support which is shiftable to change case so constructed that the companion race- ;way members of all the bearings are forced toward each other-by a single spring.

In the construction illustrated in the drawings, the main frame of the machine is formed of pressed steel in one piece and comprises side walls 1 connected by a rear wall .2 and a front rail 3.' A sheet metal bracket 4 is rigidly secured to the front face of the rear wal 2 byfour screws 5 at a point midway between the side walls of the frame. Bracket 4 is provided'with a forwardly projecting arm adjacent its lower end lying in a vertical plane and doubled upon itself to form a raceway member 6. The inner portion of the doubled member 6 is rovided with a ball channel 7 facing toward the longitudinal center line of the machine and cooperating with an outwardly facing ball channel 8' in a forwardly'extending doubled raceway member 9 formed integrally with an integral arm or stem 10 depending from the lower edge of a sheet metal segment-carrying plate 11. The segment carrier 11 is of general arcuate form so as to conform substantially with the curvature of a curved type-bar hanger or segment 12 de tachably held thereto by three screws 13.
The segment carrier is only slightly larger than the segment and arm 10 on the carrier is located midway the ends of the carrier. 1
The channels in both raceway members 6 and 9 are of similar construction, being V- shaped in cross-section and formedby slittingthe rearwardly extending portion of the doubled member forwardly from its rear edge adjacent both they upper and lower edges of said portion and pressing the metal intermediate the slits toward the other portion of the member to form the ball channel.
The base of the ball channel rests against the forwardly extending portion of the doubled member," thus bracing the channel-carrying portion oftheraceway member. The two fingers or tongues 14 at the upper and lower ends of the raceway channels prevent the ball 15 in the raceway formed by channels 7 and 8,.from traveling beyond the ends of the channels and dropping out of the. raceway.

- The stemportion 10 of the carrier 11 is provided at its lower end with a forwardly extending foot 45 having an upstanding flange 46 at its forward end. A transversely extending metal bar 47 is connected midway its ends with the flange 46 by a screw 48. A swingin shift frame of substantially U- shape in p an view is mounted in the main frame forward of the's'egment carrier. This shift frame comprises a transversely extending rock shaft 49, j ournalled at its ends on the polnts of two pivot screws 50 whichextend 'through the side walls 1 of the main frame,
and a pair of'rearwa-rdly extending sheet metal rock arms 5.1 fixed on said shaft to rock therewith in unison. The rock arms 51 have reduced endrportions 52 fitting loosely in apertures 53 in bar 47. adjacent the opposite ends of the bar. The connection between permit the necessary relative movement therebetween due to the swinging movement of the arms and the direct vertical movement of the bar. A-coiled spring 54, connected at its upper end with a tension adjusting screw 55 threaded through an arm 56 on bracket 22, is secured at its lower end to one of .the arms 51 of the shift frame. Spring 54 has sufficient tension to rock the shift frame upwardly and shift the segment carrier .and segment to its-normal or up.-
permost position, shown in Figs. 3, 6 and 9, and hold the segment and carrier in this position until the shiftframe is rocked downwardly by one of the shift key levers. v
The normal or lower case character printing osition of the segment is determined by an adjustable stop screw 57 threaded through a yoke 58 formed on bracket 4 and which is adapted to engage an abutment 59 on the type-bar segment 12. A'suitable lock nut is preferably screwed on stop 57, as shown, for locking the stop in adjustedposition. The lowermost or Fig. shiftposition of the segmentis determined by an adjustable stop screw 60 threaded through a yoke 61 formed on bracket 4 and adapted tobe engaged-by the foot 45-on the carrier, as shown iii-Fig;
Theintermediate or Cap. shift position" of the segment is determined by an adjustable stop screw 62 threaded through the transverse member of'a. U-shaped sheet metal bail 63 and adapted to beengaged by foot 45, as shown in Fig. 4, to'arrest the segment in Gap. shift position. A suitable lock nut is screwed on stop 62,. as shown. The side arms of the bail are connected at their upper ends by two pivot screws 64 with an arm 65 on bracket 22 and with a bracket 66 secured to the right hand side wall of the machine. A pair of coiled springs 67 secured at their forward ends to the side arms of bail 63 and at their rear ends to the rear wall 2 of the main-frame normally pull the bail rearwardly to the position shown in Figs. '1,
3 and 4 so that stop 62 is normally in position to arrest the segment and carrier in Gap. shift position. The.rearward movement of the bail under the influence of springs 67 is arrested when the bail reaches the position shown in Fig. 3, in which position, the transverse member of the bail is parallel with and a slight distanceabove lugs 68, projecting forwardly from yoke 61 on bracket 4, the side arms of the bail are vertical, and the rear edge of the forwardly ofiset transverse member of the bail touches a vertical plane through the pivots 64. This arrangement permits the rearward movement of the bail to normal position without danger of binding and rovides a rigid support for the bail arms 51 and bar 47 is sufliciently loose to and stop 62 thereon when theshift mechanisment for printis operated to position the se ing capital letters, as more ully hereinafter described.
Duplicate pairs of shift key levers are provided at opposite sides of the keyboard for rocking the shift frame. The two sheet 'n'ietal Cap. shift key levers 69 and the two sheet metal 'Fig.- shift key levers '70 are pivotally supported at-their rear ends on a sheet metal key lever fulcrum bar 71 which extends transversely of the machine and is secured at its ends to theside walls 1 of the main frame. The key levers are pivotally connected with the bar 71 by passing the hook portions 72 on .the rear ends thereof through. apertures 73' in the fulcrum bar. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, a support shiftable in an up-and-down direction to vary the re-' lation between type-carrying means and a platen, a pair of side bearings for the support located adjacent opposite sides of the frame, a third side bearing for the support locatedadjacent the longitudinal center of the frame, each of said bearings comprising a pair of raceway members on the support and frame and a ball in the raceway formed by .said members, and means for yieldably urging the support sidewise throughthe medium of one of the raceway members on the frame.

In a typewriting machine, the coinbination of a main frame, a sheet metal caseshift support having portions thereof bent at an angle to thebody of the support and each formed with a ball channel, sheet metal guide members in the main frame and each having a channel cooperating with one of 'said channels on the support to form raceways, balls in said raceways', means for yieldably pressing one of said guide memers transversely of the frame toward the adjacent channeled portion of the support, and means for shifting the support to change case.
