. 'REPLACEABLE LADDER none.
Application filed J'anuary30, 1922.. Serial No. 532,544.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described, whichmay be secured directly upon the ladder rail without any special preparation of the rails.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is extremely simple in construction and which may be manufactured from a sin le piece of stock.
O ther objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularl pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the acco1npanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one end of the ladder rung, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a modified form of the ladder rung.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of ordinary ladder rails 1 and 2, which are not previously prepared in any way, except that their inner faces may be smoothed by aplane. The railsl and.2 are'placed in substantial parallel relation to one another if the ladder is to be of the straight type.
The rungs are composed of single pieces of angle iron 3 having sides 4: and 5 at right angles to one another and of equal width,
In preparing the means for fastening the rung or angle iron 3 to the rails 1 and 2, a slit is made at the intersecting points of the sides 4 and 5 adjacenteach end of the angle iron 3. This slit is substantially the so same depth as the width of one of the sides 1 4: and 5. y
The side 5 is thereupon bent laterally ateach of its ends on the line 6, which line is transverse to the rung 3 and disposed. at the 56 bottom of the slit previously described. The
and 11 are countersunk, as shown at 13, to accommodate the headof the wood screws 12.
laterally bent portions 7 thus formed, of the side 5 are disposed so that they are each in exact perpendicular planes to the sides 4 and 5.
Laterally bent portions of the side 4 "are, bent along the lines 8 transverse to the side 4 and disposed at the base of the slit previously described. The laterally bent portions 9 of the side 4, thus formed, are also in exact perpendicular "planes to thesides 4 .and '5 of the angle iron The laterally bent portions 7 and 9 are therefore both in the same plane and their surfaces contiguous.
Centrally located openings 10 and 11 are provided through the portions 7 and 9, respectively, and provide means for receiving wood screws 12 for securing the rung 3'to the rails 1 and 2. The inner surfaces of the portions 7 and 9 adjacent the openings 10 From the-foregoing description of the various parts of the device, theoperation thereof maybe readily understood. The rung 3 may be used as a replacement rung, that is, to take the place of the ordinary typeof spindle rung which has come loose from its engagement with the rails 1 and 2 of the ladder by breakageor the like and for this purpose it is merely necessary to place the rung 3 so that its laterally bent portions 7 and 9 are in contact with the inner surfaces 14 of the rails 1 and 2 and wood screws 12 inserted through the openings 10 and 11 and turned tightly into the rails. r
The rungs 3 inay also be used to great advantage. in the construct-ion of newladders, since the assembly thereof is certainly cheap and quick, it being merely necessary to apply the screws 12 through the openings 10 and 11 to secure the rungs 3 in their proper respective positions relative the rails 1 and 2.
In Fig, 3, I have shown a modified form of the rung 3 in which I weld the adjacent, edges of the laterally bent portions 7 and 9 to form one continuous surface .15 of the portions 7 and 9. This also adds greatly to the strength of the fastening means and also to the angle iron itself, since the laterally bent portion 9 becomes an integral web for 106 i the intersecting sides 4 and 5 of the angle iron 3 l I claim: A device of the character described comprising an angle iron having laterally bent 110 portions of its tWo respective sides at each other side being bent to provide a Web beend thereof, the laterally bent portions 20f tweenthesides of the angle irong-each' o'f said single plane transverse to the body portion ing' therethrough to receive a Wood screw or 5 of the angle iron, the laterally bent/portionsthe like.
