While the embodiment' o-t the device shown in the drawings is especially adapted for se.- curing a spare tire to a' supporting frame it will be apparent that it may' be employed as an ordinary doorlock or as a lock for other purposes for which it may be adapted.
ln describing its operation it will irst be assumed that the bolt is in its unlocked position as indicated in Figure la, the removable plunger M carried by the free end of the chain is then inserted as indicated gthe cap to which the bolt C is attached is then forcedk inwardly against the action of the spring K, thereby causing the forward end of the bolt to enter the peripheral groove M2.- at the end of the removable plunger. The cap is then manually rotated to shift the relative positions of the tumblers E and G so'that the grooves E4 and G2 of the respective tumblers are out of registration with the groove D in the sleeve D, thus securing the tongue C of the ybolt C against return and in locked position as indicated in Figure 2. Vhen it is desired to unlock the device the tumblers are rotated through the manual operation of the cap B so as to bring the grooves E4 and G2 of the respective t-uniblers into registration with the groove DA ot'the sleeve or tumbler D that the tongue C ot the bolt C maybe vforced out of the peripheral groove M2 bythe spring K into the `groove D', F# and G2 ot the respective tumblers, this resultV being` effected as will be understood, through the arbitrary adjustment oft the graduated cap with reference to lthe indicating arrow or graduation A on the wall of the lock-casing. `Upon the tumblers being brought into proper registration the spring K forces thek cap B outwardly ((see Figure la), carrying therewith the bolt ,-the tongue C ot the bolt entering the aligned grooves D. E4 and G2 of the respective tumblers-` thereby releasing the plunger M, that it may be removed from the casing.

In a device of the character described an enclosing casehaving a plurality of serrations, a rotatable cap slidably fitted on the exterior of one end of the case and covering said serrations and movable longitudinally of the case and provided with graduations adapted to coordinate with indicating means on the enclosing case, a manually rotatable and longitudinally movable bolt secured to the cap and having a laterally extending` tongue, means carried by the bolt adapted to engage any one of' the said serrations, a member adapted to receive the end of said vbolt, whereby a locked rela-tion may be obtained in connection therewith, a plurality ot nested rotatable coordinatingl tumblers housed in the case and adapted to secure the bolt in its locked'relation with the bolt receiving member, said tumblers being severally provided with slots adapted to be brought into registration with each other upon a predetermined arbitrary rotation of the bolt, wherebyfthe bolt may be released from its locked relation with the bolt receiving member,l and means carried by the bolt adapted to rotate one of the tumblers and thereby the cooperating tumblers to effect registrationfof the slots in said tumblers, said spring being` adapted to release the rotatable and longitudinally movable bolt from engagement with the bolt receiving member upon the slots in the several tumblers registering with the tongue'of said bolt.

In a device of the character described; an enclosing case provided with a rotatable cap fitted to the end of the case; a slidable crank arm fitted to the cap to facilitate the rotation of the latter: a` manually rotatable and longitudinallymovablebolt secured to the cap-having aA laterally extending tongue; means carried by the bolt adapted to engage a plurality of serrations formed in the enclosing' case: a member adapted to receive the end of thebolt, whereby a locked relation may be obtained with the latter; a plurality of nested rotatable co-ordinating tumblers housed in the case adapted to secure the bolt in its locked relation with the bolt receiving member, said tumblers being severally provided with slots adapted when brought into registration with each other to release said bolt receiving member and means carried by the bolt adapted to rotate one of the tumblers and thereby the co-operating i tumblers to effect registration or disarrangei vment ot the slots in the several tumblers.

' anl enclosing case, a hollow rotatable cap iitted on the' exterior of one end of the case and slidable-longitudinally thereof, a rotatable'and longitudinally movable vbolt secured to the cap and'having a laterally extending tongue, a coiled spring vhoused within the cap and disposed around therbolt for urging the same and the cap outwardly, a plurality` of nested rotatable cooperating tumblers housed in the case and provided with slots adapted to be brought into registration to receive the tongue of the bolt, means carried by the bolt and adapted to rotate the tumblers, a removable member adapted to enter the case and provided with a peripheral groove to receive the end of? the bolt, and achain linked tothe case and to the said removable member.

In a device ot the character described, a case, a rotatable, cap slidably fitted on the exterior et the'case and movable longitudinally thereotand provided' with a plurality of graduations adaptedY to coordinate with an indicating marken the case, a bolt secured to the cap adapted to be rotated and longitudinally shifted through manual operk ation ot the cap, means carried by the bolt and adapted to lengage any of a plurality of serrations formed in the wall of the case, a plurality of rotatable coordinating tumblers nested 'tegether within the case and severally provided with slots, means also carried bv the bolt and adapted to act upon the tumblers, whereby the respective tumblers may be shifted into and out of registra-tion with the tongue ot the bolt, resilient means housed within the said cap and arranged. to be compressed by the same toi" urging the cap and the bolt outwardly, and means adaptedv to receive the end of the bolt to eii'ect a locked relation between the pants upon manually shifting the bolt into engagement with said last named means.

In a device of the character described, a case provided at one end with a plurality of serrations, a hollow rotatable cap fitted on the exterior of the said end of the rcase and covering the said serrations and provided with a plurality of graduationsadapted to coordinate with an indicating mark on the case, a bolt secured to the cap and adapted to be rotated and longitudinally shifted withinr the case through the manual operation of the cap, means carried by the bolt and adapted to engage the serrations in the end of the case,y a spring housed within the cap and interposed between the said means and the Vcap for urging the said cap and the bolt outwardly. a plurality of rotatable coordinating tumblers nested togetherwitbin the'case and severally provided with slots` means also carried bv the bolt and adapted to act upon the tumblers` whereby the slots of the respective tuinblers may be shifted into and out of registration with the tongue ot the bolt. said spring being adapted to move the tongue of the bolt into the slots of the tumblers when the same are brought into registration therewith, and means to receive the end of the bolt to effect a locked relation between the parts upon manually shifting the bolt into engagement with the said last mentioned mea l0. In a device of the character described; an enclosing case; a rotatable cap tted to the case provided with a plurality of graduations adapted to coordinate with an indicating mark on the enclosing case; a bolt secured to the capy having a laterally eX- tending tongue, adapted to be manually rotated and longitudinally shifted within the enclosing case; means carried bythe bolt adapted to engage any of a plurality ofv serrations formed in the wall of the enclosing case; a plurality of rotatable'co-ordinating tumblers nested together within the case severally provided with slots; means also carried by the bolt adapted to act upon the tumblers, whereby the slots of the respective tulnblers may be forced into or out of registration with the tongue of the bolt; a removable plunger provided with a peripheral groove to receive the endvof the bolt, and a case.

the case and slidable longitudinally thereof, a spring housed within the cap and arranged `to urge the same outwardly and adapted to v25 chain connecting the plunger and enclosing the case and having slots, and means carried `r by the bolt and adapted to act upon the tum-- blers, whereby the slots of the respective tumblers may be moved into and outof registration with the tongue of the bolt.
