To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. \VARREN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack- Pulli-ng Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Tack pulling machines for removing the side lasting tacks oflasted shoes are commonly provided with automatically operated tack pulling jaws. Such tack pulling jaws, however, are not adapted always to pull the anchor tacks for the toe wire as these tacks are sometimes driven too far into the last to be engaged by the jaws and,
accordingly, these tack pulling machines are equipped with a so-called anchor tack puller one form of which consists merely of a stationary claw having a curved forked endsecured to the frame of the machine.
In the use of this anchor tack puller, considerable difficulty and annoyance is experienced by the operator on account of the tendency of the tacks tobind in the claw after they have been pulled. Such tacks must,
of course, be removed before the device can again be effectively used.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a tack pulling device of novel and improved construction which,
upon pulling a tack, acts to eject the tack from the device."
With this and other objects in view the features ofthe present invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
The several features of the present inven tion will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

0 and 3 are side and plan views respectively of the device; and Fig. f is a longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, indicating by dotted lines the relative positions of the parts of the device during the operation of pulling a tack.
The tack pulling device as illustrated in the drawings comprises a tack pulling claw 6 which is securedto a bracket 8 by means of a cap screw 10. The bracket 8 is adapted to be secured to the frame of a lasting tack pulling machine or other support. Thetack pulling claw is provided with a notched or forked end 12, the under side of which is curved upwardly and the upper side of which is provided with a recess 14: having its bottom wall curved in the arc of a circle longitudinally of the claw. The recess 1% is slightly wider than the space between the tack engaging edges of the forks of the claw to provide longitudinally curved shoulders 18 for engaging and supporting the head of a tack in the usual manner.
In the illustrated device the tack ejector comprises a bow-shaped spring arm 16 the free end of which is flattened and rests upon the shoulders 18 close to the extremities of the forked ends and extends upwardly substantially perpendicular thereto. The other end of the spring arm 16 is secured to a lug 20 on the bracket 8, which lug is in alinement with the claw and is bifurcated to form cars 21. The end of the spring arm is coiled about a. pin 22 connecting the cars 21 and is held from turning on the pin by engagement with a shoulder 24: on the lug and by the engagement of the end of the spring arm with the rear end of the claw. The spring arm is bent downwardly and then upwardly from the pin 22 in order to provide the desired yield to the free end of the spring arm as hereinafter described. In using the device to pull a lasting tack, the shoe is forcibly brought against the end of the claw in such manner as to cause the head of the tack to ride down on the shoulders 18, and the tack is then pulled by tipping the shoe in the usual manner.
The tack in riding down on the shoulders 18 engaged the free end of the spring arm 16 and forces it rearwardly therewith, the spring arm being adapted to yield in such manner that its free end will remain in substantial contact with the shoulders 18 during the rearward movement thereof. This movement of the free end of the spring arm places the arm under tension, so that when the tack is freed of the shoe the arm will act to force or eject the tack from the claw.
While the features described above are well adapted for use in the type of tack pulling device illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that, except as defined in the claims, certain features of the invention are not limited to a construction having an ejecting means that engages the heads of the tacks, and moreover are not limited to any particular type of tack pulling device.
The nature and scope of the present invention having been indicated and a device embodying the several features of the invention in their preferred form having been specifically described, what is claimed is 2- 1. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling member, and independent means engaging the head of a tack for ejecting the tack from said member.
2. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling claw having a forked end, and means comprising a. member engaging the head of the tacks and working in a direction substantially perpendicular to the shank of the pulled tacks to eject the tacks from said claw.
3. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling claw having a forked end, and an ejector engaging the head of a tack for forcing the tack from said claw.
fl:- A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling member, and means comprising a spring arm engaging the head of a tack for ejecting the tack from said member.
A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling member having a tack supporting face, and an ejector working over said face for forcing tacks therefrom.
6. A tack pulling device having, in com bination, a tack pulling claw, and a spring arm having one end extending adjacent the end of said claw whereby the pulling of a tack acts to tension the spring arm to cause the tack when pulled to be ejected from said claw.
7. A tack pulling device having, in com bination, a tack pulling claw having a forked end, and a shaped spring arm having its free end extending normally adjacent to the extremity of the forked end and capable of movement lengthwise of the forked end.
8. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a stationary tack pulling claw against which an article is moved in pulling a tack from the article, and means for ejecting the tack from the claw.
'9. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a stationary tack pulling claw against which an article is moved in pulling a tack from the article, and means rendered active upon pulling a tack for ejecting the tack from the claw.
10. A tack pulling device havin in combination, a stationary tack pnl ing claw against which an article is moved in pulling a tack from the article, and means comprising a member engaging the head of the tack for ejecting the tack from the claw.
11. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling claw having a recess extending to the end of the claw for receiving the head of a tack, and an ejector working in said recess to force the tack from the claw.
12. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling claw, and means comprising a member engaging the head of a a tack for ejecting the tack outwardly from the tack engaging end of said claw.
13. The combination with a device for pulling a tack, of an ejector engaging the head of the tack and rendered active by the relative movement of the tack and the Julling device, upon pulling the tack for forcing the tack from said device.
14:. The combination with a device for pulling a tack, of means engaging the head of the tack and acting independently of said device for ejecting the tack from said device.
15. A tack pulling device having, in combination, a tack pulling member arranged to engage the under side of the head of a tack to pull the tack and then independently to support the tack, and means engaging the head of the tack for ejectingthe tack from said device.
16. A tack pulling device having in combination a notched tack pulling member and an ejector for forcing pulled tacks from the notch of said member.
17. A tack pulling device'having in combination a tack pulling claw and a resiliently operatingejeetor for forcing pulled tacks from said claw.
