citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York,
in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of whichthe following is a specifioation.
My invention relates to case shifting mechanism for typewriting machines and the object of sai invention is to provide simple and efficient mechanism of the character specified.

Various guide links turn on a pivot wire 22 in radial guide slots 23 formed in a segment 24 carried by the auxilia frame. A restoring s rin 25 connects eac driver with its asso oiate link 13 in order to restore the parts to normal position. The types 26 normally rest on theface of an inkin pad 27 contained in a trough-like casing 28 etachably secured to the frame of the machine. sleeve 47 provided with a circumferential shoulder 48 which bears against the forward face of the arm 46 as shown in Fig. 3. The forward end of the hollow spindle 47 is provided with a bearing face 49 for cooperation with a set of anti friction balls 50. A threaded stem 51 coacts with the threads of the sleeve 47 and extends therethrough for cooperation with a nut 52 at the rear end of 1a the stem where it projects beyond the, sleeve. This nut is larger than the opening in the depending arm 46 and'bears against the rear "face of the arm to secure the hollow spindle andthe stem 51 thereto. An enlarged head 53 5 is provided at the forward end of the stem 51 and the under side of this head is beveled at 54 to provide a bearing for cooperation with the set of anti-friction balls 50. The head is also provided with a slit 55 for cooperation with a screw driver or other suitable tool tofacilitate an adjustment of the bearing 54 relatively to the bearing 49. The bearing faces 49 and 54 are inclined towards each other and form a race-way for cooperation with 5 the set of anti-friction balls 50.
A roller 56 has a central opening so that-it 1 may surround the head 53 and enlarge the portion of the hollow spindle 47. This roller is also provided within the central opening therein with a V-shaped groove 57 1n the median plane thereof for cooperation with the set ofanti-frictionballs 50. By these means a ball bearing su port is provided for the roller 56 and a re lative ad ustment between the bearings 49 and 54 may be efiected. The tread of the roller is grooved for 006 eration with a shift rail 58 which extends t roughout the width of the machine and is recessed at the opposite sides of the 4 center thereof and at different points in its length as indicated at 59 and 60. The recesses 59 and 60 are preferably near each end of the rail, the recess 60 receiving an upward projection 61 on an upright two-part 45 link 62.
Each link is provided with a off-set arm '63 which carries an upward y projecting member 64 received in the associated recess 59 in the shift rail. Pins 65 and 66 extend 5 transversely through openings in the shift rail and in the projections 64 and 61 respectively to rigidly secure the link 62 to the s rift rail at different points in the length of the latter. Each of the links 62 is refer- 55 ably a two-part link united by a turn uckle 67 which cooperates with right and left- -hand screw threads on the two sections of the link in order to unite them and to provide means for lengthening and shortening 0 each link at will. The upper member of each link 62 is provided with a verticalface 68, the faces 68 on the two shift links being parallel and cooperating with grooved guide rollers 69 secured by headed pivot screws 70 5 to lugs 71 which project upwardly from a bar 72 that extends transversely of the machine from side to side thereof and is secured at its ends by screws 73 to inwardly projecting lugs 74 on the side plates of the machine. The guide rollers 69 thus cooperate with the 70 guide links 62 to guide them in their vertical shifting movements and to maintain. the shift rail against displacement from a true horizontal position. The-lower end of each guide link 62 is pivoted at 75 to a rearwardly 75 extending arm 76 projecting from a shifting frameshown in detail in Fig. 5. This shifting frame comprises a rock shaft 77 flattened at 78 for cooperation with the arms 76 in order to efiect a rigid connection between said arms and the rock shaft. The ends of the rock shaft where they project beyond the arms 76 are recessed at 79 for the reception of pivot pins 80 (see-Fi 6) formed on the ends of set screws 81 w ich are received in 5 threaded openings in the base 1 of the machine and cooperate outside of the base with lock nuts 82 to secure the screws in their adjusted positions. Each of the arms 76 has a'dependin hook-like arm 83 to which the go forward en of a contractile spring 84 is secured, the rear end of said spring receiving a threaded stem 85 which is screwed into the spring and coacts with the convolutes thereof to receive an adjustment relatively to the spring. The rear end of the member 85 is provided with an eye 86 which coo erates with a hook" 87 received at its threar edend\ 88 in a tapped opening in the base 1 of the machine. By these means an adjust- 00 ment of the tension of each of the springs 84 may be provided. The arm 76 at 'the left-hand side of the machine is extended forward to form a key lever 89 provided with a finger key 90: By depressing the finger key 90 the arms 76 are elevated, thereby moving the links 62 upwardly and effecting an upward movementof the shift rail carrying the platen frame through the interposed bearing roller 56 upwardly, the platen frame being guided in its shifting movements by the parallel links 34 and 35. The construction is such that the springs 84 constitute counterbalancing springs to take up some of the weight of the platen, platen frame and theassociated parts so that comparatively slight pressure exerted upon the shift key 90 will effect an upward shift of the platen. The construction also provides efficient ,means for maintaining the shift railin the proper horizontal position at all times by reason of the rigi connection maintained between the links 62 and the shift rail and the 006 eration of the guide rollers 69 with the shif constituting for all essential urposes a rigid frame guided by the grooved guide roller 69 and yet afiordingl an individual ad'ustment at; each end oft e shift rail for e ecting a proper adjustment thereof. Projecting out- 130 ting links; the links 62 and shift rail wardly from each of the end plates of the platen frame is a stoppin 91 (see Figs. 2 and 3) which is provided with a circumferential shoulder 92 that bears against the outer face of the associated end plate 39 and is received in an opening 94 in an end plate of the truck and projects therethrough, the inner end portion of the pin being threaded for cooperation witlra nut 93 by which the pin is rigidly secured to an end plate of the platen frame. Each of these pins 91 cooperates with the screw stops 95 and 96 received in tapped openings in the top and bottom walls respefctively of the opening 94 to limit the s 11 ting movements of the platen frame.
Each ofthe screws 95 and 96 is provided with a lock nut 97 by which it is secured in its adjusted position.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a ty ewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a shift rail therefor, and a plurality of'key actuated shift links each connected to the shift rail at a phirality of points lengthwise of the shift rai '2. In a ty pe writing machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a shift'rail therefor, a plurality of shift links each connected to the shift rail at a plurality of points lengthwise of the shift rail, a key actuated rock shaft, and crank arms carried by said rock shaft and connected with said shift links.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a shift rail therefor, and a plurality of key actuated shift links connected to said shift rail, each of said shift links being provided with an off-set arm that extends laterally from the link and longitudinally of the shift rail, each link being secured to the shift rail at the body portion of the link and at the off-set arm thereof.
4. In a ty ewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a shift rail therefor, a plurality of key actuated shift links connected to said shift rail, each of said shift links being provided with an off-set arm that extends laterally from the link and longitudinally of. the shift rail, each link being secured to the shift rail at the body portion of the link and at the off-set arm thereof, and means for effecting an adjustment in the length of each link.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a shift rail therefor, key. actuated links connected with and operative to shift, said shift rail, guide rollers cooperative with said links, and means for effecting an adjustmentin the length of each link.
6. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a vertically shiftable )laten, a vertically movable shift rail thereor, vertically movable links connected with and operative to shift said shift rail, a key by said rock shaft operative with said links,
actuated rock shaft, crank arms carried by said rock shaft and connected with and supporting said links, adjustment in the length of each link.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable laten, a shift rail therefor, a plurality of siift links each connected to the shift rail at a plurality of points lengthwise ofthe shift rail, a key actuated rock shaft, crank arms carried by said rock shaft and connected with said shift links, and means for effecting an adjustment in the length of each link.
8. In a typewriting. machine, the coinbination of a shiftable platen, a shift rail, links rigidly connected to said shift rail, a key actuated rock shaft, crank arms carried and pivotally connected to said links, a second set of crank arms on said rock shaft, and springs connected to said second set of crank arms.
9. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a vertically shiftable platen, a vertically shiftableshift rail, links connected to said shift rail, means for effect-- ing an adjustment in the length of each of said links, a key actuated rock shaft, crank arms carried by said rock shaft and pivotall connected to said links, a second set of crank arms on said rock sh aft, springs connected to said second setof crank arms, and means for effecting an adjustment of said springs.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of links rigidly connected to and operative to shift said shift-rail, grooved guide rollers,

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable platen, a ver tically movable shift rail, vertically movable links rigidly connected to said shift rail and having inner parallel faces, and outwardly projecting off-set arms which extend longitudinally of the shift rail, and which are secured thereto, grooved guide rollers coo erative with the inner parallel faces of said links, means for effecting an adjustment in the length of each of said links, a key actuated-rock shaft, crank arms on said rock shaft and to which the lower ends of said links are pivotally connected, a secondset of crank arms on said rock shaft, springs connected to said second set of crank arms, and means for adjusting said springs.
16. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a vertically shiftable platen, a shift rail therefor, and a plurality of key actuated members projecting from said shift rail and each connected thereto at a plurality of points lengthwise of the rail.
17. In a typewriting machine, the com-v bination of a carriage, a platen frame connected to sald carriage by parallel links, a
roller carried by said platen frame, a shift rail cooperative with said roller to effect a shift of the platen frame, shift links, each shift link having an off-set outwardly projecting arm that extends longitudinally of the shift rail, means for connecting each of said shiftlinks to the shift rail at different;
points in the length of the rail, grooved guide rollers cooperative with said shift links, and key actuated means for moving the shift links longitudinally to effect a shift of the platen.
18 In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shift rail recessed at different points in the length thereof, shift links each having projections that take into recesses at different points in the length of the shift rail and which are firmly secured therein, and key actuated means for moving said links.
