' artiste THADDEUS S. .GRIIVIES, OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR' TO LUMMUS COTTON GIN COMPANY, OF'COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, A CORPORATION OF GEORGIA.
GEAR LOOK FOR COTTON TRAIVIPERS.
Application filed June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,725.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS S. Genius, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee, and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gear Locks for Cotton Trampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is illustrated as applied to a cotton tramper as I have found it well adapted to the control of the lint paddle used for supplying cottonto a press box from a condenser. The invention is not limited to this use, however. It is available wherever the object is to cause an intermittent action of operating gears. The subject matter of this application is illustrated in my co-pending applicationfor patent for cot- .ton tramper, Serial No. 567 ,723, filed June Figure 1 shows the gear lock device in side elevation. Figures 2, 3, t and 5 are details showing the positions of the parts in their operation.
The gear 1 I shall call a main operating gear appropriately mounted upona shaft 2 and of size to effect the timely actuation of any operating element. -The gear 3 is an idler meshing with gear 1 and a working gear indicated at 4:.
The gear 1 is shown with the usual working surface but interrupted throughout substantially one half of its periphery. This surface is indicated at 5. I shall term it a stop surface for the purpose of this description. Its extent may be. varied to conform to the requirements. .In the application for patent above referred to I haveshown a paddle to feed cotton through a lint slide and my object there is to time the action. of the paddle relatively to that of the tramper head or follow block.
Upon this stop surface I provide a flange 6 having shoulders 7 at its ends.
The idler gear 3 is of the ordinary type except for a notch 8 in its periphery.
At 9 I have shown a pawl of formation at its headadapted tov conform to. notch 8.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that by properly gaging the diameter of gear 1 and the extent of its stop surface 5 the effective action of the working gear 4 may be regulated. The shoulder 7 of flange 6 contactsvwith the pawl 9 and holds it in the notch 8 and maintains the idler 3 and work ing gear l as against rotation until the working surface ofthe main operatinggear 1 again meshes with the idler.
It will be apparent that I may vary the size of the main operating gear 1 ,it may be smaller than the idler if conditions require. Also it may be interrupted at a plurality of points, instead of at one as illustrated. The same function will result only more frequently. Likewise it will be noted that the idler is not essential to the spirit of my invention. The main operating gear may act directly upon gear 4, with the same result. F or practical purposes, however, I prefer to use the idler.
I claim as my invention:
1.v In a gear lock, the combination with a main operating gear, a working gear, and an intermediate idler, the working surface of said main operating gear being interrupted by a stop surface, of a locking notch in said idler, and a pawl to engage said.
notch and be held therein by said stop surface. 2. In a gear lock, the combination with main operating gear, a working gear, and
an intermediate idler, the working surface of said main operating gear being interrupted by a stop surface, having a flange, of :1.
locking notch in said idler, and pawl to engage said notch and be held therein by said flange.
3. Ina gear lock, the combination with a main operating gear and a ,driven gear ac tuated thereby, the working surface of said main operating gear being interrupted by a stop surface, of a locking notch in said driven gear, and a pawl to engage said notch and be held therein by said stop surface.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification. 1 I
THADDEUS S. CRIMES.
