GARAGE DOOE- I-IOIiDE1-1 DEVICE.
Application filed June 17,
To all whom if; may 60mm)..-
Be it known that T, Orin P. Ovnuiiinn, a citizen oi the United States. and resident or Black River Falls, in the county of Jackson 5 and avtate of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garage-Door-Hlder Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and im proved device'for holding garage doors and the like in open position and is particularly adapted for use in connection with double doors that swing outwardly.
The general object of the invention is to provide a device which may be attached to the doors on the inner side thereof and which will permit the doors to swing outwardly and will automatically lock the doors when they have reached their open position. i
With the above object inview the preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure l is a sectional plan view through the doors with my invention applied thereto, the doors being shown in open position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but showing the doors in closed position.
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and showing the locking means, and I Figure 4: is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing a modification thereof.
Tn the drawing the invention is shown as applied to the doors 1 and 2 which are hinged to swing outwardly. Brackets 3 and iare provided which are adapted to be secured to the inner faces of the respective 40 doors near their hinged sides. These brackets are connected by a rod which preferably consists of two telescoping sections 5 and 6 which are adjustably secured by the set screw 7 or the like so as to be of the proper 45 length according to the width of the doors to which the device is applied. This rod is pivoted at one end to one of the brackets as shown at 8 a number of holes 8 being provided for this purpose. A collar 9 is se- 50 cured to the rod near the other end and is swiveled to the other bracket. The rod prov jects beyond the collar 9 as shown at 10 and this projecting end cooperates with a spring catch 11 t0 lock the doors when they ar 55 swung open.
the doors are swung open.
1:922. Serial No. 5629,974
The latch 11 is iulcrumed at 12 in a keeper 7...? which may be secured in any suitable manner to oneside of the bracket 3.. The
latch is provided with an inclined surface is: which rides up on the projecting end 10 Eng endiirst strikes the stop lug 21 and then engages behind the shoulder 15 to lock the doors against closing. The catch is pro vided with any suitable spring device for the present instance this device consists of a spindle 16 secured to the catch and provided with a coil spring 17 which urges the latch into position to engage the projecting end of the rod. The catch is provided on the opposite side of its fulcrum withan adj ustable end 18 which is offset towardthe door and provided with a pendant chain 20 or the like for releasing the catch when it is desiied to close the doors. may be provided to connect the bracket 4; with the door j a nb to assist in closing the doors.
In opening and closing the doors the rod 4% 6 remains of constant lellgtlL- As will be seen in igure 1 when the door 1 is swung inwardly the pivotal point of the collard will swing in the arc oi a circle about the door hinge. tially to swing outwardly through a small arcand subsequently as the door 1 ap-.
proaches its closed position the door 2 will swing inwardly to the position shown in Figure 2.
Owing to the fact that it is necessary for the door 2 to swing outwardly slightly beyond the position shown in Figure 1 it may sometimes be'found more convenient to apply. thebracket 3 to the door 2 and the bracket l to the door 1. When the device is applied in this manner it willbe found convenient to secure the latch to the opposite side of the bracket 3. In this position the projecting end 18 of the. latch may be adjusted by means of the set screw 19 so as to connected with the bracket as shown in Fig- The proj ect- A spring 22 i This will cause the door 2. iniyieidingly holding it in its lockingposition.
It will also be understood that various other modifications may be made which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 2 I I 1. In a device of the character descr1bed,a pair of brackets adapted to be secured to the inner sides or" a pair of outwardly swinging doors, a rod adjustable inl-ength and having a one extremity pivoted to one of the brackets said rod being pivoted near its other end to the other bracket but projecting beyond said last named pivot, a spring catch engageable with said projecting end to lock the'same when. the doors are opened and means se- I cured to the catch and extending toa point r 1 adjacent the door for releasing said catch.
. 2. In a device of the character described,
end, a latch fulcrumed in said keeper, a
spring; connected with the latch at one-side of its fulcrum and urging said latch to engage the projecting endwhen the doors are opened andineans secured to thelatch on the opposite sideof its fulcrum for releasing the projecting end, said means being angu larly adjustable for. the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat I 'claim'the foregoingl have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin. a
