rENoEPosT ATTACHMENT. y
rignal application lled October 8, 1919, *Serial No. 329,316. Divided andfthis `4, v1921. kSerial N10. 505536.5`. .4 p .f
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known thatI, PERCY T. BAinnY,-a
' citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Fencepost Attachment,-
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to fences and is a divisional application of my application Serial No. 329,316. The object of the invention is to provide any improved construction of attachment at the top for retaining a pipe or bar in position.
Another object of theinvention `is toprovide an attachment for the top of fence posts which will give additional fence structure and at the same time present an ornamental appearance. 1 f y A still further obj ect in view is to provide an improved construction of pipe holding means at the top of posts, which in addition,
presents means for carrying fencing wire and thereby permit the use of a compara# tively` short post and at the same time provide a maximum height of fence.
In the accompanying Vdrawings- Figure 1 is a side view of a post and at? tachment disclosing one embodiment of the invention, certain parts being shown in sec-l tion.
. Figure 2 is a front view of the structure shown in Figure 1, the lower part being broken away.
Figure 3 is a disassembled` view of al pair of clamping arms embodying certainr feal tures of the invention.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through Figure 1 approximately on line 4 4. i
Referring to the accompanying drawings said post being designed to carry fencing'wire 2 held in place in any desired manner, as for instance, by tying members 3. In some instances it is desired to increase the height of a fence considerably or slightly and in addition to provide anornamental top or nish to the fence. When it is desired 'to increase the effective height of the fence, some ad itional fencing material is connected v to the post so as to extend above the same.
In the present instance, the effective height has been increased by the provision of clamping arms 4 and 5, arm 5 being pronumeral, 1 indicates aypost similar to7 that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,190,080,
appli-atan: 'ne'aip-y cette@ vided with fa .pressed out 'hoo-k .mem-loer y which carries'a top wire 2.: lrIhis'wiremay be arranged in line with the yStop of the post as shown in Figure 1or may be made` v slightly higher if desired by pressing out the hook member 6 at a higher point. The clamping arms 4 andf are eachprovided with a cut7 which extends approximately half across the width of the arms so that they d may beinterlocked as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Thesearms are provided withrounded pipe gripping portions 8 andA 9 land with substantially roundedk fence gripping sec-` tions 10and11.` The portions 8 and 9extend upwardly and form the ,ornamental extend# ing lugs 12 and 13. The portions 8 and 9 are adapted to grip tightly a rodl .or pipe` 1 4 which acts as a sort of ridge pole or top bar to the fence. A bolt 15 'extends through i' suitable slotslv and 17 in the clamping arms 4 and 5 and actsto firmly.` clampsaid arms to the post. Ordinarilythe arms arepositioned on they post so that the pipe- 14 will rest on top of the post. However, under so-me circumstances, the post may be set in the laoy ground to a greater depththan others or to" i',
ay less depth or possibly it may be set'in a justable in respect to said means for varyhollow of the land. The arms 4 and 5- may i ing the distance betweensaid pipe'and said i post,\said arms being provided withslots` for locking one arminto the other.. l
2. An attachment for fence postsl com-` top member of the fence, said arms being formed adjacent their top ends with trans@v ver-se slots for permitting onefarm to inter- -lock in `the other, said arms having sub stantiallyarc shaped sections at the opposite end, and a clamping bolt extending through said arcshaped seotions, and the yfence post for clamping the arms to the'posts.v
3. An attachmentv for fence posts comioo prising ak pair of arms adapted to grasp' the prising a pair of attacheble arms adapted to be secured to the 4top end of the post, Suid arms interlocking` with euch othei1 upon said tope-nd of the post und leaving theiehetween a space for fencing material to pass the-ifethroug'h, each f1-rin having an utc-shaped Secition adjacent one end and a longitudiiml slot n approximately in the center of each section.y
- and u clamping bolt extending` thi'ough Seid 'suiclslots und through the post i'o clamping' the arms of the post, Seidslots perniittinga Vertical adjustment of the arme with re- 4. A' fence post attachment lcomprising im arm zii'cuuted adgncent one end to lit en the Side of the post, and Mounted at the oppositev end in e plane tiunsveree to; the` first 5. A lencefpost zittachinent comprising an v'erin having an 'ziircildtedl Section adjacent its lower endend presenting 2L longitudinal slot, und a tra'neveisely laicuuted section et the upper end piefscnting'n slet ti'cnsvegse to the iiist mentioned slot.
