ANDREW YUROW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., BROOKLYN,
lAhttZ TE? E FEQQE.
ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL. M. ELOWSKY, OF
NEW YORK.
LOCK.
Application filed August 2, 1922. serial .No. 579,247.
To all who-m it may concern:
Be itknown'that LANDREW YUnow, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Main hattan, in the county and State ofNew York, have invented a new and Improved Look, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
ing and keeper and aims as one of itsprincipal objectsto provide a lock in which the bolt is effectively protected against jimmying or tampering with either from the out side or inside of the door, both by the keeper and the casing.
The invention aims as a further object to provide a lock keeper and casing construction which is applicable either to a spring lock or looks of the dead-latch type.
With the above recited and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lock constructed in accordance with the invention illustrating the bolt and keeper in em gaged position.
Fig. 2 is an end View of the same with the bolt and keeper in disengaged position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the lock and keeper.
Fig. 4 is a rear View of the casing illustrating the keeper in section and engaged with the bolt.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, designates the body of the casing and 11 the cover plate therefor, the
bolt 12 being slidably mounted in the casing and extending from one end thereof. As set forth in the previous patent, the bolt 12 embodies an oblong rectangular skeleton member consisting of side bars 18 and 14 connected at their forward ends by a crossbar15 extending beyond the side bars as at 16 and 17 and being of substantially triangular shape in cross section to form a sharp web adapted to engage with the keeper. The keeper consists of an angle plate having flanges 18 and 19 adapted to be secured by screws or other fastening devices to the door frame provided with a plurality of spaced rearwardly turned hook members 20, 21 and 22. The hook members are adapted to be normally engaged by the bar 15 of the bolt so that the extensions 16 and 17 of the bar 15 rest against the inner shoulders of the members and 22, while the wedge shaped shoulders 23 and 24 of the casing rest againstthe outer faces of the members 20 and'22 and the lugs 25 on the outer members 20 and 22 engage suitable recesses 26 in the shoulders 23 and 24.
Any suitable bolt actuating mechanism such as disclosed in the previous patent is arranged within the casing for the purpose of effecting the engagement of the bolt with the keeper by the retraction of the same in the casing and the disengagement of the bolt from the keeper by the projection of the same from its casing.
The means for protecting the bolt when in locked condition, against tampering with or jimmying, and which means constitutes the invention consists in providing the covering plate 11 of the casing with an upstanding rib A at the forward end of said cover plate and forming the cover plate with forwardly projecting guard lugs B, which lugs overlie and cover the side bars 13 and 14 to preclude the possibility of engaging a jimmy or other tool therewith when the bolt is locked. The rib A also acts as a guard for preventing the insertion of a tool between the keeper and the lock and further serves as a strengthening rib. The means for protecting the bolt further includes the formation of guard lugs C on the forward end of the face of the casing body, which lugs overlie, and cover the side bars 13 and 14: at the inner side of the lock to preclude and prevent any possibility of engaging a jimmy or other tool with the bolt when locked. As illustrated the connecting web 27 at the juncture of the members 20, 21 and 22 with the flange 19 is rabbeted as at l) to receive and accommodate the guar W nag lugs when the keeper and bolt. are engaged. From the foregoing it will be seen that the bolt in a lock of the character set forth is effectively protected against tampering withor'jimmying, and this without material adding to the cost of production.
I claim:
1. The combination with a lock of the character described including a casing, a bolt consisting of a pair of side bars and a crossbar uniting said side bars at the front ends, andv a keeper with which the bolt is engageable, of guard, lugs extending from one end of the casing and overlying the side bars.v of the keeperat ,llhdfI'OIlt. and. rear faces thereof. j 7 v2. The combination. with: a lock of the character described including a casing, of a bolt therein composed of a pair of side bars,
a crossbar uniting said, side bars at their .front; ends, anda. keeper .engageable with said, bolt, of spaced guard (lugsoverlying the .front andfrear, faces ofthe side bars and projecting from one; end of the casing,
certain of said guard lugs extending into and received by the keeper.
3. Thecombination with a lock of the character described comprising a casing,- a
bolt therein "composed of a pair of side bars,
a crossbar :uniting said, side bars. at their front vends,cpr0jections on said Crossbars adapted to normally engage; a keeper, said keepercomposed of three members,.two of Y which being provided with shoulders for the engagement by said projections of the crossbar, shoulders on said casing engaging the outer faces of the outer keeper members,
one of said side bars of the bolt being re 7 cessed at its lowver edge, of guard lugs which being. provided; with? shoulders for the engagement said, projections of nthe crossbar, shoulders onsaidlcasinggengaging (the outer 'iaces .of theiouterkeeperi'me nhers,
one of said side bars of theoboltebein-g recessedat its ,1owerc.e,dge,.: of iguagrdlatugs formed on and projecting, from one aendiof the casing to overlie and cover the front and,
rearvfa ces of the side: bars, and outwardly" projecting ribs formed at theflfronfi and-rearof the casing, as; and for .the.,.,purp.osespecified. v v
